Check up-McCoy

This was requested by the kind CaseyBrasher5! I hope this is to your liking!

You hummed to a song in your head as you tinkered with a small piece of circuit board under a heat ventilator in engineering. You could hear Scotty shouting orders to various people, Keenser mostly. You snickered as you heard him swear after he dropped something heavy sounding on his foot.

"(Y/N)!"

You rolled your eyes at his exclamation of your name. You scooted out from under the vent and wiped your brow, navigating your way through the numerous walkways to the source of his yelling. You hold back a laugh as you see Scotty pinned to the ground by a poorly placed air conditioner on his lap. He looked up at you, wincing slightly, but he let out a chuckle.

"Now don't say a word to Chekov. I know he told me to not move it myself but it has been bothering me just leaving it here where anyone could trip over it."

You squatted and, with his help, lifted the conditioner off his lap and onto the ground next to him. "And by anyone you mean yourself."

"You'd be surprised how many people don't pay attention to where they are going."

"Hmmm," you hummed as you brushed your hands off on your dress, "I'd like to see the security footage on that. Are you and your posterity alright? Do you need me to carry you to sickbay?"

Scotty scoffed, waving his hand in the air as he looked at a screen on the wall. "Aye, I'm fine. And no, I don't need you to take me to sickbay but the Doctor has requested you to come fix a humidifier."

You groaned, rolling your eyes, though you really didn't mind. "Looks like you aren't the only clumsy one today." You salute to him, hurrying off with your supply bag. "I'll stay late to finish my shift."

Again, he didn't look at you as he waved you off.

You glided through the med-bay doors, the smell of antiseptic and sterilizer greeting you. As well as a seemingly bashful doctor and a smoking humidifier.

You clicked your tongue as you set your tools on the table next to the device, the doctor standing next to you with his arms folded. "My goodness, Doctor. If I didn't know any better, I would think you were breaking things just to get me up here." You send him a coy smile.

McCoy grunted, doing a poor job of keeping down his blush. "Hey, it's not my fault the medical department is the last to get it upgrades. It's like Starfleet thinks I can heal people with the touch of my hand."

You smirk as you looked over the device. "Well, some women just might think so."

McCoy grunted again. "And this is only the second time today," he practically whispered as you felt him lean in a bit closer as if he was ashamed if anyone overheard.

You let out a small laugh, turning to him with a hand on your hip. "The second time today, the fourth time this week and the twelveth time the past two weeks." You leaned in a bit closer to him, your noses nearly touching. "I'd say someone has a crush on the mechanic." You held his gaze then winked.

That brought a full, cherry red blush from the stoic doctor, earning him a hearty laugh from you. McCoy let out another grunt, bumping you with his arm as he stomped past you. "Don't hold your breath."

You let him leave, your arm tingling where he bumped you as you tried to steady your breathing. You didn't think getting that close to him would affect you so much, but you found yourself practically gasping for air. Good thing you were working on that humidifier.

The activity in sickbay was relatively low, making your work go much faster than you had anticipated, leaving you with a bit of free time on your hands before Scotty would expect you back. You packed up your things and headed over to McCoy's office, smiling at his grumpy face as he looked at medical PADDs.

"You know, if you hate the work so much why in the world did you become a Starfleet doctor?" You set your things down on the ground then swung your leg over the top of a chair across from him, sitting down with a small bounce.

He didn't look up from his work as he answered. "Believe it or not I find it rewarding helping those stupid enough to get themselves hurt."

"Like Jim?" Your smile grew.

He spared you a glance, a glint of humor in his eyes. "Like you."

You scoffed, scrunching your face as you waved him off. "Nah. I only get hurt for logical reasons. You know that."

"I'm glad you find your knack for getting hurt a logical reason to see me."

It was your turn to blush. He looked up at you, a smirk pulling at his lips and at your heart. "Two can play at this game, sweetheart."

You rolled your eyes and leaned forward, placing your hands on his desk, giving him the most sultry look you could muster. "Don't. Hold. Your. Breath." You winked then left, oblivious to the state you just left the doctor in.

Leonard watched you go, his heart hammering in his chest. It took everything in him not to lean the rest of the way across his desk and press his lips to yours, his hands itching to take you into his arms.

You were only half right when you said he as breaking things because he liked you. He liked you, no doubt, that's why he made sure you were the one to come fix the equipment that would break or act out conveniently.

He won't lie, he had utterly enjoyed the time the two of you would spend together, joking, talking and griping about how annoyingly irrational your captain was. But then there would be times where neither of you would talk, just sitting and working in science but in each other's company was enough.

Now Leonard almost wished for something to break every day so he could see you at least once. The sound of someone coming in to be seen brought him back to the present. Shaking his head and clearing his throat, McCoy stood and saw to his patient, doing a poor job of getting our smiling face out of his mind.

You stood in a small circle around Scotty, your arms folded as you paid attention to his rushed explanation of the away trip you were assigned to go on. A ship was in need of a few repairs on an earthen-like asteroid and you were one of the few who knew non-Starfleet ships. An unknown species contacted the Enterprise as she passed them, calling for aid.

"I'll be coming with you. Each of you will be given an adapted comms unit, one that will not only tell the ship and the rest of us where you are but it acts like its own transporter beam. Chekov will beam you back whenever you press the red button."

He handed each of you one, you taking it and sliding it on your utility belt. "Now, make sure you are all equipped. This rescue repair mission shouldn't take long at all. The creatures will meet us down there and show you what needs to be fixed. It's all external, do not enter their ship."

You nodded, stepping away and grabbing your tool bag. You didn't like the feeling you were getting, the closer it came to being sent down. You were about to enter the transporter room when you ran into a warm body. You let out an "oof" as you teetered back but you didn't fall, feeling an arm wrap around your waist.

McCoy held you but let go the moment you were steady. You instantly missed the warmth his closeness gave you, the comfort you felt especially before a somewhat daring repair mission.

You looked up at McCoy, giving him a small smile. "Don't tell me something else broke. As you can see I'm a bit preoccupied."

Leonard let a tiny smile surface before he grew serious, pulling out a hypo. "Relax, you're not the only engineer on the ship who knows how to fix medical equipment. Besides, I have to give you this to fight possible airborne diseases." Anything to delay you from leaving for an unknown place.

Your heart sank at the thought of him having someone else fix his faulty machinery. You just nodded, presenting him your neck to him, feeling his closeness making your heart race. You winced at the small prick but neither of you stepped away from the other, your eyes locked with his. Unsaid feelings and emotions swam almost tangibly between you.

But the moment was broken by your name being called by Scotty, bringing you back to the task at hand. Leonard cleared his throat, stepping back but he gave you a smirk. "Don't go falling in love with anyone down there. They might be breaking things on purpose."

You gave him a side glance, your eyes smiling up at him as you let out a fake gasp. "Jealousy doesn't suit you, dear. Though that smile does." You gave him your signature wink before you left him smiling after you. He was never the praying type but he could help but pray you would be safe.

You, Scotty and the group hesitantly made your way to the aliens who needed help. They were acting too nice, too kind, too...predictable. You didn't like it one bit. But by the look of their ship, they may honestly need help. After an agonizingly long introduction that felt like a high school dating game, you got to work fixing the landing gears that looked like they tried to put down but it got caught.

You were working for who knows how long when you started to feel like something was off. More than usual. You looked around to find your crewmates but no one was in sight. You called for Mr. Scott by there was no answer. Odd.

You left your work and searched for your friends, fear and worry pricking at the back of your neck. A sound to your side drew your attention but it was too late. A shot of a laser hit your arm, making you cry out in pain and stagger but you kept your footing. You reached over to grab your comms unit and beam back but another shot sounded and it was blasted out of your hand, making you hiss as your hand burned.

Well great, now what?

Up on the ship, Scotty and the others anxiously awaited your arrival. Leonard stood with them, seeing to a few small wounds. The moment Scotty beamed back and said it was a trap, Leonard's heart leaped and he could only think of you and if you were alright. Chekov did his best to beam the crew back without being detected, so that meant slow and a few at a time. But by the time he could get to you your indicator was gone.

"Where is she?" Leonard stepped next to Scotty, giving him a look that made the Scotsman gulp. "You gave her one of those right? Now where is she, is she hurt?" He knew he should have come with you to protect you.

"Aye, I gave her one. But she was on the other side of the ship, and we couldn't tell her what was going on. She's a smart lass. She will be fine."

But his tone reassured no one. The doctor rubbed his face and ran a hand through is hair. He turned to Chekov seeing if he made progress with finding her manually.

Meanwhile, you leaned against a rock, shielding yourself from their shots. You closed your eyes and groaned against the pain in your arm and hand. Your mind searched wildly for a way to get back to the ship but nothing came to mind. You were contemplating the idea of surrendering when the familiar feeling of being dematerialized swarmed your body.

Leonard rushed over to you as he watched you materialize and slump to the ground, groaning in pain. He picked you up gingerly in his arms, holding you close as he took you to sickbay. You looked up at him, reaching up with your good hand to cup his cheek.

"Ah. You're real," you said weakly, "good."

Leonard laid you on a bio-bed, making sure you were comfortable. He looked at you, wiping away some loose hair from your face. He couldn't help himself; he leaned down and placed a soft kiss on your forehead.

You smiled just a bit but winced. "Careful, I might think you were breaking things on purpose."

Leonard smirked as he got to work patching you up. "To see you more; it's a shame I didn't think of doing that in the first place."

You let out a light laugh as you closed your eyes, feeling the effects of the sleep agent take ahold of you. You were almost asleep but not before you felt the sweet doctor take your hand in his, helping you feel safe as you fell into a deep blissful sleep.
