Chapter Thirteen

Edited by: thirtxn

As soon as we entered the palace, Twilight came sprinting up to me and wrapped me in a big bear hug. "I thought I lost you again," Twilight cried.

My mom and dad came rushing over to me, too. All of us were in a group hug when someone tackled me. I fell to the ground and laughed when I saw Luna squeezing me.

"Miss me?" a voice asked. Steve came over and helped me up.

"How could I not miss my brother-in-law?" I asked.

Brandon tapped me on the shoulder, "I'm gonna go."

"No! Not ye,." I shouted. "Mom, dad, this is Brandon. He was born in the Day kingdom, but is actually a Night citizen." Father pressed his lips into a thin line.

"How do we know this for sure?" he asked.

Brandon flipped his bangs up and mother and father's faces lit up.

"Oh, that's wonderful that you got out!" Mother said. "You can stay with us for as long as you need to since you have no family here." Brandon thanked mother and I showed him to his room. I was about to say goodbye when he stopped me at the door.

"Um, Skyler? I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go out to eat tonight? I have some money so I could pay for it. But if you don't want to that's fine," Brandon asked, rushing through his words, pointing his head down. My cheeks turned the color of strawberries, but I lifted his chin up to look at me.

"That would be fun. See you around six?" Brandon nodded his head and disappeared into his room.

-

"Hope? Does this look date style?" I asked, looking in the mirror. I decided to pick out my outfit for the date. Hope had made some exceptions and let me wear a pair of dark skinny jeans. I wasn't much of the fashion guru, so on top I put on a shiny, silver top and a white cardigan over that. I had dug in the back of my closet and found some black ankle boots. Hope had quickly done my hair and makeup.

"I think it's just right." Hope smiled. I nodded my head, smiled and took a deep breath. I had never been on a date before. "Ready to go?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," I responded.

-

Brandon stood in the palace entrance with roses in his hands. His head was tilted down as he nervously paced back and forth. I cleared my throat and his head whipped up. He pulled at his collar and laughed. "You look nice."

"Thanks, I decided to go for a sassy look tonight," I smirked, trying to break the tension.

"Well it's really working for you." He smiled. "Ready?" He held out his arm and I took it with glee. "By the way, these are for you," he said, handing the roses to me.

"I could tell," I laughed.

As soon as we got seated in the restaurant a waiter with an enormous mustache came to take our order. When he left to take to tell the chef, Brandon started laughing out loud. "Did you see his mustache?!"

I was sipping my water and spit it all over when I pictured his face again. "I know! It was huge." I laughed, almost choking. The rest of the night was a blast. The food was great and Brandon was super fun. He was so easy to talk to and was extremely funny. It was probably the most fun I've had in a long time.

Once we'd finally gotten back, Twilight was waiting in the entrance for me. "I think I'd better go," Brandon said.

Twilight laughed. "Just want to talk to me sis." Brandon nodded and started towards his room. Twilight linked arms with me and we started walking to my room. "So, how was the date?" She asked. I giggled.

"Fun." I smirked. "He's so funny. And so easy to talk to."

"Always the best kind." Twilight pointed out. "Well I'm glad you had fun. Do I hear any wedding bells in the future?"

"Twilight!" I exclaimed, shoving her to the side. "I barely know him."

"Hey, you barely knew Justin, but you married him in one week."

"That's because I had to," I said, quietly. "I'm going to bed."

"Skyler, wait! I didn't mean to offend you."

I ignored her shouts as I ran the rest of the way to my room. As I was about to enter, I heard footsteps behind me. "I don't want to talk right now," I snapped. No response. I turned around, but instead of Twilight I saw dad. "Sorry, I thought you were Twilight."

"No, it's fine. I just came to see how you were doing," he explained. "I heard you and Twilight fighting."

Tears stood on the brim of my eyes. "I'm honestly not doing well. I just got back from an amazing date and Twilight reminded me of the thing I didn't want to be reminded of. And now my entire night is ruined," I confessed. "Why are we even at war with the Day Kingdom anyway. All everyone mentions is this stupid war!"

Father bit his lip, "do you really want to know?" I nodded my head. "Many years ago, Jessica, your mother and I were good friends. Then Jessica started getting power greedy, because of her mother's insane stories about power. Multiple times she tried to take over the Night Kingdom. But we overpowered her. On the thirteenth time, we had a Caster take her powers so she would be powerless. Ever since, her grudge against us had been more than just a grudge." When he finished, I let go of the breath I didn't even know I was holding.

"What did the Caster do with her powers?" I asked.

"Come with me and you'll find out."

We finally arrived at a dome shaped room that held many security cameras and more than a dozen guards. Father muttered a password to the guards and they stepped aside from where they were blocking the door. Once we were in a second room, he entered a second password into a circular container. The once floating sphere settled on the pedestal and slowly lifted open. Inside of it was a glowing, tear shaped locket. "This is where all her power is stored. Only royalty can open it. Unfortunately that means if Jessica ever gets past, she can get it."

Father gently picked up the locket and opened up my palm. "I want you to have this. Once you put it on, you'll absorb all the power stored in it. The only way Jessica could get it is if she killed you," father explains. I took a deep breath and nodded. Words couldn't describe how terrified I was to have this, but I knew my father counted on me to keep it safe. "Well that's all for now. Off to bed for you," he said, edging me towards the exit.

-

Finally in bed, I stared at the locket. What if I had too much power? What if I became power greedy like Jessica? Then I'd become like her. I shook the thoughts out of my head. No. I'd never let that happen. I'd never become like the person that lied to me for sixteen years of my life.
