CHAPTER 50- IT'S TOO LATE
'Mehran!' Umaira spoke still in shock of seeing him here. Mehran turned his head and smiled looking at her, she quickly looked away feeling awkward.
'Umaira, good you came. See I have sorted everything...now, we can be together.' Mehran walked towards her. She doesn't say anything but kept looking at the floor fidgeting with her fingers.
'Umaira?' Mehran extended his hand to hold hers, but before he could Ibrahim held his.
'Hey? What are you doing here?' Ibrahim asked stepping in between Umaira and Mehran. Umaira nervously took a step back. Mehran didn't flinch, he stood his ground staring at Ibrahim. Ibrahim being six feet was clearly towering over a 5'11 Mehran but that didn't intimidate Mehran.
'Look, I am not here for any trouble. I want to speak with Umaira.' Mehran said sticking out his palm, his eyes looking directly into Ibrahim's.
'Everyone is family here, what you want to say?' Ibrahim said.
'I want to talk to Umaira, alone.' Mehran emphasized the word, alone, to make his stand clear. Ibrahim opened his mouth to speak when Umaira held his arm, 'Ibrahim, give me five minutes.' she then looked at Mehran, 'Come.' She said to him. Ibrahim protested but Umaira assured him she will handle this. Ibrahim reluctantly let them go.
Umaira walked in her room silently followed by Mehran.
'Let it be open.' Umaira stopped Mehran as he was about to close the door. He nodded leaving the door slightly ajar.
'Why are you here?' Umaira asked with a straight face. Mehran smiled 'I have sorted everything.' He said brightly. Umaira didn't understand what he meant. Mehran narrated the incident from the morning, 'I am sorry, Umaira. I shouldn't have spoken the way I spoke but...I was drunk.... I am ashamed of myself.' he finished.
Umaira looked at him blankly, after hearing what Mehran wanted to say she saw a dim light in an otherwise dark tunnel of her love story. Her heart began hoping again.
'Now, we can be together.' Mehran held her hand. Umaira looked at their joined hands, her eyes getting moist. He held her left hand.
'I am sorry, Mehran. It's too late now, for me.' Umaira said eyeing her ring. Mehran looked puzzled. Umaira sighed sadly and looked at him, a tear drop fell from her eyes.
'I love you, Mehran. But... but, it's too late now for anything. Breaking up from my fiancé that too after the wedding announcement...it's not easy...for a woman (she looked up into his eyes, Mehran is numb) I have...I have so many...things on my shoulder...my parent's reputation.... Ibrahim and his family reputation...everything...I am sorry.' She said slowly sliding her hand from his grip. Before she could move her hand away, Mehran held her hand again.
'And you? where are you in all this, Umaira? Where is our love? For the sake of everything else, our love should not suffer.' Mehran reasoned. He is battling his own tears. Umaira shook her head, now letting tears fall from her eyes.
'Please...please don't do this, Umaira. Please.' Mehran pleaded holding her hand tighter.
'I am sorry, Mehran.... I am sorry.' Umaira sobbed trying to pull her hand out from his grip.
Few minutes into pleading, Mehran let's go of her hand 'Fine!' he huffed, 'Do whatever you want but remember (he held her hand and pulled her closer) you will never be happy...ever.' He said harshly. Umaira closed her eyes, she deserves this she thought. After all, she is the one who had ruined everything, initially. Now, she should pay the price. She deserves all the cursing and hatred. Mehran jerked her hand away, she stumbled to her side.
'I am sorry...Mehran...I am sorry.' She chanted sincerely.
'Keep your sorry in your pocket. I shouldn't have come here in the first place.' He said bitterly. Umaira wiped her tears and looked at him, 'Please Mehran, understand. Please.' She plead him. Though she thought she deserves this but seeing hate in the eyes of the man she loves, it's too much for her to bear. Mehran didn't look into her eyes fearing he might fall weak, he simply turned around and walked away. As he left Umaira fell to the ground, she has once again lost him- this time forever.
Ibrahim glared at Mehran but he didn't look any one in the living room, 'Sorry for wasting your time.' he said staring at the ground. Before anyone could react, he walked away slamming the door shut behind him. As soon as he left, Umaira's mother rushed to her daughter's room. She saw her daughter sitting on the floor, a blank expression on her eyes and with moist eyes Umaira stared at the wall front.
Mehran sat in his car and slammed his palm hard on the steering wheel, '****' he cursed loudly. He threw his head back and closed his eyes, Umaira's face flashed in front of his eyes, her words echoed in his ears. 'Umaira! You shouldn't have done this.... I...don't...need you...you can...go to hell.' He said. He then ignited his car engine and drove away in dangerously high speed.
