Cherish- McCoy

just_another_trekkie-Oh my gosh I teared up a bit...Thank you for the request!

The Enterprise shook as it took another hit but this time part of the hull flaked off. You keep a hand on your stomach as you worked with your other hand to keep the ship evenly protected. You turned to the Captian, wincing.

"Sheilds are at 14%, sir. Another hit and we're in big trouble."

Kirk nodded. "Move all shields aft. Focus all fire to the front. Any luck with those torpedoes yet Scotty?"

"No sir, they are still offline. But I have one more trick up my sleeve."

Kirk winced then turned to Sulu. "Get us out of here. Find the nearest asteroid field. I have a plan."

Bones stepped out of the turbo and was grabbed by Kirk as the Captian headed into the lift. "What is going on Jim?"

"I have a plan and I need you."

Bones sneered. "Of course you do. And right when I was about to tell my wife to get to safety too."

Jim opened his mouth but the ship suddenly shook. It was a bad one. The turbo lift hadn't gone anywhere, so the two men burst onto the Bridge, looking around to assess the damage. A few consoles were sparking and a couple people were thrown to the ground. You being one of them. Bones ran to you, helping you up as you winced.

"(Y/N)! Are you alright?"

You held on to Leonard as he helped you stand. "I think so."

He kissed your forehead and placed a hand on your stomach. "And the baby? Anything feel wrong?"

You placed your hand over his. "No, I think she's fine." You gave him a small smile as you leaned into his arms. "Though I don't think this fight is going in our favor."

Kirk piped up. "Don't give up on us yet Mrs. McCoy. Now Scotty!"

Torpedoes rained down on the Klingon ships as Sulu got the ship ready for warp. You held onto your husband as the whole ship took a collective breath and sigh of relief as the Klingons were incapacitated and the Enterprise was out of danger.

Everyone let out a yell of celebration. Kirk grinned, patting Sulu's shoulder. "good job pilot. You read my mind."

Sulu grinned. "Just doing my duty sir."

Scotty's voice interrupted. "I assume it worked, sir."

Kirk nodded. "You assumed correctly. Thank your for your quick action." He turned to everyone else. "Good job guys. Now let's get to a repair post safely."

Everyone chuckled nervously. You smiled slightly but suddenly that smile turned into a grimace of pain. You clutched your middle and let out a gasp.

"Leo..." You sagged into your husband, clutching your stomach with one hand as you grasped into his shirt with your other. "Some-something is wrong. Guuuhhh." You groaned.

Leonard held you as you both slowly came to the ground. You were breathing hard and sweat started to fall. He didn't know what to do, he held you close and made sure you were still breathing. But you were losing consciousness and a fever was forming. Kirk called for help as he saw his friends struggling to make sense of the situation.

You felt your husband's hand stroke your cheek. "(Y/n)? (Y/N)!? Stay with me. Come on." He looked down at your stomach and his heart dropped.

Blood started to pool between your legs on the Bridge floor. Quickly he picked your limp figure up and rushed to the Med-Bay, his heart hammering in his chest.

You groaned. "Honey...the baby..." you were fading. Fast.

Internally screaming Leonard kissed your forehead. "I know sweetheart. I got you."

For the first time in a long time Bones prayed. He prayed to anyone listening for his wife and unborn child to make it safely through surgery. They were his world and would be nothing without them.

The sound of soft voices pulled you back to reality. Soon light took over the darkness you felt you would never be able to leave. You felt a hand in yours as another hand stroked your brow. Slowly you opened your eyes and smiled. Bones sat next to you, his eyes searching your face as you awoke, worry lines creasing his brow.

You gave him a soft smile and reached up, smoothing the worry lines. "Do you want to look fifty years old?" You croaked.

Leonard smiled a little but it soon vanished. He took both your hands in his and took a deep breath. He was acting weird and you didn't like it. Something was wrong. You mentally did a check list. You felt fine. In fact, you have never felt better.

You gave him a questioning look. "Is everything alright?"

Still, he didn't say anything. He looked up at you and his eyes were red. Your heart stopped.

No.

Oh please, heavens, no.

Tears brimmed your eyes as you shook your head. Leonard reached out and stroked your cheek. "I tried, sweetheart. I really did. But she was already...the fall...I'm so sorry (Y/n)." He looked down again and you saw tears drip to the floor. "I should have tried harder. I'm sorry," he whispered.

Tears of your own started to fall but you sat up and reached out, pulling him to you. You stroked his hair as the both of you started to sob. "Oh honey, it's not your fault. There wasn't anything you could do," you whispered to him.

Colors were dull. Sound became muted. You were numb. Tears fell on still faces and no more sobs were left. The both of you laid there, in each other's arms for who knew how long, comforting one another as you both began to come to terms with no longer being expecting parents of a little girl.

8 Months Later

You rushed around the Med-Bay helping as many colonists as you could. You blocked out the screaming and crying of the scared children as you tried to focus on the people who were in need of immediate care. You saw your husband doing the same, a look of concentration and focus making him look worried and angry.

Ever since that fateful day, Leonard had been working himself to the bone. He was sleep deprived and guilt driven, despite all the times you told him that you didn't blame him for what happened. It just happened. if anyone was to blame it was those Klingons.

But Bones never neglected you. He loved you and cared for you. He just wouldn't let you in. So you thought giving him time would help, yet here was, stomping around. You shook your head and moved on to another patient. The two of you never really drifted apart but things weren't the same. Even after changing positions in the ship to be closer to him, you still felt like things were slipping.

Unfortunately, something happened that neither of you were expecting in the slightest. Kirk's voice came over the comms unit, drawing your attention.

"Bones not everyone made it off the carrier ship. There are two women who say they can't leave yet. I need you to go and see what the problem is. If they don't get off that ship in fifteen minutes, it's going to blow."

Your blood ran cold at the thought of them being left on there, alone. You looked over at your husband and was surprised to see him looking at you already. He had that look in his eyes that made you fall in love with him only a few years previous; determination and trust. Both of you nodded to one another and you ran off to grab supplies you assumed you would need.

McCoy called back to the Captain. "You got it. And if they insist on staying?"

"I need my CMO, Bones."

With that, the two of you were on the transporter pad. Bones reached out and took your hand and squeezed it before letting go. Your body warmed at his little gesture but you still feared for your life. For your relationship. You shook your head. Now was not the time to be selfish.

Within a matter of seconds, you found yourself on a self-destructing colony ship, listening for the women. You heard nothing but the breaking ship. Bones tapped your arm and nodded down a corridor.

"Down that way. The transporter said they were in one of the holding rooms."

You lead the way and soon heard crying. The two of you walked into a holding room expecting to find two women. Instead, you found a pregnant woman and a dead body. The pregnant woman was sobbing as she stared down at her friend who had protected her from falling debris. With a heavy heart, you made your way to the sobbing lady.

"I'm sorry for your friend but we need to get you out of here. It's going to blow up."

The woman shook her head. "I can't! The baby, it's coming!"

Your heart skipped a beat. "What's your name?"

The woman gasped and strained. "Mella."

Sure enough, she had a contraction. IT was a big one. You turned to your husband. "Mella. She's in labor. And I think it's too late to have her beamed back. We need to do this now or not at all."

Nodding he handed you the supplies and moved to grab the woman and move her to a more open area. "I trust your judgment. Get the blanket and towels ready."

You did as he said and watched as he carefully lifted her and placed her on the towel. All three of you hid under a strong archway free of debris. She had a nasty cut on her arm and side. You did you best to wrap those up as Bones got her ready for delivery but you were worried she lost too much blood already.

Kirk's voice popped in. "Tell me they are ready to come onboard."

Bones scoffed. "I'm a little busy delivering a baby. Either shut up or find a way to keep this part of the ship from blowing up." He turned off the comms and got back to work.

Mella pushed with another contraction and you held her. You helped her breath as Bones told her when to wait and when to push. At one point you watched her body almost physically give up. But she wanted this baby to be born and the baby wasn't about to stay in. So she kept going. You gave her encouraging words as you watched your husband do his magic. And he did it.

Out came a beautiful little girl. Leonard never felt so proud and happy than he did right then. He took care of cutting the cord and cleaning her, marveling at her small features. No matter how many babies he delivers he always found it a joy and a miracle. You smiled at him then looked to Mella as the ship continued to shake.

"Mella. You have a girl. Your baby girl is here."

But she stopped responding. You shook her and her eyes opened just enough for you to see she was almost gone. She reached up and took your arm with what strength she had left.

"Watch over her. Take my baby and keep her safe. Please."

Your eyes widened. All you could do was nod. But that wasn't enough for her.

"Promise me she will have a family. Promise me she will grow up happy."

With tears in your eyes, you nodded, smiling sadly. "She will grow up knowing she had the strongest mother. I promise she will be happy and safe." You stroked her brow as she smiled and laid to rest one last time.

Bones grabbed your arm as he held the baby girl in his other arm securely wrapped. "Take her."

You shook your head. "You get to hold her. We are going back together."

The ship blew up and you opened your eyes, standing in front of a small crowd in the transporter room. Kirk, Spock, and even Scotty stood there staring up at the three of you. Kirk took a step forward.

"Do you mind telling me what was so important to risk the lives of my CMO and his wife?"

You smiled at him as you stood next to Leonard and pulled back the cloth on the sweet baby's face. "We couldn't leave our daughter."

Leonard's eyes widened and he looked at you. "Daughter?"

You shyly nodded. He smiled wide and kissed you. Turning to his captain and friend, he stepped down and held her for him to see. "Please welcome the newest member of the Enterprise crew."
