chapter 18: Rescue

Garret was blinded by a light when someone ripped off the cloth bag that kept him from seeing anything around him. He had to blink several times to adjust to the new lighting. Once his eyes adjusted, Garret realized that he was sitting in a chair, but surprisingly not tied up. He looked beside him to see a man standing in corner, hands folded neatly in front of him. Ahead of Garret, he saw another man sitting in behind of a desk, his deep blue's staring intently at Garret. "I should've known better than to think that Lauren only had one child. But you're living proof, I suppose." The man said leaning back causally in his chair. Garret's heart thumbed against his chest at the mention of his mother's name. And several thoughts went through his head that moment, who was this guy? How does he know mom? And what does he want with me? The man in front of him chuckled, as if reading Garret's thoughts and finding them humorous.

"W-who are you? And what to you want with me?" Garret asked.

"In reality?" The man said. "Nothing. You bear no mark so you're almost useless to me. Almost." The man shrugged. "But it's your sister that I want." Garret's eyes went wide.

"My-my sister?" Garret stuttered. "But why-." Before Garret could finish his sentence, a black creature with golden eyes jumped up on his lap, making Garret yelp. He looked at the creature to realize that is was a dragon. A living breathing dragon. The man at the desk tilted his head, a glint of amusement in his eyes.

"I bet you don't know about the world of dragons do you, Garret?"

"How did you know-" A hiss from the black dragon silenced Garret.

"Don't worry though, it will make sense later... I just need you to get to your sister." The man leaned forward in his chair, resting folded hands on the wooden desk. "Your sister has caused me a great deal of pain... she turned my own son and daughter against me, and now our families are forever linked." Garret gave the man a curious look. His sister never really did anything to anyone. She was completely harmless! And what did he mean that their families are forever linked? What did his sister do? Before any more questions could be spoken and before the man could say anymore, the lights began to flicker than go out completely.

"What the-?" The man said. "Winston! What's the meaning of this?!" The man standing in the corner, or Winston, came to full attention, he moved from his spot.

"I-I don't know, sir. The power must have gone out." Winston said and the man growled. He furiously typed on his computer next to him, but the power did not come back on. Suddenly, a look crossed him face.

"Watch the boy," he said to Winston and started out the door. "Come along, Shadow, we got work to do." The black dragon, or Shadow, looked at Garret, bared his fangs, and follows his master out the room.

Mason smiled from where he sat in the back of Tom's car, parked near his father's business. The laptop he brought from his home has done its work. For years Mason has been hacking into his father's business network, and finally after all these years, he got to use it. The hacking was easy, but the coding and recoding took some time. But it was worth it. "Done." He said with his devilish grin. "I shut down the whole building. No lights. No security. We'll be invisible." Grace looked at him from beside him. She narrowed her eyes at the numbers and codes that littered the computer screen. She shook her head.

"You can't pass algebra, but you can do this?" She said stroking Moonstone's spikes as he laid on her lap. Mason grinned at her and shrugged.

"Guess not." Closing the laptop, Mason leaned forward in the car to where Tom sat in the driver's seat. "Alright, old man," Mason continued. "You'll be our getaway driver. Once Anders and I get Garret we'll make a beeline back here. We only got about thirty or so minutes before the morons in there finally figure what went wrong and fix it." Tom scoffed at being called old man but agreed to the plans. Firestone and Brimstone, who sat in the passenger side seat, looked worried. "Ready, Anders?" Mason asked Grace. Grace took a deep breath and nodded.

"Ready."

They it made through the doors with little no problem. The whole entire building was dark. Mason had done a good job. The two, with each of their dragons sitting on their shoulders, moved through the building keeping to the shadows. There were several times when they had to squeeze into a small dark corridor or another room when they saw security sweeping the area. "If anything." Mason whispered as they snuck around a corner avoiding security. "My father would have your brother in his office. It's just down a few more halls." Grace nodded, afraid to speak because of the fear of getting caught. She trusts Mason, full heartedly. She knew that he would help get her brother no matter what the cost was. He was a good friend, or boyfriend. Their status was always complicated. But that didn't matter. What matter was getting Garret back. And tell him the truth, the whole truth, she thought as she followed Mason down a few more hallways.

"I-I do-don't like th-this." Moonstone said from his perch on Grace's shoulder. And she couldn't agree more.

"Quit being a newborn hatchling, you baby." Zuna hissed from her spot-on Mason's shoulder.

"I n-not a b-baby!" Moonstone whined back.

"Both of you knock it off," Mason whispered loudly. "We're almost there." And indeed they were. Just a few doors down was Garret.

Garret shifted nervously in his chair. The guard next to him paced back and forth, keeping his eyes on the door and him. Very serious, Garret thought. But is happening? Garret was still very much confused. He saw an actual dragon! He didn't really think that they existed. He knew his mother loved them and his sister had noticed that, but living, fire-breathing dragons! It was all too much. He wanted to go home. To once again be with his mother and father. To feel their warm embrace and loving kisses. Garret sighed mournfully. There was a sudden sound of scraping feet on the hard floor and the guard beside him fell down with a yelp and a thud. The guard hit head on the floor and went unconscious. Looking at the guard, Garret saw a blue and a purple reptile, no wait, dragons. Garret gulped.

The purple dragon snorted with satisfaction and turned to Garret. He held his breath thinking that it was going to attack him. But it didn't. Soon two more set of feet came rushing into the room. "Oh thank God!" He heard a familiar voice. Grace, he thought. "You're alright!" She came rushing toward him and pulled him into an embrace. "Come on let's get out of here." Garret couldn't agree more. He got out of the chair to see Mason being look out at the door.

"Coast is clear, grab your brother and the dragons and let's go." He said. As they ran from the room and down the hall, Garret suddenly remembered.

"Wait, Grace," He said. "Th-that man. He, he wants you. And I don't know why but he said that you destroyed everything of his, is that true?" Grace looked at her brother and Mason gave a sideways glance.

"I promise," Grace said as they made their way through the building. "Once we get back to the house and away from here, I'll tell you everything." The front doors came into view and the three, with Moonstone and Zuna being on each of their person's shoulder, picked up the pace... until.

"Hey! Stop right there!" One of the security guards yelled, and the three made a full-on sprint to the doors. Garret thought that they were going to get caught until the purple dragon on Mason's shoulder breathed in a mighty breath and released a stream of purple flames at the guards. They screamed and fell back. Above them, the lights started to flicker back on.

"Come in, keep it up, if we don't make it before the power comes back on, we'll be stuck in here." Mason said.

"Why is that?" Grace asked huffing.

"Because thedoors will lock that's why." There was no need of further explanation. They picked up the pace even more. The lights flickered faster, and they ranharder. The doors came closer. Just as the lights fully came back on, theyheard the building start coming alive. At full speed with no intentions ofstopping, the three shoved themselves out of the self-locking doors and intothe cool night air. They landed on the ground with thud, tripping on oneanother. Behind them, the doors slammed shut and the doors locked with a loud, click.
