Chapter 4 - First Day

The following day, the morning light shone into my new bedroom. I woke up to see Lucky in my arms. Then, after a few moments of contemplating my situation, Master Luke burst into my room.

"You better get up, Leia! I'm not in a good mood with you." He shouted at me. I immediately got up out of bed with Lucky in my arms. "Here's your maid outfit. Now get yourself dressed." He said as he was leaving the room. Dang, I need to get out of here of this place. I want to go home. When I had finished getting myself ready in the maid uniform, Luke was waiting to ambush me outside my room.

"Finally, you're ready. Why do you have a dog with you?" Luke started to look at Lucky. I began to glare at Luke.

"Nunya," I said to Luke as he started to put his hand near Lucky. I snarled at him, and he was taken aback.

"What the heck, Leia?! Why are you that protective over it?" Luke looks startled.

"Nunya," I replied as I was looking around. Luke started to look a little bit annoyed.

"Right, now I'd better show you around the Manse. This is, so you know where you are and where everything is."

"Yes, Master Luke," I answered as he led me around the Manse. Luke stopped for a moment.

"First thing to remember. The top floor is for royalty. This includes the throne room. You are only permitted to be there if you have to work there. Understood?"

"Understood. A question. What about Her Highness?" I asked.

"Her Highness lives in a little house in the middle of the garden. Their Majesties hoped it would help her health." He answered as he started to walk down the hallway. I followed behind. As we continued walking, we looked into a massive room. It had cookers, ovens and a line of other staff waiting at the toasters. "This is the kitchen. This is where you will do most of the cleaning as you will clean cutlery and plates. You will also get your food provided from here."

"Yes, I understand. I was wondering where the kitchen was." I replied as we continued the tour. Luke showed me where the cleaning utensils were and where the other rooms were. Finally, he stopped at another corridor of rooms.

"You are not allowed down this corridor. This is the male worker's bedrooms. This means that your bedroom's corridor is on the woman's side. The men are not allowed on that side of the Manse." Luke mentioned.

"Thanks for clarifying," I replied as Luke led me to the cleaning cupboard. He handed me a mop and a bucket.

"I want you to mop the ladies' bedroom corridor floor. I will bring over a wet floor sign for you." Luke said as I started to walk towards my room. I placed the bucket on the floor and dipped the mop into the bucket. I squeezed the mop out and started to clean the floor. I saw a few footmarks on the floor. This will take a bit of time to do... I thought as Luke placed the wet floor sign against the wall. He walked away and started towards the kitchen. I carried on mopping the floor until I heard something.

I can see what will happen here. I can see it from a thousand miles away. Cadence said to me. What do you mean? Well, I can see that guy will be cruel to you. I know very well. I see...

I finished all the mopping in the hallway, watching the floor dry simultaneously to keep moving the wet floor sign. Now that all of that is finished, I'll use my powers to ensure you haven't missed a spot. I felt my hands move without control, and a shock as sparkles left my fingertips. The flashes touched the floor, and it started to look brighter. I began to feel light-headed after seeing the floor brighten. The floor started to get closer as I fell.

When I woke up, I was lying down on a hospital bed. I looked around and saw the Liberty crest on the wall. A white-coated man, who I thought was a doctor, was sitting at a desk nearby. I felt something was off. Lucky! I looked around to see Lucky sitting on the doctor's desk. The doctor looked around to see that I had woken up. He spotted me looking at Lucky and passed her to me. I grabbed her and hugged her tight. The doctor came down to my level.

"Hello. Do not be alarmed. I am the royal doctor here. I had been keeping an eye on your health whilst you were asleep. By the sounds of it, you fainted whilst you had been cleaning. Luke came about to see me three hours ago. He spotted you were on the floor. So, Luke quickly ran to get some help in getting you here. I helped Luke in carrying you here."

"I... I see..." I looked down. I looked up to see the door open, and Luke walked in. I was shaking like a leaf in fear. He looked at me, then looked at the doctor.

"Is she okay now?" Luke sounded frustrated. The doctor turned to glare at Luke.

"If that all you care about? The patient is quite distressed. I need to make sure the patient is in a stable mood." The doctor replied as he looked at me with a concerned expression. "Did the patient have any sustenance today?" Luke looked up and looked shocked.

"Oh shoot. I forgot to get her some food this morning. I apologise, doctor. I will get some toast post haste." Luke said as he ran out of the room. I looked at the doctor, and he sighed.

"He is learning to be a Lord High Steward, but it seems he forgets even the simplest things. I am so sorry about this. Anyway, I must ensure you feel better about doing the work set." So, the doctor said as I looked down. I was worried about how badly he would treat me. "So, I need to know a few things about you. Mind if I ask your name?"

"I-it's Leia Roberts," I replied.

" I shouldn't ask this, but I must know your age. It is for medical reasons."

"That's okay, doctor. I'm 17 years old." I knew I had to be honest with the doctor. I mentioned my date of birth so they could find information about my identity. The doctor went to the computer to input some information. I took a few deep breaths, cuddling Lucky, to feel calm. About 10 minutes later, the doctor came back looking a little shaken.

"I can confirm your identity. I have checked the database to see if a person is by your information. There is. I am worried because your parents may have made a missing person's report or something."

"I would have had a few messages if that were the case. I am still waiting to receive a message. I'm guessing Louis told my parents where I am."

"That's good, then. I was concerned about that." The doctor sighed in relief. The door opened, and Luke returned, holding a plate of jam on toast. I looked apprehensive about seeing Luke. "Ah, Luke. I have had to look up information on the patient. But, first, I needed to confirm her identity."

"I see. Thanks for that, doctor. I was hoping she wasn't going to lie to you." Luke replied.

"Can you let Leia eat her toast now? I'm pretty sure she needs it." The doctor said as Luke placed the plate on the table. Luke wheeled the table towards me. The sweet taste of the jam melted in my mouth. I savoured the taste of the food that was provided.

"You have done a great job of the corridor. I'll allow you to rest. Doctor?" Luke turned to look at the doctor. "How long should Leia stay here?"

"Leia will remain here for an hour to eat. I need to keep an eye. From my observations of when she has been awake, she seems to have anxiety. I may need to refer her to see someone." The doctor said as I finished eating the toast and pushed the table away.

"I see. Well, you have an hour's break. So, I will come and get her in an hour."

"Okay then, Luke. I will await you coming back." The doctor replied as Luke left the room. "Now, Leia. I am curious about one thing. How were you at the party last night?"

"Umm. It's a long story. I am best friends with Prince Edward and Louis. Louis and Prince Edward invited me to attend the party. They even chose my outfit."

"Ah, I see. So, you are friends with His Highness Prince Edward and his Steward Louis. How did you befriend them?"

"It's an amusing story. I ended up covering up Edward's real identity. Edward was known as William in school. As it turned out, Edward and Louis couldn't have tutors in Charles Castle as there were many meetings with the ministers, which would have disturbed their education when they were young. As a result, they had to go to public school. Some people wanted to try and befriend Edward, thinking it was the prince," I paused to catch my breath. "I said, 'lots of boys liked being Prince Edward, and William's eye colour is blue.' I made it sound like Edward was his body double. I didn't care about lying to the other kids as they didn't like me. I did find out on my own that it was Prince Edward, but Louis thanked me for helping him develop a story for his appearance."

"That sounds hilarious, not going to lie. Did he ever get questioned again after that?"

"He did, but they remembered what I said about Edward. So, they were left alone from being questioned ever again." I replied to the doctor. I felt a little better chatting with the doctor. "I am curious, but why do people abandon children?"

"Why do you ask that?"

"Well, I feel bad for Louis. He is so sweet, and I don't get why people would abandon him."

"There are many reasons why some children end up in those situations:

Firstly, they may not have had the money or resources to raise him. Secondly, they could have been in a dangerous position. Lastly, their parents could have passed away."

"I see. That explains a few things. Thanks."

"I'll wake you before Luke comes back." The doctor answered as I started to roll over and closed my eyes. After, what felt like an eternity, the doctor told me to wake up. I felt a bit refreshed after closing my eyes. Then, I heard the door open.

"Hey, Leia. It's time for you to get up. It is nearly time for dinner." Luke mentioned that I grabbed Lucky and started to leave the infirmary room. "I know you have eaten toast within the hour, but I don't want you fainting on me again. So, I do apologise about that. I should keep up with ensuring everyone working under me is provided with their basic needs."

"It's okay, Master Luke. I understand you're still learning." Luke looked at me. "Oh... um... The doctor mentioned that to me." I replied. We carried on walking to the kitchen.

"I was going to say where you heard that from. Now, I have some work I will want you to do after you have had your dinner. I will allow you to choose what you want for dinner." Luke mentioned as we arrived. On the metal counters, there were many plates. Some were empty. I could smell some cooked vegetables. I spotted an older-looking chef on the other side of the kitchen. The chef looked towards us and beckoned me over.

"Hello. Good evening. I don't think I've seen you before. I'm Barry, one of the chefs here. Today is Sunday's roast dinner. What would you like to eat?" Barry asked.

"I'll have some potatoes and vegetables, please," I replied to Barry as I spotted some Yorkshire puddings. "Oh, could I have a Yorkshire pudding too?

"No meat?" Barry asked.

"I... umm... I can't eat that. I have problems with it." I answered. Barry grabbed an empty plate and put some potatoes, vegetables and two Yorkshire puddings.

"Don't worry. Some of the staff don't want Yorkshire pudding." Barry said as he handed the plate to me. "Enjoy. There is a staff room for the lady workers over there," Barry pointed to a doorway. "The cutlery is in there too." I started to walk to the entrance. Once through the door, I saw a few ladies seated at the tables. I was looking around to see where I could sit. A lady with her brown hair in a bun waved to me.

"You can sit with me. You're Leia, right?" The lady asked as I sat down opposite her. I nodded. "I'm Sammie. I am working tonight for a party. Are you working tonight?"

"I don't know," I replied as I started to eat.

"I better let you eat, or Master Luke will tell me off for talking to someone eating," Sammie whispered back as I looked around and spotted Luke in the doorway. I cleared my throat.

"One question. Is Master Luke allowed here?" I questioned Sammie. Sammie nodded.

"Master Luke has to make sure no one is in trouble here and that we are eating our food," Sammie responded. Then, I heard footsteps getting closer towards me.

"Leia, I wanted to tell you what you're doing tonight. You will be helping serve the guests at the party. Understood?" I nodded whilst having my mouth full. "Sammie will take you to the casino, where the party will be held. I will be expecting you to be in good health for this." I finished my mouthful.

"Yes, Master Luke," I answered.
