Chapter 28: The Time Spell

Thomas Anders was reading his daily newspaper while listening to soft music from his radio when he heard someone knocking on his door. He peered over his papers curiously. Rarely did anybody come to his door. Mostly because a lot of people didn't want to make the long trek up the big hill. Tom looked over at Brimstone and Firestone who were both relaxing on the couch next to him. The soft knock came again. "I wonder who that can be." Tom wondered out loud. "You two better hide." Brimstone stretched and hopped off the couch, but Firestone jumped on head of couch and stared at the door. She sensed something was amiss.

"I sense something," she said. Tom gave her a wary look. Firestone's senses were usually never wrong and were not to be taken lightly. Nodding to her, Tom went up to the front door and opened it. And when he did, he saw something that he never expected to see.

"Grace!" He said with surprised as he looked down at his niece. She looked up at him worriedly. "What are you doing here?" He looked from Grace to the young man standing next to her. Tom recognized the young man to be Mason Reynolds, son of Harrison Reynolds. Before Tom could say anything else, Grace jumped in.

"Uncle Tom," she said redrawing in her uncle's attention. "Somethings happened, we need your help." Uncle Tom looked between Grace and Mason several times. Again Grace jumped in. "I know about the dragons, about the Prophecy, everything." To show proof, Grace pulled up her sleeve and showed her uncle the combined mark on her upper arm. She quickly nudged Mason to do the same thing.

"How-?"

"We can explain once we're inside and away from prying eyes." Mason interrupted Tom who gave Mason an untrustworthy look.

"It's okay, Tom." Grace said. "You can trust Mason." Nodding slowly, Tom opened the door wider and stepped aside to allow them to enter. Grace and Mason entered and went over to the couch to sit. Tom followed them and took the opposite couch. The moment Tom opened his mouth to speak, the telephone rang making them jump. Giving them a sideways glance, Tom stood to answer the phone. As he did so, Brimstone and Firestone jumped on the coffee table to look at them. Grace smiled at them, happy to see that the little dragons were okay.

"Slow down, Lauren, I can't understand you." Tom said from the other side of the room. He was talking into the phone Grace's mom was on the other end. "Ran away?" Tom looked at Grace suspiciously. Grace gave him a pleading look, begging him not to tell her mom where she is. After a moment of staring at each other, Tom said, "no, I haven't seen her... yes if I hear or see anything, I will let you know... yes, of course..." A few more words were exchanged before Tom hung up the telephone and walked back to the couch. "You better have a good story for making me lie to your mother who is also my sister."

"And I do." Grace said. Grace and Mason then proceeded to tell Tom about the strange timeline they are in and how Grace's parents were supposed to have died in a car crash due to Mr. Harrison and how she moved in with Tom and discovered the dragons and the prophecy. They then told Tom how they both completed the prophecy and saved the world from total darkness. The rest of the events that happened after that also unraveled ending with Grace running away, finding Mason, and coming here. Purposing failing to tell Tom about them going to the park before coming here. "And it seems that we are the only ones who remember what has happened." Grace said wrapping up the story. Zuna, who had crawled out of Mason's pack and had taken it her duty to lay on the couch arm gave Grace and Mason a curious look.

"Which is why I believe you to be crazy?" She commented.

"Precisely," Mason said. "And hey, I am NOT crazy." Zuna snorted and placed her head between her paws and decided to take a nap. Uncle Tom leaned back on couch in deep thought. That would explain everything. Tom had been having a feeling that something was off. Even Firestone senses were going off the fritz. He then proceeded to think about the weird "timeline" that Grace and Mason keep talking about and how they are the only ones who remember. A sudden thought then hit Tom like a bucket of ice. He stood.

"I think," he said. "I know what Harrison did. And we may have a way to fix this mess."

Grace and Mason followed Uncle Tom to the library where he went over a stack of books and moved them to side to reveal a small safe. He opened it and took out an old dusty book. "I didn't remember there being more books in there." Grace said and smiled sheepishly when her uncle gave her hard look. "Umm, this was back when I first came here to begin with. I forgot we were in a different dimension, or timeline, or... whatever this is." Ignoring his niece's comment, Uncle Tom walked over to the table in the center of the room and began flipping through the pages.

"If I am correct about this," Uncle Tom said. "Your father, Mason, had done a very powerful spell. One that messes with the timeline completely-Aha!" Tom slammed his hand down the page for which he was searching. Unfortunately for Grace, it was all written in Latin, a language that she had not had the privilege of learning yet. "This is a time spell. The user who casts this spell is able to change or tweak a part in time that he or she chooses." Tom looked at Grace. "It would appear from what you told me he had chosen the timeline where he sent out his goons to cause your parents wreck..."

"...Which causing Grace not to come to Simmer..." Mason continued.

"... and not allowing the prophecy to come true." Grace finished looking at Mason. Tom nodded.

"Yes, that would appear to be his goal."

"But I don't get it," Grace continued. "How come Mason and I remember anything from the previous timeline but not you?" Tom looked at the page and said,

"Only user of the spell can remember any past or future events that has yet and not yet occurred."

"That doesn't explain for us, old man." Mason said and Tom huffed.

"You did not let me finish, young man." Tom said gruffly. "It would appear your father did not read the fine print." Grace and Mason looked at each other. Even the dragons gave curious looks. "It says here that there is a consequence with performing this spell. If the chosen timeline is to interfere with a larger historical phenomenon, it will also effect the people."

"Meaning?" Mason said.

"Meaning that because Harrison caused Grace's parents not to crash, caused the two families not to intertwin liked it was supposed to," Firestone said reading from the page herself. "Which would cause the two people, which being the two of you, to also be effected by the spell. So you two remember because you were supposed to join our families."

"I get it" Grace said with a smile and turned to Mason. "We remember because your dad messed with something that wasn't supposed to be messed with and we're supposed to fix it...again." Tom sighed and scratched his head.

"And to think this morning the only thing I thought was crazy was the protest going on recently." Tom said and shook his head.

"You know," Brimstone said. "This would explain why the egg was so restless." Grace looked at Brimstone.

"Egg?" She said. "You mean Moonstone was never hatched either because of this time change?" Brimstone looked at Grace with his amber eyes. Studying her for a moment.

"It would appear so," he said.

"Then what are we waiting for," Grace said turning to her uncle. "Is there a way to break this? I would very much like my old life back." Uncle Tom looked at his niece, his niece that he hasn't seen since her brother, Garret, has been born. He looked at the page and started to nod to himself.

"It will take a moment for me to gather the materials, but I think we can break this spell. I will need some time." He said and then relooked at Grace and smiled. "In the meantime, why don't you go and get your dragon, mm?"

Grace wasted no time in rushing out of the library, up the metal stairs, and to the dragon's room. And luckily, it was unlocked. Grace remembered when she first moved here this room was off limits and it drove her half mad trying to figure out what her uncle was hiding. If it weren't for Mason dropping hints and making her curiosity spike, Grace would have not known about the dragons until it was too late.

Grace went into the room and took in its familiarity. It was the same old room that she has been in a dozen times after discovering about the dragons and getting Moonstone. And speaking of Moonstone... Grace speed walked across the room to the tall wardrobe closest. She opened it to find Moonstone's egg laying inside. The egg, as Brimstone said earlier, was restless. It was wobbling back and forth in the nest of blankets. Smiling, Grace picked up the egg and took it over the window seat where she sat down and placed the teal blue egg on her lap. "Come on," she told the egg. "You can come out now, it's me, Grace." Grace waiting impatiently as the egg continued to wobble in her lap. The egg stilled after a moment and Grace started to hear the sound of the shell cracking. A huge smile spread to her lips as she watched as small cracks appear on the egg. The cracks spread with each push that the small dragon inside gave. Soon the top half of the egg cracked opened, and the head of a small blue dragon appeared.

Its yellow-orange eyes stared at Grace, and she stared back. "Hello, Moonstone." She said. "It great to see you again." Moonstone cocked his head and wiggled the rest out of the egg and plopped down on Grace's lap. Grace laughed and hugged her dragon close. "I've missed you." She told Moonstone, but when he didn't respond, she felt her heart tug at her. That's right, she thought to herself. You're a hatchling again, you can't speak yet. Sighing, but no longer caring, she hugged her dragon again. Grace suddenly heard Mason clear his throat from the doorway. She looked at him and noticed the serious look on his face.

"The old man got the ingredients together." Mason said. "You ready?" Grace nodded.

"Ready as I'll ever be." She said and joined Mason by the doorway. "Look," she said showing him her dragon. "I got my dragon back." Mason chuckled and scratched Moonstone behind the horns.

"At least we're one step closer to fixing this mess that he caused." Grace tilted her head at him and gave him a small smile. Then leaning forward, she gave a quick peck on the check.

"This isn't your fault," Grace told him. "No one could have predicted that he would go to such lengths." Mason nodded then directed Grace in the direction back to the library.

"Shall we then?" Grace put her game face on, but not before looping her arm around his arm.

"We shall."

Uncle Tom was waiting for them in the library and was a little shocked to see Grace holding the little dragon in her arms. The shock then turned to a slight frown when he noticed their linked arms. Discarding it though, he motioned them to join him and the dragons. "The ingredients." He told them showing them various of items spread out on the wooden table. "We're just messing one more ingredient though." Grace and Mason looked at him.

"And that would be?" Mason said, Tom looked at Mason seriously.

"The blood of the person who did the spell." Grace's eyes widened and Mason paled. "We only need a couple of drops." Tom finished noticing their worried expression.

"But how can we get a couple drops of his blood?" Grace said. "No doubt he is hiding in his office building which is heavily guarded if I remember correctly." Tom raised an eyebrow at the comment, but best decided not to question it. Nothing surprised him anymore.

"Well it's not technically literal," Tom told Grace. "The blood doesn't have to come directly from him, but..."

"...but someone of his blood can." Mason finished and Tom nodded.

"Yes. And like I said, it will only cause a couple drops or so. Nothing worth missing." Mason thought for a moment and nodded.

"Ok, let's do this." Tom spent a good ten minutes taking the other ingredients and mixing them together in a bowl. He then turned the book over to Mason and handed him a small knife.

"Say these words as you do so," Tom said. "And then think about the timeline on which you wish to fix. That should break the spell." Mason breathed in deep and placed the knife to the palm of his hand. Just as he was about to say the words, he hesitated. He looked over Grace.

"You do realize if I do this, your parents..." Grace placed a hand on his shoulder, a pain look on her face.

"I know." She said. "But we have to, this timeline isn't right... we both know that. I've accepted that." She gave him a small sad smile. "It's ok." Taking in another deep breath, Mason prepared himself. Looking down at the words that he quickly memorized, he hovered his hand over the bowl and made a small cut on it. Mason began to recite the words and let a couple of drops of blood fall into the bowl of ingredients. As he did so, a bright light flashed in the bowl and Mason concentrated on the timeline he wished to fixed. He kept that in mind as the light from the bowl continued to get brighter and brighter. It got so bright, that they had to cover their eyes. The light did a suddenly bright flash. They saw nothing but white.
