chapter 8: Help from a Friend

"Where are you going?" Zuna hissed, sticking her head out from Mason's backpack.

"Somewhere away from him." Mason answered. Mason knew he couldn't take being beat up anymore. He isn't a murder, and he definitely didn't want to kill Grace. He continued walking until he ended up at a dirt path leading uphill.

"Isn't that where that star girl lives?" Zuna ask.

"Yep, and so far, she and her uncle are the only who can help." Mason said walking up the hill.

"Well yeah, I can't wait for the girl's uncle to beat you up. Ha!" Mason rolled his eyes and continued to walk. Once he finally reached the top, he was astonished to see how big the house was. He walked up to the front porch; he took a deep breath before knocking. After five seconds or so after he knocked Grace answered the door. She was surprised to find Mason at the door.

"Mason?" She ask.

"Yeah, I know I'm the last person you wanna see, but I kinda need your help.... And you need mine too." He said sheepishly. Brimstone poked his head between Grace's legs and growled. "Is that your dragon?" He ask. Before Grace could speak, Tom appeared behind her.

"No, he's mine." Tom said arms crossed, he stared down at Mason making become a little uncomfortable.

"I'm sorry to bother, I know that you probably don't like me, but my dad has become crazy, so I came here to warn Grace." Mason said not making eye contact. Tom cocked his for a moment trying to read Mason. Once Tom realized that that Mason was telling the truth, he nodded.

"Come on in." He said calmly and allowed Mason to enter the house. When Mason walked in, he whistled.

"Nice place you got here, Anders." He said.

"Uh, thanks." Grace said. Zuna, who was starting to cramped inside the pack, crawled out and jumped on Mason's shoulders. Grace jumped at the sight of Zuna. Zuna smiled.

"Scared are you girl." She purred.

"This is Zuna, my dragon." Mason explained.

"Oh, hello Zuna!" Grace said.

"Don't get comfortable with me girl." Zuna growled. Tom sat down on the couch. Grace and Mason soon followed.

"May I see your dragon?" He ask.

"Uh, yeah I guess." Mason said and nodded for Zuna to go. She growled but made her way toward Tom. Tom leaned forward looking at Zuna. "I'll be careful if I was you, she doesn't like being petted very much and she's very grouchy."

"Oh I believe it." Tom said grinning. "Pretty dragons like her are always the deadlier ones."

"Hmmph, this Keeper sure knows to flatter a dragon," Zuna purred and made her back to Mason and settled down on the arm of the chair. "You should be taking notes." She told Mason. A moment later, Firestone came flying in with Moonstone in her mouth. He was squirming, yipping. She dropped him on Grace's lap.

"Found him digging through the fridge. Eating some dragon fruit." Firestone said.

"You have two dragons?" Mason ask. Grace smiled and shook her head.

"No, Firestone was my mothers. But since she's not here anymore, my uncle Tom takes care of her." Grace said. "And this Moonstone, my dragon." Mason held his hand out to Moonstone. Moonstone sniffed it curiously, then rubbed against his hand. "Looks like he likes you." Tom said leaning back. "Now, tell me, boy. What warning are you going to tell my niece." Mason flinched, scared to tell them what he was supposed to ever sense Grace moved in this town.

"Well, ever sense you moved here, Grace." Mason started.
"My father has been planning to or trying to.... Kill you." He said hating every word that came out of his mouth.

"What? Kill me!" Grace shouted standing up making Moonstone fall off her lap with a yelp. Tom reached out to Grace and placed a hand on her shoulder making her settle.

"Grace, sit down please." He said and Grace did as her uncle told her, Moonstone jumped back on her lap. He looked up at Zuna and growled.

"Oh, don't even try, pipsqueak, I'm way stronger and bigger than you are." Zuna growled back. They ignored the dragons and continued to talk.

"Why does he want me dead?" She ask in tears.

Mason breathed, being careful of the words he chose. "The same reason he wanted your parent's dead." He said shamefully.

"What!" Grace shouted again, eyes flaming. Tom gave him a cold look. "You killed my parents!" Grace cried.

"Now, Grace don't jump to conclusions." Tom said trying to calm her down, but Grace wouldn't have it. The information given to her was too much to take in.

"No! My parents are dead because of him!" Grace shouted and pointed at Mason, who flinched. Stressed and confused, Grace ran upstairs and disappeared into her bedroom with Moonstone, Firestone, and Brimstone at her heels.

"It wasn't me I swear!" Mason tried to say, but Grace had already disappeared. Tom stood up and placed a hand on Mason's shoulder.

"I know." Tom said.

"You do?" Mason ask.

"Yes, I know. And I will not hold it against, because I can see that you are different from your father and the rest of your family. I can assure you Grace be fine. Just let her cool off for a bit, it's a lot of information to give her. This is new to her." Tom smiled at Mason, and he relaxed in the couch and nodded. For once, Mason didn't feel like the bad guy.

Grace sat on her bed crying. Firestone and Brimstone had their heads on her lap trying to comfort her. Moonstone sat on her shoulder leaning against her purring. "You know it's not his fault Grace." Firestone said warmly. "It was his father, he had nothing to do with my Keeper's and your father's death."

"You shouldn't have jumped to conclusions, my dear." Brimstone said calmly.

"Yeah, I know. It just... I just got upset and I didn't know what to do." Grace sniffed.

"Well, I think someone deserves apology, Gracie." Brimstone said. Grace nodded, got up and headed downstairs.
