Chapter 15: Keeping Secrets isn't Easy

That morning, Grace took a visit into the dragon room. Tom had given her the key to the room so that she could visit them when she wanted to. The moment she closed the door was the moment that Moonstone jumped up and into Grace's arms. "I missed you!" Moonstone said. Grace laughed.

"I wasn't gone that long, you silly dragon." Grace said holding the little blue dragon. She walked over to the window seat and joined Firestone and Brimstone. She sighed deeply.

"What's wrong, dear?" Firestone asked looking at Grace with her mother like eyes.

"Nothing really," Grace began. "But I don't know how much longer I can keep this from my brother Garret. There's so much that he needs to know. How you, our family history, our... parents." Her eyes cast out the window, watching as a pair of squirrels chased each other around a tree. She suddenly felt a pair of claws and scales on her leg.

"Do you think it was easy for your mother to keep this secret?" Firestone asked. "Don't you think she wanted to tell you? Your brother? To tell you your destiny and the magical world you now live in? It killed her, Grace, not literally of course but on the inside because she knew you would love this magical, dragon world, but she couldn't. She needed to protect you. Just like Tom did when you arrived. He tried to keep his sister promise to not tell you. But you're as stubborn as an old dragon."

"Yeah, well, she should've told me. I would have taken it. I would've understood." Brimstone is the one who spoke next.

"And then what?" He said. "You would have begged to come here and see us, to get your own dragon. That would have put you as an easy target for Harrison Reynolds, Mason's father. It was for your own good, Gracie. I know it won't be easy, but it's easier if your brother is left in the dark on this one. If he knew, that might put him in danger and into Reynold's hands. This life is hard because of the secrets that must be kept, but it's worth it, trust me." Grace sighed deeply. Of course the dragons were right, they were always right, Grace had thought many times. But Garret was her brother, they never kept secrets from each other. But she also didn't want to drag Garret into this still going on feud. It wasn't right. Garret wasn't the one with mark and the keeper of dragons duty to bear. That was hers and everyone else like hers job. Again she sighed.

"Alright, I guess you're right." She said. "It's going to be hard, but I'll try. I love Garret and don't wish for him to be brought into this." Gently pushing Moonstone off her lap, she stood. "Thanks for the talk, you. I'll see you later."

"Anytime." Firestone said and Moonstone waved goodbye with his small scaly paw. Grace waved back and exited to room. When she closed and locked the door, she nearly bumped into Garret who gave her a confused look.

"What were you doing in there?" Garret asked raising an eyebrow. "I thought we weren't supposed to go in there?"

"We-we aren't!" Grace quickly said, feeling panicked. "Uncle Tom asked me to grabbed something in there." Garret looked at her hands and saw nothing.

"Grab what?" Grace looked at her own hands realized her mistake.

"I, um, couldn't find it." She lied. "Uh, come on, let's, um, go downstairs and have, uh, breakfast." Garret wasn't convinced but didn't argue anymore. As Grace gently urged him down the stairs, Garret took one last glance at the mysterious door and wondered what laid beyond its walls.
