Chapter 2
We soon arrived at Starbase 11, and I made my way through the base. Kirk had been put on trial for the murder of records officer Benjamin Finney, forcing us to stay on base.
"Everything alright Bones?" I asked as I set beside him.
"No.... I'm worried about Jim." He said softly.
"I know what you mean.... I know Finney's death hurt him and with this trial going on.... it is hurting him." I said softly.
He nodded his head and I let out a sigh as I ordered a drink.
"So when is the trial?" I asked as I took a sip.
"Hopefully soon. I know me and Spock are going to be witnesses."
"Same. They want someone from engineering." I said as I shook my head.
"I see..... well hopefully we can save him."
Soon it was time for the trial and I set beside Spock and waited to be called. Spock was called and they started to question him.
Human beings have characteristics, just as inanimate objects do. It is impossible for Captain Kirk to act out of panic or malice. It is not his nature." Spock said calmly.
I bit my lip as I watched her continue to talk and then I was called.
"Lt. Willow Wakeman, apprentice Engineer, medical nurse. Award of honor. Age 25. " The computer read.
"You where in the engine room when this happen right?" Shaw asked calmly.
"Yes, I was working beside Scotty the chief engineer."
"What can you say about Kirk ejecting the pod? Should he have ejected it?" She asked softly.
"Yes, He should of. The ship was in danger and he had to eject it."
"You worked beside Kirk for sometime, do you think that Kirk could intentionally kill Finney?"
"No. He couldn't. It isn't like Kirk."
"Cogley your witness."
"I have a question. On your record it reports that no one wanted you in their ship, why did Kirk want you on his ship?" He asked calmly.
"I don't know. He never told me. He asked for me to be put on his ship."
"Why didn't anyone want you on their ship?"
"Because of my father, Carter Wakeman. He was the captain of USS Thunderchild. He was killed while fighting against a Klingon Fleet. Some say he didn't die an honorary death, but there is a few that don't." I said calmly.
"So Kirk knew this about your father and still invited you to his ship and yet they think him a cold blooded murder... what do you think?"
"I think that he is a great captain and friend. He would do anything for his ship and his crew." I said softly.
I was soon took off the stand and I listened as they had Bones and then Kirk on the stand. Soon we where dismissed and I held my breath as I waited on word about the trial. I set on my bed and flipped through pages on my computer.
" Lieutenant Wakeman, can you come with me?" Spock asked as he walked into my room.
"Maybe if you would call me Willow and learned to knock." I said as I crossed my legs.
"Lieutenant please." He said calmly.
"Fine." I said as I stood up and followed behind him.
We made it to the chess room and I watched as he played.
"I shouldn't be able to win." He said calmly.
"How many times have you won?"
"This is the forth time. I programmed the computer to match my moves, the best I should have is a tie."
"Then it could be wrong." I said softly.
He nodded his head and we took off to tell the council. Soon they had us to go the ship again and we all made it to the briefing room.
"How many games of chess did you win from the computer, Mister Spock?" Cogley asked calmly.
"Five in all." He said softly.
"May that be considered unusual?"
"Affirmative."
"Why?"
"I personally programmed the computer for chess months ago. I gave the machine an understanding of the game equal to my own. The computer cannot make an error and assuming that I do not either, the best that could normally be hoped for would be stalemate after stalemate, and yet I beat the machine five times. Someone, either accidentally or deliberately, adjusted the programming and therefore the memory banks of that computer."
"Could that have had an effect on the visual playback we saw?" Cogley asked calmly.
"Object! The witness would be making a conclusion." Shaw snapped.
"Sustained." Stone said softly.
I listened closely as they continued to talk, and Bones sent me a small smile.
"What man aboard ship would it not be beyond?" Cogley asked.
"The Captain, myself, Lt. Wakeman and the records officer." Spock said calmly.
They continued to talk for a few minutes and then Cogley said something that shocked me.
"Gentlemen, I submit to you that Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney is not dead." Cogley said sternly.
We made it to the bridge and they explained how we would find out if Finney was alive. McCoy put his machine to my chest and clicked it. We listened to the heart machine and then Kirk went to find Finney.
"Mister Spock, what's our orbit status?" Kirk asked on the com.
"Decaying, Captain." Spock said as he looked at me.
"Variants at second level, depreciating unusually fast." Hanson said calmly.
We waited a few minutes and then Hanson looked at Spock.
"Mister Spock, we're running out of time." He said calmly.
"Gentlemen, if you'll please hurry to the transporter room." Spock said softly.
"Mister Spock, the court has not yet reached a verdict. We will hear this witness out." Stone said softly.
"Very well, sir." Spock said as he set down.
Soon Kirk stopped Finney and we fixed the mistake. After everything was over I fixed the ship with Scotty before going to the bridge and telling Kirk the results.
"So everything is up and ready to go." I said calmly.
"She's a very good lawyer." Kirk said with a smile.
"Obviously." Spock said calmly.
"Indeed she is." McCoy said with a smile.
I rolled my eyes and walked off the bridge.
