stand up prison

Kristy screamed when she read the newspaper that morning. She stared at the headline article, her face drained of all its color as her eyes scanned the headline, Laughter Illegal! Law passed by world government. It was ridiculous, how could they outlaw something like laughter? Not only was it madness to expect people not to enjoy themselves, but it also put her and several of her friends out of the job; she pondered this thought for awhile. Kristy decided it was best to call up someone she trusted.

"Terrence?!" She shouted into her phone after dialing.

"Ugh.... Kristy? What are you doing? It's like..... three in the morning over here..." Terrence replied, this caused Kristy to remember that Terrence lived in Australia, not where she was in California.

"Sorry, but go outside and get your newspaper!" The was a few moments of silence before Terrence screamed in reply to the words on the page in front of him. "So you understand?!" Terrence hung up. Yeah, he understood. Kristy stood up and walked outside, she was horrified by what greeted her. Instead of people coming together in protest, her whole city had broken down into chaos, things were burning and there were people being arrested for laughing.

"You gonna be okay Kris?" A familiar voice asked as it placed it's hand on her shoulder. "I know this puts you out of the job..."

"I'll be fine, thanks Garrett, don't forget to take your medication..." Garrett made a face as he realized that he had forgotten, and her rushed up to his room. Kristy stared at the wasteland that used to be her favorite city on earth. She looked across the street to see a woman standing there with a sign that read, "Doomed To Depression", Kristy sighed, this was real.

After a few months in jail, you'd think Kristy'd be used to it, but she still couldn't get over the fact of the reality she was suddenly living in. Despite being constantly watched by the guards, she was somehow able to put together a stand-up comedy club for her inmates, she did this by tapping into the full prison intercom to present her nightly comedy show, and the guards were running around all night, frantically trying to find the source of the gut-splitting humor that they were sure to get fired over. All the inmates knew it was her, and they loved it, they had caused so much of a ruckus one night that even the guards couldn't help but laugh. Kristy spent all her free time writing jokes, she hoped that this might get her noticed, she wanted to change the world's mind, that laughter was necessary for survival, that they couldn't take away something that is part of human nature. This was her plan for several years, every night there was a new broadcast, eventually the news reached the country council, who couldn't help but laugh themselves. She could bring happiness back to the country, and maybe the world.
