Excuses- Spock
Here ya go @emcorn! This one was particularly fun to write. Thanks again for the idea!
You nervously wrung your hands as you waited for Commander Spock to be finished with his meeting with the captain. You played back every interaction you had with him and for the life of you, you couldn't figure out if you had said or done anything to warrant an audience with your superior officer.
The two of you have known each other and worked together for years now but that didn't mean you would allow yourself to become all buddy-buddy with him. Besides, from experience in past experiences you know he doesn't take intimate interactions very well. There was just that one time the two of you had to cuddle in a sleeping bag but that was for warmth due to a storm on an away mission and there weren't enough warm supplies. Not that you would regret doing that, you just knew that was the moment he told you to keep your interactions as professional as possible.
But for the last few weeks, you have found that request something very hard to stick to. the both of you would slip up from time to time and it would feel like the both of you worked so well together. But then those moments would be gone in a flash when he would suddenly realize what was happening. Now you don't know exactly what to do. You would count him as a friend but you didn't know how to express anything more than that when he clearly doesn't want it.
The door slid open and your head shot up in time to see a group of men leave the office, but you couldn't find the science officer in question.
You were about to ask the captain where he was when you heard your name be called from within the room. You tuned to see Spock with his back turned to you, his body rigid and his hands clasped behind his back as he stared out into the vast expanse of space.
"(Y/n). If I may have a moment of your time." His even tone reached your ears and you couldn't help but smile.
It wasn't until the doors closed behind you that you visibly saw the Vulcan relax in his stance. His shoulders slump slightly and he turns slowly, as if suddenly tired. You stand at attention but send him a look of concern, searching his face for some hint sat to why you were here and why he was acting this way. He motions for you to take a seat at the conference table in the middle of the room without taking a seat himself.
"May I ask as to why you have called me here?" You sent him a look, knowing he found it slightly amusing when you would copy his proper vernacular.
Spock just glanced at you instead, but you saw a flash of something in his eyes before he turned around to look at the stars. Something like sorrow. And regret. "I see you wish to bypass formalities." You hear him take a deep breath. He looks over his shoulder, but only just. "You have been reassigned to the Bradbury, effective immediately."
Cold. Teeth chattering, shoulder shaking, cold enveloped you. You slowly stood, coming to stand next to Spock. You just stare out the window, ignoring the Vulcan as he turns to you, closing the space between you somewhat. A memory from a few weeks ago flashed through your mind's eye.
It was a late night and Spock had asked you to help him finish a few reports. These reports had to be finished by the next shift so the two of you got comfortable. You were splayed over your chair, humming a mindless tune. Spock was sitting next to you, sharing a bag of dried fruit. At one point you both reached in the bag, hands touching.
You glanced at him and noticed his light green blush before he retracted his hand and turned away. You let out a nervous laugh as you popped a raisin in your mouth. The both of you stayed quiet, soon moving to the small couch in the office. You kept your respective distances but as the hours dragged on the two of you became a bit more relaxed.
Maybe a little too relaxed; you both fell asleep on each other. That memory was one you would love to relive. But it seems like it may not happen again.
Since then, any time he got close your heart raced and a blush would threaten to creep up on you. Like now. You took a deep breath and closed your eyes. "May I ask why?" Your voice was weak and lacked confidence. Tears threatened to fall as you took deep breaths.
"You are no longer needed here."
You turned on him, your eyes wide. "'No longer needed?' That's it? Am I really that useless?"
Spock looked down at you, the look in his eyes finally making sense. He held your gaze steady. "No. Quite on the contrary." Spock looked away as tears started to fall down your cheeks freely. "It is in the best interest of the crew and, in extension, you."
You scoffed, throwing your hands up. "Oh that's just great, isn't it?" You run your hands through your hair as you turn in a full exasperated circle. "And what, I don't get a say in this?" You turn on him.
Spock merely cocked his head to the side, placing his hands behind his back again. "Please, (Y/n), your elevated emotions will not elicit a different outcome of your reassignment."
"Oh no, no, no." You stomped up to him, pointing your finger in his face as anger filled you. "You don't get to "(Y/n)" me. You...you could have vouched for me to stay." Your voice wavered as you wiped away tears.
"Enlighten me as to what reason I should have shown such favoritism for you?" His voice stayed frustratingly steady.
You dropped your hand and looked down at your feet. "I...I thought we worked well together." You glance up at him as you cleared your face again. "I thought I was a help to you; that I was worth something to you."
At that, Spock let his guard down for a moment, giving you hope that you won't be sent away. But the emotion he showed was gone just as fast as it appeared.
"I expressed your importance to the Enterprise in several reports."
"But?"
"Your credentials are extraordinary and it would be a shame to keep you when you could aid in the advancements of scientific studies on other Starfleet ships."
You shook your head, looking at him incredulously. "And that's what you told the recruiting reports? All of that?"
Spock gave you a single nod. "Correct. You are of no greater importance to me here than on another vessel."
You stared at him. "But you just said that I was important to you."
"Correct."
"So why tell them that you don't need me anymore?"
"Perhaps that is because it is true. I can perform admirably without you."
You slumped into the seat you had taken earlier. "So you lied."
Spock grew ridged. "You are mistaken. Vulcans do not lie." He stepped closer to you, his eyes holding yours captivated.
You stood to face him, your stance matching his. "Then do you care to explain how I could be important to you but not important enough to keep on the ship? So am I just a commodity that you can trade between ships now? Can you not see I want to stay here!?"
Spock took a step closer. "You misunderstand me. It is because you are invaluable to me that I wish for you to be stationed on another ship for fear that the Enterprise will fall under enemy fire and you would be injured or killed. I can not in good concous let you stay in such a state of high risk."
Time almost stopped. You replayed his words in your mind as you blinked up at him. "You care for me," you whispered under your breath.
Spock heard of course and straightened. "Another point, might I add, as to why you will be reassigned. It is unseemly for our intimate moments to continue. It would be in the best-"
"-Interest for the both of us." You droned back the rest of his sentence. But you couldn't stop the smile that was starting to grow. "And yet you choose to speak to me about this alone and in a secluded room no less." Now it was your turn to take steps closer, causing the slightly flustered Vulcan before you to step back. "The fact you even had to state such a thing means you and I both know those 'intimate moments' were not at all one-sided."
Spock now looked a bit more green, the tips of his ears almost giving off a glow. "I am afraid you will be disappointed to know that-"
But you didn't let him finish. You knew the both of you sucked at telling each other how one felt so you took a leap of faith, praying he won't kick you out of Starfleet. You reached up, grabbed the front of his uniform and brought him down to you, your eyes never leaving his. When he didn't push you away you took the chance, closing the distance, kissing him as if you were scared he would vanish right before you.
You let go of him and pulled away, stepping back so the both of you could breathe. You didn't look up but you heard him step forward, feeling his hand reach up to your chin to lift your face to look at him. Regret and sorrow no longer filled his deep brown eyes, but happiness and a bit of mischief did.
"I suppose there may be a reason for me to vouch for you to stay," he whispered.
With that, he leaned down and kissed you a bit more tenderly, making your heart soar and your toes curl. He breaks the kiss to peck your cheek then wrapped his arms around you securely.
"Forgive me. I truly do not want you to leave. I tell you the truth that you are invaluable to me and I fear for your life on this ship. But now, I do not believe I can bring myself to let you go."
You smiled wide as you closed your eyes, letting happier tears fall onto his blue shirt. "I am sorry for getting upset. I am touched by your intentions but," you pulled away, keeping your hands on his arms, "I wish to stay here. With you."
In response, Spock smiled but only slightly, but it was beautiful. "It appears I have a report to revise."
You crinkled your nose with a feigned grimace. "But that can wait for later, right?"
All Spock did was nod before taking you in his arms again, promising to never let you go.
