Ch. 25: The Truth Behind the Gem
Nine months go by. You're ready to have your child anytime now. You went back to Aristotle for a gender reveal and it turns out you'll be having a girl. A girl and an owl. Part of you had wondered if your daughter would pick up on the same supernatural powers as her daddy. Or if she was going to pick up on his habits. Take after he does. That's your prediction of your child's personality.
Your baby bump is huge so you are most definitely ready anytime. Could be today. Could be tomorrow. Or ten minutes from now until she's born. You never know. But you do have a name picked out for her that you really like.
You're downstairs in the hallway right now and hanging up in front of you is your wedding dress. It's a smaller size from your current pregnant self, but that was okay. You and Barnaby are getting married after the child is here and you'll be back to your pre pregnant weight by then. Enough to fit in your dress, that is.
You hear this, "Three more months from now, my dear... and you're my wife.~" You smile and you turn to face Barnaby. He sighs and smiles as he looks at you. He says, "Any day now, my little girl will be here with us." You say, "I know. I can't wait, either. Can't believe she's already ready to be born."
He says, "Have a name picked out for her?" You nod. You smirk and you say, "Want to play a little game called guess the name?" He smiles and says, "Ooh, this sounds fun. Okay. Give me a hint." You say, "Okay. Starts with a 'C'."
He says, "Hmm. Is it... Cynthia?" You say, "Nope." He says, "Is it... Cruella?" You say, "Like Cruella DeVil? Nope again." He says, "Ooh! How about Charlotte?" You shake your head for no. He says, "Casey? Corrine? Carley? Cathy? Carrie? Christine? Celia? Cheryl?.." You shake your head for all of the above.
He says, "Oh, I give up." You say, "Hey. Chill. Here's another hint for you. Second letter is 'I'." He says, "Hmm..." He smiles and snaps his fingers saying, "Ah. I got it." You look at him. He says, "Oh hoo hoo hoo. I bet it's Cindy."
You smile and you say, "Bingo. That's the one." He says, "Ooh hoo hoo. And a lovely name." You say, "My thoughts exactly. I've always loved the name Cindy." He says, "Oh darling. This is going to be spectacular. Finally, a full family... where the mother actually loves her children." You say, "I want to be as good as I can be. Be there for her. Since my dad died, it's been me and my mom. Same with Billie and her mom."
He says, "Too bad I haven't killed them." You look at him and you say, "What do you mean?" He says, "If I did, they'd be ghost here like myself. Anyone that dies by my wings... becomes a ghostly guest here." You say, "Wait. That means Gina and that creepy pitbull guy are ghosts!"
He nods and says, "Mhm... But the creepy guy was NOT invited here for what he tried to do to you. Gina and Regina refuse to join." You gasp and you say, "Regina!" He says, "Don't you worry. They're around. Just ghosts. Anyone that dies by MY wings become spectators." You say, "So, that's how it works, huh?... Wait."
You notice the orange thing on his pink shirt and Barnaby says, "What is it, my dear?" You say, "Barnaby. Aristotle mentioned a gem. Is that... it? The one on your chest?" He says, "Oh that? It's the gem that can bring at least one dead being back to life." You say, "My god. So, that's what Billie was after?"
He says, "Oh, so that's why she tried to steal it last time, huh?" You say, "What is it about that gem that YOU need it?" He says, "It holds the source of my power. Without it... I'm nothing." You say, "I wasn't informed about that. So, you wouldn't be able to stretch your neck out or have the ability to bring those you've killed back as ghosts if you didn't have that gem?"
He says, "Not just that, but without its power... I'm just an invisible spirit unable to even feel anything emotionally. Just an orb or a white smoke figure." You sigh and you say, "My god. I didn't know about that part! I... I can't lose you, Barnaby. I... I can't." Tears form in your eyes and he notices this. You sniffle and you say, "I love you. We're having a child together. Ghost or not, you still have feelings, hopes and dreams Barnaby!"
He says, "Awe, my dear. Come to me." He holds a wing out. You get closer to him and he pulls you close. He wraps his wings around you and you wrap your own arms around him. You sob and you say, "How should I break this to Billie?"
He says, "Her daddy didn't die by my hands. He died from a fall when the goat herself was just a little baby. I know, now. I've overheard one of the citizens of Goatshire once." You pull away and you say, "Well, damn. That sucks. I'm hearing a lot of shit I've never heard from any of you, before. Did I arrive in Goatshire or Emoteshire?" Barnaby says, "That my dear... will remain a mystery."
You say, "Meh. Life itself is a mystery." He says, "You're still alive. You'd know more about that at the moment. And our daughter will too be alive. She may however hold an ability she gets from me."
You say, "I mean... I wouldn't doubt it. I'm no Aristotle, but even I can predict she's going to take after you besides the fact that she'll be an owl like you." He smiles and says, "Either way. She'll be a beautiful little girl." You say, "That I think we all know, babe."
He says, "Are you hungry?" You say, "Kind of. Yeah.... Also, there was something I should share with you. About my mom." He says, "Oh? And what would that be, huh?" You look at him and you say, "She looks younger than she should because she is. She was fifteen when she had me. So, my dad died young. At sixteen. So, mama's thirty-nine years old. Almost forty."
He says, "Oh... I see. Well, thanks for sharing that with me." You say, "I like to be honest with you, Barnaby. Let you know more about me." He says, "That's something else you and I have in common. My mother was very young as well when she had ME. Also, fifteen... Come with me, my dear. Let's feed you and little Cindy in there, huh?" You smile and you say, "Yeah." You both walk off.
