Backstory: Being a Holmes isn't easy, and being the youngest and most disliked is even worse.
Andromeda was a surprise, an accident as Mycroft always put it, born 9 years after Sherlock when their parents were mourning their lost daughter. They saw their new baby as a second chance, to do right where they failed with Eurus. Mycroft was old enough to be away enough not to be around her when she was born, and Sherlock just saw her as an annoyance.
She was different from the other Holmes siblings. Not just with her golden locks and warm blue eyes that made her stand out amongst her dark haired family - a feature that often lead Mycroft to reason perhaps their mother had an affair. But her mindset. Her brothers thought her to be stupid and lesser because she was emotional. She couldn't understand their need to block out anything that made them human. Genius over empathy.
That knowledge always made her feel excluded. They didn't care much for her and she knew it. They didn't accept her. They belittled her and called her inferior.
So at 13 she decided to find somewhere where she would belong better.
That was the day, perhaps, by fate she met a strange man sporting a bow tie in the park. Empathy encouraged her to question why he seemed unhappy and curiosity had the runaway teen follow him when he charged off into what she could sense was an adventure.
It turned out to be just that, involving some lost aliens that turned out to be hostile when confronted with the idea of leaving Earth. Such event leaving Andromeda lifeless, a mass impact tearing a deep bloody gash into her temple.
So detrimental, when she came around her mind was scrambled. Her memories knocked out of her along with all knowledge of who she was or where her home was.
The Doctor vowed to help her, feeling responsible, find where she belonged. Days turned to weeks, then to eventually years. The lost Holmes became a companion, all the while without answers. She had to build a new identity with nothing but a name.
These days people call her "Andi".
But even after years, the Doctor occasionally comes running when he hears her shouting out in the night. She'll tell him about her strange dreams, where she's chasing after obscured figures with an indistinguishable sense of familiarity. Like brushing the edges of a memory. The Doctor it reasons it could be her memory trying to restore itself, but no matter how hard she tries she can never catch those dreams. Never hold onto those trickles of memory of who she once was.
In space she found somewhere she belonged, while back on Earth the Holmes have lost a second sister.
Until the dreams eventually lead her back home. With reunions, and the hilariousness of introducing Sherlock Holmes to space travel.
Upon meeting her older sister Eurus however, things grew perilous. The older sister left Andi to burn in the remains of their ancestral home like when Mycroft and Sherlock were children.
The whirring sound of the TARDIS amongst the flames let Andi know she was safe. But to her brothers watching in dread from outside, Andromeda Holmes seemingly died a second time.
