Bones

It was a running joke among the crew of the enterprise that Dr. Leonard McCoy was a modern incarnation of the famous grumpy cat. Just as snarky, same sour look, and general bad attitude.

Most also found him hard to deal with. There were exceptions to the rule, of course; Kirk often found that underneath McCoy's salty outer shell he really was a caring guy.

And you, of course. You had developed a crush on the grumpy doctor, though you were too scared to tell him so. His sharp attitude made it hard for you to talk to him on a professional level, much less try and talk to him about things as soft and squishy like crushes.

But right now your crush on the doctor could wait. The enterprise was dealing with a much bigger problem.

The ship was in the midst of battle with a Klingon armada, and injured crew were coming into medbay by the dozens.

As a nurse, this is what you were trained to do; but it was still stressful trying to handle so many injured people at once.

It didn't help that the ship couldn't stay stable, and the floor kept shifting under your feet.

You were just going to check in another patient when the floor suddenly tilted sharply down and you were sent sliding towards the wall. You tried your best to brace yourself, and amazingly, you landed against the wall without hurting yourself.

However, the wheeled tray of surgical instruments changed that. The heavy cart pinned your arm to the wall, and you cried out in pain. From the angle of your arm, you suspected it was broken.

It didn't help that the scalpels on the top part slid off and raked your arm as they clattered to the floor, leaving slashes of red on your arms.

You hissed in pain, but picked yourself back up and went in search of bandages. You had to wrap the cuts, so they wouldn't be a risk for the patients you were attending, but the fracture could wait, there were more serious injuries you had to attend to.

Hours later, after the flood of patients had subsided, Bones caught a glance of your wrapped arm in passing, and immediately looked suspicious.

"C'mere" he said gruffly, showing you to a biobed. You sighed and sat on the edge, of all the doctors in medbay, it had to be Bones treating you.

"It's nothing, I'm sure it'll be fine" you muttered and he began to unwrap the gauze. He paused long enough to give you a pointed look, and then continued unwrapping.

When the gauze was fully off, he looked surprised and swore under his breath.
"Dammit, (y/n), why didn't you get this taken care of sooner?" He demanded.
You shrugged, "there were other patients, they needed to be taken care of first"
"Not when your arm is fractured! Jesus, (y/n) I'm surprised you stayed on your feet this long!"
You shrugged again, "it's not so bad" you lied.
"Not so bad?!? You've got several hairline fractures in your ulna, and you've got half a dozen lacerations down your forearm. I'm amazed you're not in more pain, and I have no idea how you managed to treat patients like this"
You shrugged a third time "all in a day's work, I suppose"
"Better not be" Bones growled. You gave him a quizzical look, and he ran his hand through his dark brown hair in frustration,
"Dammit, (y/n), I just don't want to see you get hurt. Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence, and I don't wanna see such a bright woman like you have somethin' horrible happen to ya because you've got a heart the size of a moon and you'll put everyone else first" his voice became softer,
"I... I just don't want anything but the best to happen to ya because... because I think you're beautiful........... oh hell, that didn't come out right!"
You sat forward on the bio-bed and cut off his feverent rant, covering his lips with your own. He promptly went silent, and you felt a gentle hand at your waist.

If you always had Bones on your side, you doubted if there was anything that could hurt you.
