Ch. 18: A Glimpse of Barnaby's Past
The next morning, you're lying there on the bed, sleeping soundly. What happened last night between you and the ghost owl was even more intense than the last time. He showed a side you never knew about. It was like Fifty Shades of... Ghost. It thrilled you to no end and he knew it.
You begin to wake up and you sigh and smile. You say, "Barnaby. You animal.~" You giggle. You sit up and you look to see he's not on the bed nor in the room. You say, "Barnaby?" You shrug and you get up.
You look down at your wrists and you see a red ring around them both. You grin and you sing to yourself, "Love's got me looking so crazy right now." You giggle. You get dressed and you walk out of the room.
You walk down the hallway and you look around. You yell, "Barnaby!" You look another way and you yell, "Babe! Where are you? Barnababe! Yoo-hoo!" You sigh. You get to the stairs and you walk downstairs.
You get down there and you see a Barnaboo. You say, "Oh. Hey." He beckons you to follow him and you do. He leads you to a room you've never even been in. You look in and you look over at the Barnaboo. He nods and you walk inside the room. It's more library like. The Barnaboo floats over to a cabinet and he points at it, looking at you.
You walk over and you say, "Are you trying to tell me something?" He nods and says, "Open the very bottom drawer and see for yourself. It'll show you what Mr. Barnaby used to look like when he was still alive." You raise a brow and you look at the cabinet. You duck down and you open the bottom drawer.
You reach in and you feel around. You find a file and you get it out. You open it and you gasp. There he is. Barnaby when he was still a living being. He had more of a white and dark and light gray color to him. He had spectacles. His usual pink suit and bowtie he's currently seen wearing seemed to be more purple in color, in the photo.
You say, "Oh my god. That was him? Wow..." You put your hand on the picture and you say, "Even then, he was a handsome owl.~" You sigh and you smile. The Barnaboo giggles and says, "Ooh, you really do like him.~" You look at him.
He says, "There's something else you need to see if you close your eyes." You say, "Okay." You close your eyes. The Barnaboo puts his stubby little hand on your forehead and he says, "See for yourself... Barnaby's past." You say, "His past?" You suddenly get a vision.
(Flashback...)
It's the year 1921. Barnaby is a twenty-three-year-old man. He's one of the kindest gentlemen you could ever meet. He's got a young son who resembles him a little. James is the boy and he's five years old. So, Barnaby is a single father.
What happened was, Barnaby was dating a beautiful rabbit woman named Viola Bunsworth. They seemed to really hit it off and what she loved about him the most was that he was a great magician. And he was just that. A magician. He would show her a few tricks and she'd be impressed each time.
They ended up with a son in 1916, which is James. But when Viola went to shop one day, she never returned. This happened a week after their son was born. It's been six years since it's been just Barnaby and his son and they both accepted the fact that she's possibly dead. They made it just fine. And back during this moment, Barnaby wasn't his usual wacky self. He was... calmer.
Right now, Barnaby is sitting in the living room, in a chair. His son is sitting on the floor and looking up at him. Barnaby smiles and says, "My boy. Want to see what daddy can do?" James smiles and nods saying, "Yeah."
Barnaby shows his son a little magic trick, impressing the boy and making him giggle. He claps. Barnaby smiles and says, "Neat, huh?" James nods. Barnaby sighs and says, "If only your mother were here to see you right now." James says, "Father. What was she like?"
Barnaby says, "She was a very nice lady, son. She was sweet, lovely. You name it. She would've been a loving mother to you." James says, "Wow. And I never got to know her, huh?" Barnaby says, "I'm sure she's smiling down at you right now. Seeing what a handsome young lad you are."
James says, "Father. I'm getting hungry." Barnaby stands up and says, "Well, why don't I make you some dinner, huh?" James smiles and nods. He stands up and takes his dad's hand and they walk off into the kitchen.

Right outside the flashback, you smile and you say, "Awe." Your eyes are still closed. The Barnaboo having you see Barnaby's past life says, "His happiness didn't last long, though. He found out the truth about Viola."

A few months pass. It's barely 1922. Barnaby's walking down the street, holding James' hand. They head into a store and they do a little shopping. As they go around and James looks at the gadgets in interest, Barnaby looks around and he suddenly spots a familiar woman. He gasps as he realizes... it's Viola. After so long.
He approaches her and he says, "Viola?" The woman who is in fact, Viola hears this and she looks over to see a familiar owl man. She raises a brow and says, "Barnaby?" Barnaby sighs and smiles saying, "It's you. It's... really you. After five in a half years of your absence. You're here." She smiles. It seemed like things were going to be fine again... or were they?
Barnaby suddenly hears a male voice saying, "Hey, Viola! Who's this?" Barnaby sees a rottweiler man in a black suit and black hat walk close to Viola. Barnaby says, "Hello. Who are YOU?" Viola looks at Barnaby and her sweet smile suddenly turns into somewhat... a smirk. She chuckles.
She and the rottweiler guy look at each other and they both burst out laughing. Barnaby's smile fades. The rich man says, "So, this is the low-class magician you've mentioned, huh? And you were with him? YOU, an exquisite beauty with trash like him?"
She says, "Oh please. Not anymore." Barnaby is in shock and he says, "V-Viola. I don't understand. I thought you were dead. I..." She looks at her and snaps saying, "Oh, stick it up your worthless ass, Barnaby! I left for a reason. I found a rich and powerful man. I'm happy I did. I needed get away from YOU and that little brat I gave birth to! You couldn't even afford good presents for me! What about MY needs, huh?"
He says, "What about US? About our son?!" She says, "Please. I never wanted him. You and that other low-class brat keep away from me! Face it, Barnaby... Richard here is rich. You're not. He doesn't want to deal with a snot-nosed brat and neither do I. Tootaloo!" She and Richard laugh and he puts an arm around her. They walk out of there.
Barnaby is standing there in shock and disbelief. He found out Viola's alive, but has changed drastically. Turns out she possibly faked her death to get away from him and James and find a rich man to be with. He hears this, "Father?" He looks down at his son. James says, "Father? What's the matter?"
Barnaby puts his hand on his son's shoulder and he says, "Let's go home, son." James says, "Who was that lady yelling at you?" Barnaby tells him this, "A succubus waiting to suck the soul out of you one day. Let's get out of here." He heads out with his son.

Out of the flashback, your eyes are still closed, but you gasp and you put your hands over your mouth. The Barnaboo nods and says, "There's more. Watch and see for yourself, Miss. (Y/N)." He has you see another part of Barnaby's living days.
*************************************************
Another part shows James walking down the hallway in the house one night. He hears laughter followed by a hoot. He gets to his dad's bedroom door and says, "Father?" He hears laughter from his dad that he's never heard, before. James knocks and says, "Daddy!"
He opens the door and he looks into his dad's room. He looks over to see him. Something seems off about Barnaby, though. James says, "Daddy?" He can hear him chuckling and hooting a bit. Barnaby looks over to see James and he has a different expression. He's happy, but not in a calming way James knew. Barnaby looks more... twisted. He's got wide eyes and a smirk. He grins and says, "Son!" James walks in and says, "Father. Are you okay?"
Barnaby laughs and says, "Hoo hoo hoo hoo! Oh yes! I'm more than okay, my boy." He approaches his son and he ducks down. He tilts his head and has that wide grin. He says, "I'm spectacular. Don't you worry about a thing, my little one. Get plenty of rest and we'll have aaaall the fun we want tomorrow." He straightens his head back up and looks at his son.
James smiles and says, "Okay, father." Barnaby kisses him on the forehead and says, "Nighty night.~" He stands up. James says, "Goodnight, daddy." He walks out of the room, shutting the door on his way out. Barnaby turns around and he chuckles and grins.
He says, "All is just fine, my boy. Daddy just needs to take care of a couple of things soon. For my next act... I've got a surprise for Miss. Viola and her rich lover... FOR TURNING HER BACK ON ME AND OUR SON!!" He laughs maniacally with those hoots.
*********************************************************
It skips to the year 1923. This would be Barnaby's day of reckoning. This is where the tragedy begins. He's been up there a few times. The audience used to love him, but then they started to see him in a different light. After the whole magic act incident involving Viola and her rich lover Richard being tortured by Barnaby's magic, the audience and everyone else saw a mad man. A crazy owl.
Just half a year ago, Barnaby was put in a mental hospital and James was living with his grandparents. They let him out within a few months for 'good behavior.' But little were they aware... Barnaby wasn't fully cured.
This also drove him kind of mad with how the audience saw him. They saw a monster instead of a man. Today however would be different. He was going to quote on quote 'surprise' the audience. He told James now seven years old to wait behind the stage in case things got out of hand.
He's on stage and the audience is shocked and surprised to see him on stage. They whisper to each other some things, then they look up at Barnaby. Barnaby grins and says, "Ladies and gentlemen! I have returned! Hoo hoo hoo! And boy, do I have quite a show for all of you, tonight? This time..."
He pulls out a magic wand and he says, "I'm going to blow you all away with tonight's act!" He laughs and does the hoot. They decide they'll go with it and they nod. Little were they aware that Barnaby had a plan for their demise. So, by blow them away, he means literally. But little did HE know... it would backfire.
Barnaby grins and raises the wand. He points it at them and says, "Here it comes! Any moment! Aaaand... now!" But nothing happens. He says, "Huh?" He brings the magic wand down and he says, "What is wrong with this thing?" He points the end part towards his own face and he says, "Why isn't this blasted thing working? Work your magic y..."
Suddenly, the wand blows up and it knocks Barnaby down as well. It's like an explosion. The audience gasps. They hear a thud and the explosion disappears. But what they see horrifies them. Turns out, the act backfired and it ended up getting Barnaby killed. Half his face is already gone. The people scream and they get up and run out of there in panic.
As everyone runs out, Barnaby's lifeless body is lying there on the stage after the backfired magic act kills him. His son hears everything. The explosion, the people screaming, etc. He walks out on the stage to find his father lying on the stage floor. He says, "Daddy?"
(Flashback ends.)
You open your eyes and you gasp. You back away and you say, "Oh... Oh my god." You put your hand over your mouth and tears run down your face. You say, "Is that how it happened?" The Barnaboo says, "Afraid so, miss."
You say, "Oh, and he left a son behind. He was such a handsome little boy, too." The Barnaboo says, "The boy went to live with his grandparents after Barnaby was pronounced dead from that magic act that got him killed. He was twenty-five years old. James was seven. James himself is dead now. Old age. He died old while his father died young."
You sigh and you put your hands on your chest where your heart is located. You say, "So, that's why he's got that wacky and crazed side, huh? That's why he snapped when I left him that one night after finding out he killed for me. That's a reflection on his past with his son's mother leaving him for a rich man." The Barnaboo nods. You sigh and you stand up.
You say, "That explains everything. I'm going to find him." The Barnaboo says, "He'll be around. He's everywhere at times. He is a ghost and the head of this manor." You say, "Thank you for showing me that. I was wondering about this for quite some time." He nods. You head out of the library.
