Chapter 16: Garret goes on a Mission

For past few days, Garret has noticed that his sister, Grace was acting weird, weirder than usual. Everything now and then he would see Grace enter the "forbidden" room. And each time he went to have a peek, he heard talking with no answers following her random questions. And when she came out, she acted like nothing had happened. He noticed on multiple occasions that she stuff the key to the room in her pants pocket. The time he spent here with his uncle and sister has been a strange one. But at least it was better than his grandparents.

His Uncle Tom though was the strangest of them all. Garret has also notice that his uncle was very secretive. He never said much and most of the time he spends his time reading his daily paper. Though he did remember Grace saying that Tom was old school and preferred to read from the newspaper than actually watching the news itself. Which by wandering around the place, Garret could see that. There was not a single television in sight. Garret often wondered if it has driven Grace crazy yet.

Another thing that Garret has often found weird was Grace's boyfriend, Mason. Right away Garret could see that Mason was the kind of guy who was all talk and no action. Which made Garret wonder what drew his sister to date a guy like him. He asked her once, the only thing he gotten was, "we have more in common than you think. He doesn't like give much of any personal details to anyone."

"Like what details?" Garret asked.

"None that really concerns you. I know Mason wouldn't like me giving out anything that make him feel vulnerable." Garret had raised an eyebrow and pressured her more information, but Grace wouldn't budge. One late evening when Garret had finished his shower, he walked down the stairs and started pass his Uncle Tom's study. Garret has often seen Tom disappear into this study to work on his finances, but the funny part was, as Garret thought about it, he had never seen Tom go off to any type of work. He asked Grace this one day when they were in the library. "Oh, that's because a long time ago, our three times great grandparents actually owed that entire acres of the town.

And the people who wanted to buy off the land to build a small town. They agreed. So now they own tons of money from the land and the contact they sign states that they will keep paying them money for generations on." Grace told him. "That's why Tom doesn't work at any place." Garret had found this all interesting as he was slowly learning about his family heritage.

Garret continued to walk pass Tom's office when he heard Grace's voice come from inside. "I hate this." He heard her say stubbornly. "I don't like the fact that I have to keep them a secret from Garret. He's part of the family, he should know!" There was the sound of paper shuffling when Grace finished.

"I know, Gracie, but it is safer if Garret doesn't know." He heard his uncle say. "Things are different now that the prophecy was fulfilled all those months ago. But unfortunately, Harrison Reynolds is very unstable at the moment, as Mason has already told us before. We can't risk your brother getting hurt or in the way. If Harrison knew about Garret, I'm afraid that he'll use him somehow against us, especially you, Grace." Prophecies? Hurt? In the way? Garret thought numbly as he listened in on their conversation. Pressing his ear closer to the door, he heard Grace huff and mumble something that couldn't be heard through the door. "Speaking of your brother," Tom continued. "Where is he?"

"Taking a shower last I checked." Grace said. There was a short silence that followed.

"Well I am presuming that he'll be done any minute now, so off you go, young lady." Grace growled.

"Fine." She said. "But at least tell me that this will get easier... the secret thing, which is?" Another silence, longer this time.

"Keeping secrets, especially from those you love, is never easy, Grace." There was no more talking as Garret heard Grace's footsteps come closer to the door. Gasping, Garret scrambled away and ran up the stairs. Just as he reached the top, he heard Grace say,

"oh, cool, you're done taking a shower. Want to play some board games or something?" Garret looked down the stairs to see Grace standing there calmly, as if the conversation between her and Tom never happened.

"Y-yeah, sounds like fun." Garret said and descended the stairs.

"Cool, come on." As Garret followed Grace to the closet where the games were kept, one thing was for certain, tonight he was going to see what was in that room.

~~~~
It was around eleven o'clock at night when they all went to bed. The only person who remain awake was Garret, who was waiting a little while for his sister to fully fall asleep. When he thought the moment was right, Garret crept out of bed and into the hall. He stepped lightly as he could as for the floors creaked beneath his bare feet. When he made it to Grace's door he stopped and listen. He heard the slight sound of her breathing. Sleeping. Swallowing hard, Garret opened the door and peered inside. Like he thought, Grace was sound asleep. He crept the rest of the way in, glancing to right then his left, not really knowing why, it was just him and Grace in the room. He tiptoed to her closet and opened the door with a loud creak. Garret flinched and looked over at Grace who tossed in her sleep. Sighing, Garret opened the closet door the rest of the way and went to the laundry basket. Normally he would not go through his sister's laundry basket like this, but enough was enough. No more secrets, no more.
Luckily Grace's pants were on top, so he didn't have to dig. He took the pants and rummaged his hands in each pocket. But there was no key. Where could it be? He thought as he looked around Grace's room. His eyes landed on Grace's nightstand where a sliver key was laying lazily on top of its wooden surface. Garret mentally slapped himself. Of course, he thought. The only time when you actually empty your pockets. Throwing the pants back in the basket, Garret went over to the nightstand and picked up the key, eyeing Grace as he did so. She did not wake up. Sorry, he thought to his sister. But you left with no choice.... if only you would tell what's going on.
Garret gripped the key tightly in his hand and left her room, silently closing the door after him. Sighing deeply, Garret made his way to the mysterious room. Once there, he stood there for long moment, deciding, thinking. What was behind this door and in this room? Why would Grace keep a secret from him? Her own brother?! Well, that gave Garret enough encouragement to open the door. With a shaky hand, he put the key in the keyhole and turned. The door clicked. Taking in a deep breath, Garret turned the handle and pushed the door open. Once inside, Garret saw the room was dark all except for the big window that let in the moonlight. The window had a small, cushioned seat and the closer Garret got to it the more he saw that there was a big lump on the cushioned seat.
The lump stirred and lifted up its head. It turned towards Garret with glowing yellow eyes. Garret stumbled back, suddenly afraid. Then next to the glowing eyed creature came two more sets of glowing yellow eyes. Monsters, Garret thought. There are monsters in here! One of the glowing eyed creatures then jumped down from the window seat and started its way to Garret. But Garret didn't give it the chance to come any closer because he turned and stumbled out of the room. At this moment, Garret's flight or fight instincts came into play, and right now, it was the flight side of him that took over. Garret ran down the stairs, stumbling a few times and out the front door. He ran down most of the driveway before he stopped to catch his breath. He looked back at the old white house in total shock. What was that? What were those things? And why would Grace and Uncle Tom have them? Thoughts like those plagued Garret as he stood there in cold summer air.
Ok, he thought, there has to be a perfect explanation. Grace and Tom will explain it to me... I'm sure. Though he didn't feel sure. Taking a deep breath, Garret went to make his first steps back towards the house but didn't get the chance when something grabbed him from behind and his vision went black.
