Chapter Twelve

I woke up with a headache and remembered the nights events. "What's going to happen now?" I wondered aloud, even though there was no one there.
My nose caught a metallic smell in the air. I crinkled my nose as I looked around. My heart started beating rapidly as I caught sight of what was on my vanity mirror. Written in some red substance was the words, 'Every day you don't come back, five citizens will die.'
"Oh, God," I whispered, covering my mouth. Whatever substance the message was written in started to drip. As I walked closer, I found out it was blood and it wasn't dry. I quickly cleaned the mirror, not wanting to smell blood and flopped down on my bed. The stabbing headache I had earlier came back. What was I going to do? The only thing I could do was what the message said. I might have just met my citizens, but I was not going to let them die because of me. There was only one problem - getting out.
-
I spent way too much time deciding on what to wear. All I had were dresses, and they wouldn't allow me to get around easy. So, I took my least favorite dress and made a jumpsuit out of it. It may not have been the prettiest, but pretty didn't matter at that point. Just to be safe, I slid a small dagger in my pocket.
Unexpectedly the owl I had met when I came here flew into my room. It landed on my head and started to tug. It's knife like claws dug into my scalp. For being such a small bird, the thing was awfully strong. I didn't realize where it was pulling me until I fell out of my window. I started screaming and covering my eyes, waiting for death. But instead I fell on feathers and started soaring up. I uncovered my eyes and found out I was flying on the owl. Hot wind was whipping my hair around and all I did was sit there and wonder; was I going to live through this?
Maybe I was stupid to do this and maybe I hadn't thought it through. But as I neared the Day kingdom, I knew it was the right thing to do. Standing in front of the castle was my 'mother'. She looked so different in royal clothing and styled hair - I barely recognized her. The smirk on her face made me want to push her over the edge of the boundary, but I reigned that thought it. Now wasn't the time.
As I landed three guards ran over to me and seized my arms. Lifting me up in the air, we walked into the palace. "Why are you doing this?" I asked, anger in my voice, not wasting any time.
"Because without you we'll never win this war," she responded.
"You always were a terrible mom," I snarled.
"Please," she said, smirking, "call me Jessica."
The guards and Jessica led me away to a dull grey room. They strapped me into a chair and hooked me up to a million different wires. In front of me was another room protected by glass. Jessica stood by a control box and started speaking through a microphone. "Ok, Skyler. We're just going to take that memory of yours and erase it." My heart skipped a beat. I started struggling in the chair.
"No. You can't. Why?" I screamed. My struggling wasn't getting me anywhere.
"Two reasons: One, I can't have you hating me. Two, I can't have you trying to escape or not doing something I say because you're still loyal to your kingdom, now can I?" Jessica said, smiling evilly. "Now let's start." Just as Jessica was about to push a blue button, an alarm went off. "Ugh! The generator went out again! Guys, we need to get this fixed!" she screamed. Turning her attention back to me, she smiled evilly. "I'll be right back. Don't go anywhere - like you can." Then she stomped out, laughing.
Fiery rage started boiling up inside of me. I started lashing out and kicking like I was a toddler. Then my hands started to glow and glow until it was like a bomb went off and I was free. Wires, machine pieces and glass were scattered everywhere, yet I felt none of it. I stood there for awhile, then I realized where I was and started to run. But just as I was about to get out, over one hundred guards stood in front of my only exit. I was toast.
Pain shot up my shoulder as I was grabbed and dragged, thrown into a damp, dark jail cell. "I don't know how you got out, but this time you're not going anywhere," Jessica snarled as she slammed the door shut, locks sounding.
"How do her citizens handle her?" I mumbled to myself, rubbing my shoulder lightly.
"You'll get used to it," a voice says. In the moonlight sat a curled up figure. "My name is Brandon."
Even in the dark I could see his dull brown hair and bright green eyes. He looked like a boy you could only find in a fairytale. I wondered how he got here, why he was here. "How'd you get here?" Brandon asked first.
"Well, that's a long story," I sighed out, resting against the wall.
"I'm not going anywhere anytime soon," he pointed out.
So I started from the beginning. From the message in the stars to the wedding and lockdown. After I finished, I realized I had been crying. "So how'd you get here?" I asked, wiping my eyes.
"I was trying to escape. You see, when I was born I had a star symbol on my forehead," Brandon said, brushing his bangs away and showing me the star. "My parents didn't think much of it until I started wanting to visit the Night Kingdom. Then they threw me out. I had to survive on my own. People had made fun of me all my life, so I decided to go over to the Night kingdom. But as I was trying to go over, they caught me and took me here."
"But how do you know the Night Kingdom would have allowed you through?" I asked.
"Because all Night citizens have star symbols. Even Royals, but when they become king or queen, theirs changes to a moon. I'd show them my star and they'd let me through," he explained, and it brought me back to the conversation with the nurse after I received my star symbol.
"Well then, we're getting out," I said, standing up.
"What?" He asked, clearly taken aback.
"We are getting out," I said more slowly.
"How?"
"Well I think I could get this power thing down," I said. I curled my fists into balls and thought of things that made me furious. A warm tingle started to flow through my hands and another explosion occurred, the blinding light making way for the blown up door.
"Come on," I said, grabbing Brandon's hand. "We aren't staying here any longer."
