Idiot - Sulu

You rummage through your box of tools as you fiddled with a control panel on the wall. You place the tool you were using in your mouth then moved to reach for another tool but proceeded to shock yourself on a breaker outlet. You jump back and drop your tools, shaking your hand as you cringed with pain.

You didn't really have a job on the Enterprise but that meant more time to mess with a room you were given permission to mess around with for your latest idea; creating a working Holodeck. You studied Charles 'Trip' Tucker's experience with a Holodeck while helping an alien species (from the first crew of the first Enterprise) and you were hooked.

You joined the crew as a mechanical officer but you got injured in an accident that left you with a terrible limp and Captain Kirk told you to take a while off until you were fully healed. You looked down at your throbbing hand cursed under your breath. You were about to get back to your work when your communicator went off.

"(L/n) here."

"Hey honey, how goes the room?"

You smiled at your boyfriend's voice coming from the other end. "It's going slowly. I have shocked myself more times than I care to admit." You laugh nervously.

Hikaru chuckled. "Be careful, I don't want to have to try to convince the good Doctor that I'm not beating you, again."

You laugh loudly at the memory, taking a few moments to recover as the both of you laughed. "Yeah, ok fine. Though it was pretty priceless to see his face when you brought me in that first time. I thought he was going to punch you right then and there."

Hikaru's laugh turned hesitant before he became serious. "I saw my life flash before my eyes." You giggled at that. "Oh hey, I just wanted to let you know that I had to take an extra shift tonight so I won't be able to have dinner tonight. But we can do tomorrow. Promise."

You rolled your eyes but smiled. "Maybe I should shock myself a few more times before I go see McCoy."

"Ha, ha, ha, very funny. But really, I wouldn't miss dinner unless it were urgent."

You shook your head though he couldn't see it. "Don't worry about it babe. I have skipped out before, just be sure to get some sleep."

"Thanks for understanding. I'll make it up to you. Marry me maybe?"

You rolled your eyes and shook your head now out of annoyance. You have been dating for a while and the conversation of marriage has come up more than once. But as you have told him time and time again, you aren't the marrying type. Well, at least not for now. You wanted to focus on the mission and doing well on the ship, not a family, not yet.

But Sulu made it a running joke, though now it was a nerve, to ask you to marry him every now and then. You would say no and he would laugh it off but you have started to notice that his laugh lacked the usual joke to it. You shook your head again to clear your thoughts. You just don't feel ready for it yet.

"If you came to dinner when we usually planned it I would have considered it."

You laugh to yourself when you hear him cuss on the other end. "Fine. I'll talk to when I'm done with my extra shift. Love you."

"You better. Love you too."

You put away your communicator and shook your head again. You truly do love him, you are just not ready for marriage.

Or at least that's what you keep telling yourself.

A few hours after talking to you, Sulu made the appropriate arrangements before he made sure you were in your quarters. Sulu met Mr. Scott outside your halo-room, the Scotsman's arms full of various tools and computer chips.

"Mr. Sulu, I don't know what your girlfriend has been up to, but she is one smart lass. She has been able to turn all the walls into computer panels that act like mirrors almost. I don't even know how to describe it!"

Sulu chuckled as he helped him with some of his tools, locking the door behind him as they looked at the room. "She has told me everything she plans to do with it and I want to make it up to her for missing the last few dinner plans." He turns to the chief engineer and thumbs back to the room. "So, where do we start?"

You yawn as you wake from your impromptu nap, waking by the sound of your PADD going off. You sleepily rub your face as you reached for it, yawning again for extra measure. You grin when you see it was a video message from Hikaru.

"Hey you. I have a special evening planned for us tonight. I'll pick you up after my shift. Wear something you like that is comfortable but nice for an outing. Love you."

You raised and eyebrow but shrugged. He must be trying to make it up to you for missing dinner the other day. You checked the time and figured now wouldn't hurt to get ready.

As you were putting some final touches on your makeup you hear your door open and you laugh. "Make yourself at home. Not like I'm busy or anything."

"Ooo, who's the lucky guy?"

You shrug half-heartedly as you glance at him in the mirror. "Oh, some workaholic noob I met a while ago. Figured I could get a free meal when he asked." You winked.

Sulu placed his hand on his heart in feigned pain. "Oh, ouch." He laughed it off as he came up behind you to give you a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks for being ready. Now don't be alarmed but I am going to need to blindfold you. It's kinda a secret." He whispered with a knowing look.

You turned in your seat and placed your hands on his arms, using them to stand toe to toe with him. "Well, then this had better be worth it." You kissed him on the nose before allowing him to lightly wrap a piece of cloth around your head.

"Eh, it's worth a shot." You hear the laughter in his voice causing you to smile wide.

He expertly guides you through the halls and soon stops you by pulling you into his arms. You knew exactly where you were, you walked this path every day since your accident. What did he want with your holodeck room? You were about to ask when you hear the door open and feel a soft kiss on your forehead.

"You can take off the blindfold now."

You did as your boyfriend said, sliding it off gently, numbly dropping it on the ground at what you saw before you. The room was no longer a room but a sandy beach with a breeze and the most beautiful sunset you have ever seen. You slowly stepped forward, taking in the breathtaking view before you. You didn't even flinch when Hikaru came up behind you, wrapping his arms around your middle and placed a kiss on your shoulder.

"What do you think?" He whispered.

You looked at the trees bending in the soft wind, the soft sand beneath your feet, the purple and orange sunset that radiated off of the light blue waves that crashed onto the shore. You then spotted a small table for two sitting right by the water, the table cloth softly billowing as little candles flickered next to a vase of your favorite flowers.

"Hikaru...how...what-" You were at a loss of words.

He chuckled as he turned you around in his arms, holding your chin up so he could kiss you. "I'll explain over dinner." He winked then took your hand leading you to the table. You smiled at the back of his head, your heart warming to the thought of how lucky you were to have him and how blown away you were with the room.

"How in the world did you convince Scotty to help you?"

The two of you laughed as dessert started to wind down.

Hikaru shrugged and smiled. "He had been dying to know what you were up to. So to make it up to you for all those dinners I have missed, I gave him access to your stuff."

You looked at him a bit confused. "But I had no idea I was so close to doing this. I'll be honest and say I am a bit bothered I wasn't able to do it."

Sulu reached over and placed his hand over yours. "I know, it was a bit of a catch twenty-two choice but-"

His sentence was cut short when phasor shots flew by your head hitting trees behind you. You let out a yelp and ducked, grasping Sulu's hand as he crouched over to you, holding you close to him. He hit the table over to use as a shield to more shots.

"What in the world was that?!" You whisper yell at him as you turned to look over the fallen table. "Did Scotty add fireworks or something."

Sulu shook his head, looking with you. "No, I think we have some visitors. Hold up, let me see if I can turn off the program."

"What? No! I know where to go and what to do. You can still get hurt-"

Unfortunately, he didn't stay to listen. After a quick kiss on your hand, Sulu checked one more time over the table. Once the shots stopped for a moment, he rushed over to the door panel, opening the wall and messing with a few things.

You were about to run over and help him but you froze as you watched as your love of your life got shot right in the chest. Almost like in slow motion, you rushed over to him, catching him as he collapsed and pulled out a circuit at the same time. You hold him, looking over his chest as you blinked back tears.

"Honey, please, are you alright?"

His breathing became labored and he coughed. "I-I have something."

"Shhh, let me call Bones." You reach up to contact him but Sulu grabs your hand, pulling it to  his chest.

"Please, not yet."

You mutely nod, blinking back tears, trying to keep your breathing regulated. He pulled something out of his pocket and held it to you. You blinked, letting a tear fall onto the ring in his hand.

"Hikaru..."

He reaches up and places it shakily on your finger as his breathing got worse. "Marry me maybe?"

You let your tears go as you let out a sob, nodding. "Yes. Now let me get you help."

"Wait, really?" Hikaru suddenly sat up, the look of pain on his face completely replaced with a surprised smile.

You blink. What? You watched as he sat up and looked at the ring you let him place on your left hand as you tried to wrap your head around what was going on.

"I honestly didn't think you would ever say yes." He whispered to himself but you could hear him.

You yank your hand away and stand, pointing at him accusingly. "You were...faking it?" He shrugged nervously causing you to clench your hands in fists, letting out a growl. "You...you...you are the worst person ever!" You go over to him and start hitting him on his chest.

He wrapped his arms around you and shushed you sweetly to calm you down. Before he could say anything you crashed your lips to his, your tears freely flowing. You then pulled away to bury your face in his chest. "This is why I didn't want to marry you, this-this feeling of losing you. But," you pulled away to look at him, flicking his ear, "I will really marry you, you freaking idiot. You and Scotty aren't allowed in here anymore." You smirked.

"Eh, it was worth the shot." Sulu smiled sheepishly as he leaned down and kissed you thoroughly.
