Chapter 6 (31)

~THE BARN~

Kinda long chapter ahead! Just a warning! ⚠

***

They ended the night pretty late. Valarie had already gone up to the barn with Damian. Jason and Dick were bringing in the wood leaving Jack to clean up the kitchen, even though Valarie protested.

"Need any help?" Asks Dick as she finishes cleaning the table.

"No." She shakes her head "I just finished. Where's Jason?"

"Something about locking the gate." Dick states, in question

"Oh. The wolves have been coming in and snatching up the sheep-"

"Wait wolves?" He laughs making her laugh too. "There are wolves out here? Well, considering the geography...I believe it." He answers his own question and they both laugh.
"Damn I've missed you."

"I have too." she grinned leaning on the table. "I hope we have come to a better understanding. I don't need-"

"I'm sorry for trying to take care of you." He said, but it came out cold and bitter

"Unbelievable! Dick I am trying to enjoy you staying here, as my friend. I don't want to have to go through this again. I have Jason to-"

"Yeah I know. You have Jason to take care of you and have no need for my protection."

"Protection! More like coddling! I couldn't even walk without you breathing down my neck. I confided you with my feelings and my thoughts and you took advantage of that!"

"I was being a friend. You left me remember! You left me twice now and only because I let you."

"Let me?" Jack scoffs licking her lips, blinking a few times

"You're happy, right?" He asks "I like seeing you happy. Your happiness is all I want." Said Dick, but she was still stuck on his previous statement.

"You aren't in charge of me, Richard. The audacity..." She says in disbelief walking towards the stair case. "I wish you didn't act like such a guy."

"Jack." He calls, but she still ignored him. "Jack, come on."

"This should last you for the night." Said Jason wiping his hands on his shirt. "Breakfast is at eight and if you hear wolves...don't come outside."

"I'm sorry, did you say wolves?" Asks Valarie with wide eyes

"Yeah. I locked the gate so they shouldn't get in. They like to snatch up the sheep, but if for some reason they get in, don't open the door." Jason says laughing

"I still can't believe you have sheep." Damian laughs along with him. "Thanks again."

"No problem. And let's try and keep the moaning to a minimum. I really don't want to be woken up to that." He jokes

"Goodnight, Jason." Said Damian through his teeth as she nervously laughed. He waved leaving him and Valarie alone in the room.

"That was...that was very awkward. I hadn't really thought of sex since we've been here." Valarie admits "I know you don't want to have sex with me, but I want you to know that it wasn't on my mind for tonight."

"Right." He nodded taking a hold of her hands. "I really just want to lay in that bed and sleep with you beside me. Can we do that?"

"We can." She nodded

They still stood their awkwardly. Damian wasn't quite sure what to do. They stood across from one another and only when Valarie spoke did he realize what was going on.

"I'm guessing I'll change in the bathroom..."

"Right!" He says blinking a few times "Better yet, I'll change in the bathroom." He grabbed his bag and headed in there.

He later emerged and saw Valarie sitting on the bed. "Wow...gray joggers." She gulped scooting to the edge of the bed.

"Is there something wrong with them?" He asks jokingly, spinning around slowly in them. Valarie blushed and laughed. "Come on? Tell me?"

"Yeah, your shirt is still on." She egged on standing to her feet. Tracing her fingers across the fabric, Valarie looks up. "I think it looks better off..."

"Oh does it now?" He chuckled clasping her face in his hand and kissing her forehead gently.

"I brought my laptop and it has every Disney and Pixar movie." She explains, but sees a surprised look on his face. "What?" Valarie giggles

"Nothing. I just...I didn't take you for a Pixar type of girl. You are the type to enjoy the Disney princess fairy tale, happily ever after crap." He jokes making her shove him a bit.

"That was my sister Viola and Violet. They enjoyed the Disney princess fairy tale, happily ever after crap most. I leaned more toward Finding Nemo, Wall-E and Monsters Inc." She told him, flopping onto the bed. "Disney action and adventure movies like Treasure Planet always caught my attention."

"How come?"

"I guess I liked that they weren't living the way I was. They got to escape even just for a bit."

Damian joined her on the bed and they spent twenty minutes discussing what movie to watch. Eventually they settled on; Sinbad: legend of the seven seas. Damian places his head in the crook of her neck, indulging the smell of her skin.

He looked at her more than the movie. She was different and he wasn't sure if it was good or bad.  "I love you." Said Damian in a low voice, kissing the spot behind her ear. His grip around her tightened.

"I love you too." Valarie grinned back, a genuine smile in her voice.

The next morning, early, Damian had woken up early and decided to go up to the house. A little lamp was on so he assumed someone was awake.

"You guys leave the door unlocked?" Asks Damian in a whisper, walking in seeing Jack at the counter with a tub of mint ice cream.

"No one is around to rob us." Jack replied her mouth full if ice cream.

"Is that mustard?" He asked nearing the bowl and seeing mustard stains across the bowl. "At five thirty in the morning."

"We didn't have pickles."

"And what were the pickles for?"

"Pickle and peanut butter sandwich." She answers proudly, licking her lips. "Absolutely devine."

"Gross. But I will refrain from scrunching my nose due to your harmones." He sighed, then flinched back when she plucked him in the forehead.

"My hormones are just fine, jerk wad." She says through her teeth, shoving another spoonful of mint chip and mustard into her mouth.

"What is the strangest thing you have eaten?" He asked genuinely curious.

"Um...they like mustard a lot. We've gone through bottles if it like crazy. But the strangest thing I've eaten doesn't require mustard. Bananas dipped in sour cream and ketchup."

"Wow." He shudders, blinking a few times. He hears her laugh in a low voice as they continue to whisper. "You aren't even supposed to be eating this are you?"

"Really? How could you tell?" She asked sarcastically. He rolled his eyes and leaned on the counter. "Jason goes into town every day. He buys mustard and ice cream, pig feet, beef lips for Sunday dinners. To die for." She says nudging him. "He pretends he doesn't know I wake up in the middle of the night and eat. Its a system."

"I like this, Jack." He admitted out loud as she bites her lower lip. "You're finally living for yourself. If that makes sense."

"I understand now." She stated " what a mother is supposed to feel for her child. I never thought I could love someone I've never met." Her smile looks down to her stomach.

"Why do I get the feeling you're going to ruin it for yourself." He asked, but saw the way her face fell a bit. Jack bit the inside of her cheek and Damian let out a serious sigh. "Jack, what did you do."

"I was the original child of evil prophesize. My mother gave up her heart so I would be spared of that prophecy. And I will do the same for my children."

"What are you talking about? Jack how-"

"I told you I found a solution. I made a deal with the devil. I will give him my heart-"

"What the hell are you talking about!" He almost shouted, his eyebrows narrowed downward. "Jack do you even hear how ridiculous you sound? Giving up your heart? What does that even mean?"

"You can't escape what the universe has already chosen, all you can do is prolong it. I am sparing the world-"

"So what? They can do the same when they have children? Huh!" He slammed his fist down "Why are you telling me this?"

"Keep your voice down!" She hushed, but he rolled his eyes. "And I tell you this, because, when you give up a heart, you give up your ability to feel. You won't be able to feel or give meaningful love-"

"Bullshit!"

"Damian listen, please? I need you to be a constant reminder to Jason that our children are what's important." She begged, taking his hand. "Remind my children that I love them-"

"I can't." He shook his head, but her grip tightend. "You can't ask me to do that for you. It isn't fair."

"Please." She asks again, sparkly tears slip for her eyes "I need a promise from you-"

"What will you do? Leave Jason by himself to take care of your children?" He asked even more pissed off.

"He will have you. He has Bruce, Dick...he has all of you." Jack explained, but still trying to convince herself of it too. "A family. My children will have a family. Something you and I never really got."

"Every family needs a mother." He says softly. "Children will always love their fathers, but will always feel obligated to follow their mothers. Jack you have to be here for them. Every child needs their mother."

She was getting fed up now. Damian preaching to her about what she needed to do. As far as she was concerned this was exactly what she needed to do.

"Teekl I need to borrow some power." She said as the orange stripped cat appeared from the shadows, hopping on the counter.

"What are you doing?" Asks Damian as the cat purred, his eyes turning bright red. "Jack-"

"It will no longer burden your heart, Damian. You won't remember a thing." She answered with a gentle smile. Her arms wrap around him and she could hear his heart thumping loudly.

"Jack-"

"Shh." She whispered "berermem thniong. Loyne ni rouy erhat."

Letting go of Damian, Jack smiled at him and saw him blink a few times. "Feeling better?"

"Uh yeah...what happened." He asked rubbing his eyes. "I-"

"You came here to check on me but it looks like I should have come to check on you." She replied feeling his forehead with the back of her hand. "You feel fine. Maybe all the excitement."

"Yeah..." He mutters "Maybe." He heads for the door. "See you in the morning."

Jack didn't feel bad for what she was doing. The fact that Damian wanted her too made her sad. He'd do what she ask. Subconsciously that is. He helped look after her children tell them stories about her. When Jason wasn't up to the task he would be, Damian would remind Jason of her sacrifice and that it was for a good thing. Damian was going to be the constant reminder Whispering in her children's ears that what their mother did was because she loved them.

"And you look after them as well Teekl." She says picking up the cat.

But she was also unaware that Dick Grayson was on the couch. And unfortunately he wasn't asleep.
