Thrillseeker -Scotty
curleyCue17-Here you are! I hope it is to your liking ;)
You smirked as you looked down at the top of your friend's balding head. You bit back a giggle as you pulled your small travel pack around to your front, pulling out an archaic voice recorder and pressing the warm down record button.
"(L/n) Log, Star Date...um...the one after last." You shifted in the rafters to get a better look at Scotty as he moved about. "I am on the home stretch of my experiment. In the light of the nearing of my task I have decided to play a final prank on the one man who found nothing to say to me other than "get down from there you thrill seeker, you're going to get yourself hurt" or "I swear to you I will tell Bones not to heal a bone in your body if you mess up", but I have no plan on letting him think I took his warnings to heart." You bit back another giggle. "In one ear and out the other."
Carefully you placed the recorder in a pocket, still recording as you pulled out a hand-sized jar full of a yellow substance that looked of honey and smelled of straw. You had no idea what it was but you found it in Bones' office during your last check up. Now you held it right above the Scottish man, the sticky substance slowly falling out of the jar, aimed right at his round head.
Just as the first drop was about to fall, he moved. Drat. Quickly you righted the jar and shifted your weight in hopes of fixing the drop position. But your foot lost its hold on one of the rafter bars, slipping and a causing you to flail out. You dropped the jar, the glass shattering everywhere. The yellow goop looked like a minion crime scene and it smelled awful. But you didn't get time to look at it or think about all the people that you now had the attention of because you were too busy making sure you didn't land flat on your face and in that gross stuff.
You reached out and just in time grabbed a thick cable. You let out a little squeak as you clung to it like a monkey on a vine. You let out a breath and a chuckle as you relaxed against the cable, safe from falling. But not a second later you heard a snap and a creek. Looking up you let out a curse as the cord started to pull away from the rest of the ceiling rig. Suddenly you found yourself swinging down to meet the ground, but not before twirling in a circle, coming to land safely on your feet and away from the goop but face to face with the Irish engineer himself.
The look on his face made you smile bashfully, letting go of the cord and wiping your slightly burned hands on your pants. You brushed a hair out of your face and clasped your hands behind your back.
"Hey there, Scotty."
Scotty shook his head. "Thrillseeker."
"I have no idea what you are talking about." You smiled sweetly.
Scotty snorted. "And we have no idea how that yellow goop got all over my precious engine room."
You made a pitiful pouty face. "I'm so so sorry. I guess we'll just have to rip out the engine and install a new one."
Scotty crossed his arm and glanced behind you. "And I just might leave that to you. It looks like cleaning up that mess with be a-"
He froze and the look on his face startled you. A lot. Quickly, you turned to look, but you turned too fast and about fell over into the now smoking floor. Scotty reached out and grabbed you, pulling you to him as you both watched all that the yellow goop touch turn to liquid. Seething hot liquid.
Other crew membered fled the falling goop and molten metal. You stood there in shock, your jaw slack and your head hurting.
"I almost poured that on your head," you whispered almost inaudibly. You reached down and grabbed Scotty's hand, warmed when he grasped it back.
"Thank goodness you're not known for being agile."
You nodded. "Is this going to burn through the whole ship?"
Scotty shook his head. "No, so far it seems to be dying off quickly but it's done its damage."
Suddenly red lights flickered and alarms blared.
Warning: High-Pressure Containment Pods Breached. Eject Contaminated Pods Immediately. Crew Personel Evacuation Be Advised.
Scotty let out a string of obscenities. With your hand still clasped in his, the Chief Engineer rushed down a few levels to the said contaminated high-pressure pods. These were used for large scale assaults and were newly developed by yours truly. And the both of you knew how dangerous it was to have them tampered with like this. It was like having a live bomb start to tick down with a timer you couldn't see.
"Quick, help me get these out of here and into an escape shuttle. We can eject them that way and be gone before they blow us to the next star system."
A group of crewmen went to retrieve a shuttle, parking it close and leaving the little bay doors open. You could fit about seven or eight of them in there. Thankfully, only four were damaged so far.
Scotty placed a hand on your arm. "Please be careful, I'm not sure how this stuff will react to your skin."
You nodded mutely, not trusting yourself to speak. This was all your fault and here Scotty was, cleaning up your mess as per usual. There was a hiss and the alarms sounded louder.
"Scotty I'm so so sorry," you nearly mumbled under your breath. But the two of you were nearly head to head, carefully lifting a half charred pod, placing it in a nearby escape shuttle.
You could smell his cologne as well as a slight musk of oil and metal. You closed your eyes for just a second, thanking what little insanity he had that made him think being your friend was a good idea.
Scotty let out a breath as you both set the pod gently in the shuttle. "Yeah well, who said working on the Enterprise was going to be easy?!" He smiled wide at you and chucked your arm lightly with his fist. "Besides, we all need someone who is willing to put their common sense on the back burner."
You snorted, kneeling down next to the second one. "Hopefully I don't get the whole ship killed because of that."
The both of you quieted for a moment as you worked on getting two more in the shuttle. But when it came to the last one your hand slipped, touching one of the hardening drops of the goop. You hissed, almost dropping the pod.
"Oi! Steady on, lass!"
You bit your lip to save from crying out. Holding your breath the two of you lifted the last pod into the shuttle. You cradled your burnt hand to your chest as Scotty came over to you. He reached over and took your hand, ignoring the fact that the four ticking time bombs were more important than your slightly hurt hand.
"Lass, (Y/n), what were you thinking?"
You shrugged, about to reply but one of the pods started to make a whining noise. You both snapped to attention, fear bubbling up in your chest.
"Scotty, we need to send it out."
"Aye. Close the door and I'll set it to autopilot."
You moved over to the shuttle door and reached up to shut it but your stomach dropped. The yellow goop from the pods had dripped on the shuttle and the door. You couldn't shut it. You heard the ship turn on and your head snapped up. There was no way this was going to fly out there with the pods not flying out as well. You looked around the shuttle and saw your dear red-shirted friend leave the cockpit and walk your way.
Without thinking of anything other than taking responsibility for your own messes this time, you jumped in, taking care not to step in any of the goop. You reached your hands out to the doors and tugged hard, almost closing yourself in.
A hand reached out and stopped you before Scotty's bewildered face appeared.
"What in heaven's name do you think you're doing?" He hissed, his eyes searching your face for some sort of rational reasoning.
You closed your eyes and let out a breath, willing your sudden tears to not fall. "I did this. I ruined the ship. I contaminated the pods and now the door won't shut. And these will fly out if it doesn't close once it's out in space." You opened your eyes and almost lost it right then and there at the look of pain and confusion on his face. "Scotty, someone needs to hold this closed. It's all my fault anyways, I should at least do something heroic in the end." A small sob escaped your lips as you gave him a sad smile.
Scotty shook his head. "No, no, no, no. There- There can be other ways. I'm sure we could latch it closed or seal it shut. Let me call Keenser over and have him sneeze on it or something."
You shook your head and let out a sad laugh. "There isn't enough time. We have been lucky with time as it is, I don't want to risk it any longer."
Scotty took a step closer and placed another hand on the doors, effectively covering your own shaking hands. "But (Y/n), you would be all worth the risk."
A tear fell from your cheek and you let out a shaky breath. You knelt down and reached out, cupping his face gingerly. "Oh Scotty, you think too highly of me. I just about dumped this stuff on your head. You would be dead."
Scotty shook his head slightly. "No lass, I think the world of you. And so what, you didn't and that's what matters. Now get down from there before I have to drag you-"
You grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him forward, shutting him up with your lips on his. It was rushed and a bit harder than you would have liked but you did your best to pour out your years of feeling for him into that kiss. Thankfully Scotty kissed back, reaching over to wrap an arm around your waist. But you quickly pulled away and pushed him rough enough to give the shuttle space, daring not to look in his eyes as you reached back and pressed the take off ready button by the shuttle doors.
"I love you, Scotty. Sorry," you whispered before the shuttle ascended on its programmed flight path.
Scotty shouted up at you as the shuttle automatically lifted off and slowly made its way out the ship. You squeezed your eyes shut just as hard as you were holding the doors together. You didn't want to see the vast canvas of space, your coffin, come at you, so you buried your face in your arm. Tears fell despite your efforts and silent sobs racked your body.
~
Scotty raced after the shuttle, shouting up at you how stupid you were and how he had always found you and your plans to be stupid. How he hated the way you laughed at your own jokes. How you always showed up around him when it was inconvenient. And how you decided to finally tell him you loved him right before you went off and practically killed yourself.
Scotty watched in horror as the shuttle left the protective barrier and entered the cold vacuum of space. Unable to do more than sink to his knees and watch, his heart beat two slow beats before the small escape shuttle exploded. His breath hitched and his heart stopped.
"Damn you, (Y/n)," he sobbed as he watched the debris fly off and chunks of metal floated lifelessly, "I knew I loved and idiot."
Scotty wasn't sure how long time had passed before he heard a gruff voice and a hand reach under his arm to help him stand. Voices were shouting and people were running but Scotty didn't care. If it weren't for the hand under his arm he would have ejected himself out there just so he could yell at the stars that took you from him.
"Mr. Scott if you don't come with me know I will see to you spending a week in the infirmary. Without any of your scotch." Gruff Bones boomed as he shook his friend back to life.
Scotty blinked. "She's gone Bones. No amount of scotch will bring her back."
Bones rolled his eyes. "Maybe if you stopped being so melodramatic you might want to use what energy you have to come with me."
Scotty turned to Bones. "What are you going on about."
Bones nodded to the rush of people by one of the landing bay tractors. "Your girl ain't so idiotic as you say she is."
"Is?" Scotty breathed.
Bones let him go as the Scotsman pushed through the throng of people gathered around a scrap piece of metal that was brought in via tracker beam. It looked like a piece of one of the doors. But you were clinging to it, your body shaking and your knuckles white.
Without a second thought, Scotty reached down and scooped you into his arms. Your eyes opened and he smiled wide before placing his lips on yours. But something got in the way and he couldn't quite touch your skin. Shakily you snickered before pressing something on your arm and your body shimmered. You looked up at him as he tried to make sense of your still being alive.
"It was a prototype I was messing with, a suitless space suit. Forgot I had it in my bag until it felt out and-"
Now it was your turn to be shut up. He kissed you hard but slowly eased up, making your insides bubble with warmth. He held you to him as close as he could, as hard as he dared. You welcomed his embrace, kissing him in return. He pulled back and shook his head.
"You down right, thrillseeking fool. You are extremely lucky I happen to love you."
You smiled right before he showered your face with kisses, your arms wrapped around each other as you both shed tears and found solace in your unexpected but much-appreciated reunion.
