chapter 3: Research
Grace got home to her uncle waiting for her. "How was school?" Tom ask.
"Good." Grace said.
"Did you stay away from that boy?" He ask. Grace went to open her mouth but the only word that came out was,
"well...um..." Tom did a low growled.
"I told you to-"
"I know, I know I didn't even talk to him. Plus I can't help it if we have the same path back home and..." Grace was trying to say, and Tom sighed.
"Fine, fine, just..." Tom didn't have the words. "... Just try to away from him, OK?"
"OK, but I'm curious, uncle, what does this mean?" Grace said showing her birthmark. "Because Mason has the same one but it's a moon and..." Before she could finish her sentence, Tom put up a hand and walked away. "What are you keeping from me!" Grace shout at him. "Why are you keeping secrets from me! Whatever it is I can handle it, Tom!" Tom stopped in his tracks, then waited for a while, then continued to walk. He kept walking until he went to his study, went inside, and slapped the door behind him. Grace growled and marched her way towards the library. 'If he won't tell me, maybe I can find something in here.' She thought.
Grace spent hours searching and reading through books, but to no anvil. She slammed one book shut and with frustration she got up and put the back in its place. She grabbed another book and when she was about to walk away, she notice something. In the back of the self where she got her book there looked to be a safe imbedded in the wall. Grace removed the other books to reveal the black square door.
Grace reach in and pulled the handle. It hissed as it opened. Inside was a book called, Markings of ages. Grace grabbed the book, shut the safe and placed the other books back. She sat down back in her chair and flipped to the first page. Tiger jumped on the table which made Grace jump. ''You won't tell Uncle Tom about this right?'' Ye-ow Tiger answered back. ''Good!'' She rubbed his head.
Grace spent forever reading and flipping through the pages. Then she came to page that said the star marking. Grace took a glance at her mark and continued to read. It read: the star marking is the marking of guidance. The star marking looks more like the northern star meaning like all stars in the sky it shows people the way. Gives them guidance and courage. Legend has it that one day a star mark and a Crescent moon mark will one day meet and save a feud that has been going on for generations to generations.
"Mason." Grace said to herself. She remember he had that marking. Grace took a glance at Tiger who just stared back with his green cat eyes and read on. She flipped through pages until she saw another page that said history of the markings, it read: there are many of these markings and to a regular person, it looks like a normal birthmark, but to those have the Marks know that they are a very special group of people called Keepers. Keepers of the dragons... ''Dragons!'' Grace exclaim to herself. She read on. Each marking represents a person and their destiny, of how they will live and what dragon to take care of. People called them 'the Keepers of Dragons' or guardians. And what they do is protect their very own special dragon that the dragon him\herself as chosen.
And they become their guardians until the day they die. But their descendants carry on this gift until the end. Unfortunately, because of the different types of Marks, some like the Star and Moon, often times don't get along due to their differences. Sometimes these differences tend to start feuds and other times war...
"Gracie?" Tom called from the library door. Grace jumped and slammed the book shut.
"Yes, uncle?" She said without looking him in the eyes.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you." He said. "It's just.... Right now.... It's just a little hard. First the death of your parents and trying to take care if you..." He trailed off.
"Then why did you take me in, if was going to be hard?" Grace ask.
"Because I didn't want to see you in a foster home, you're family Grace, and you never give up on family... Plus I promised your mother that I would always take care of you if anything were to happen."
"You did?"
"Yes, I promised I'll take care of you if anything were to happen to her. So all I'm trying to do is protect you. If something would happen to you, I'll would have never forgiven myself..." he paused. "Now wash up, dinner will be in ten." And with that he walked out. Grace sighed and hid the book somewhere Tom will never find it and went to get ready for dinner.

Grace went to school the next day. Tom try to make conversation with Grace on the way to school, but Grace wasn't in the mood to talk to her uncle. She had made it through most of the day without any disturbance, up until fifth period when her locker had decided to give her trouble. By the time Grace had finally opened her locker and got her stuff, the minute warning bell rang, making Grace rush through halls. She was in such as rush that when she turned the corner to class, she ran into somebody making books and papers scatter everywhere. "Hey! Watch-" she heard that someone said, and then their anger turned into laughter. "In a rush, Anders?" Looking up from picking up her scattered papers, Grace saw Mason squatting down next to her, also picking up his own papers and books.
They continued to pick up their books in silent. Grace went to reach for her book that had slide far away, but Mason reached for it and handed it to her. "Here you, Anders." He said and Grace took her book from him. As she did so, she couldn't help but notice the moon mark that rested on his forearm.
"Thanks." She muttered and grabbed her last item before rushing off to class, late. After school Grace waste no time getting home. She decided to take a different route home so that she could avoid Mason, especially after their awkward in counter. When she got home her uncle Tom had ask her the exact same question he had always ask. Grace decided to stretch the truth. "It went fine, and no I didn't not run into Mason today after school, I took a different route today."
"Good! And keep it that way." Tom said and went to his study. Grace rushed to the library once she saw the study door closed. She went to the hiding place where she had hidden the book. She went to her table and sat down. She quickly flipped through the pages until her eyes set on, the moon mark. It read,
The Moon Mark, or the Crescent Moon, are more of the bipolar family. Like the moon, they can go through their phases of moods. They are the more stubborn family Marks who are very set in their ways. Though it said that one day the Moon Mark and the Star Mark will day unite to co-exist as one family Mark...
"What are you reading?" Her uncle ask. Grace jumped and slammed the book shut.
"No- nothing." She manage to say. Her uncle walked over to her and peered at the book.
"Interesting, this book isn't supposed to be in here, where on earth did you find it?" Her uncle ask while taking the book off the table.
"In- in the library." Grace answered.
"Um, very well. I might as well return it where it really belongs then." He said walking out of the library.
"Wait!" Grace protest. "What are you not telling me! Please I need to know!" He uncle stopped with a sigh.
"In the future, Grace, in the future.... When the time is right." Was all he said and walked out.
"What! No! Uncle!!!" Grace yelled after him. Grace sunk back and her chair with a heavy sigh. 'I will find out. I will, Grace thought.
