Chapter 29: Intruder

"You idiots!" Mr. Reynolds shouted to three of his men who stood in front of his desk in his office. "How could you let them find each other!" The men in front of him cringed.

"It wasn't our fault." One of the said. "We tried everything we coul-"

"Well that isn't good enough!" Mr. Reynolds interrupted. "Now get out of here and I don't care how you do it, just get it done."

"Yes, sir." Said another and they quickly scurried from his office. Mr. Reynolds growled and leaned back in his chair. Idiots, he thought again.

"I told you it wouldn't work," Shadow said from his spot in the shadowy part of the office. Mr. Reynolds ignored his dragon and sat there in complete silence, until it happened. A bright light flashed surrounded the office blinding him and making Shadow hissed and hide underneath his wings. When the flash of bright light came to end, Mr. Reynolds felt nauseous. He put a hand to his head and groaned. When the wave of nausea passed over, Harrison felt a tingle on his upper right arm and feared the worse. No, he thought and quickly pulled up his sleeve to reveal his crescent moon mark accompanied by the northern star mark.

"No!" He yelled and stood swiping the items on his desk off in pure rage. He could feel his blood boil. That no good son of mine, he thought. He'll pay, they'll all pay. Mr. Reynolds then pulled opened one of his desk drawers.

"What are you doing?" Shadow asked slowly folding his wings back to his side. Mr. Reynolds grabbed the small pistol from the drawer and made his out of the office.

"What I should've done in the beginning."

The flash of bright light quickly left as it came. Grace felt sick. Her head was spinning, it was starting to hurt slightly. She had to lean on a chair just to keep her from falling. Looking over, she could see Mason was sitting in a chair his fingers massaging his temples and Uncle Tom was using the table to keep him from falling. "Urggh." Grace mumbled and made her way over to the table. She noticed that dragons were also the same as they were. They shook their heads and tried to find their footings but found it difficult. Finding a chair next to Mason, Grace sat trying to remember what had just happened. It was all a giant blur, but she could make out a few things, like Mason performing a spell to break the one that they were in and a bright light.

"That is something I don't wish to experience ever again." Mason said groggily. He dropped his hands from his head and looked at the palm of his hand where he had cut it. To his surprise, the cut was no longer there. No scar, no nothing. It was like it had never happened.

"Did we, do it?" Grace asked and looked at her uncle who had finally recovered. He looked at Grace and Mason and smiled softly at them.

"I believe so, Gracie." Tom said. "I have my old memories back... and some blurry new ones as well." Grace smiled and wrapped her arms around Mason.

"You did it." She told him.

"Yeah," he said. "But I feel guilty." She knew what he meant.

"Don't." She told him. "This was how it was meant to be. I'm not mad."

"Nor am I." Tom said. "You did a good thing, son." Mason smiled sadly and relaxed into Grace's embrace.

"You may not be, but I am." Said a deep voice from across the library. The three of them stood at attention and looked to see Harrison Reynolds stepping into view, a gun in his hands. "You should've just let things be." He said. "You had your parents back, isn't what you wanted?" Grace felt tense and frankly, a little scared. The man had totally lost it and now he threaten their lives. Mason stepped in front of Grace, one arm put in front of her, putting some distance between her and his father. "And you." Harrison said to his son. "Such a disappointment."

"Now let's talk about this," Tom said trying to step around the table but Harrison turned the gun on him making Tom stop.

"Not another step." He hissed. "I've had it. And I will be damned if I have to wear this stupid star mark. I won't have it."

"It's too late." Grace said. "You can't get rid of it. Nor can you escape it." Mr. Reynolds aimed the gun back over to them.

"Watch me." He said and squeezed the triggered. Everything happened in one swift moment. One moment they were celebrating, the next a gun was going off. Grace screamed, Mason cover her with his body and Tom charged forward but tripped over a chair.

"No!" Tom shouted and watched in horror as the gun discharged. As the gun went off there was flash of bright red as it jumped in front of the bullet. The bullet hit it making the red flash squeak in pain and thud to the ground. Grace uncovered herself from Mason to see what happened and went pale when she saw Firestone laying in front of them, dead. She had jumped in front of them just in time to save their lives. Grace gasped and went over to the small dragon.

"No, no, no." She sobbed. Mason stood there, just as shocked but furious and Mr. Reynolds stood there a little pale. He didn't want to shoot the dumb dragon. She got in the way. But before he even think about his next move, Tom rushed him and grabbed the gun from him. Harrison tumbled over and fell to the floor. Tom held the gun to Harrison and said to Mason,

"call the police." Mason fumbled for his cell phone and dialed 9-1-1. After a moment of speaking with the operator he hung up and joined the sobbing Grace on the floor. He looked at the lifeless dragon on the floor and felt his rage rebuild inside of him. It quickly evaporated when he looked over at Grace who was still sobbing. He reached over and held Grace close to him as she cried into his chest. Today was a day of victory, but without a cost. They all remained were until they heard sirens screeching in the distance.
