Chapter 16
Victoria's POV
The next morning we arrived at Mr Lock's house early with the search warrant in hand. He had quite a shocked look on his face when we arrived on his door step claiming that we needed to search his house.
"This is nonsense. I am a witness to a crime and you are here searching my house, impossible," he was outraged but there was nothing he could do to stop us.
We searched every nook and cranny. The Green residence's extra key was found in one of the drawers. And we also found a file with news clippings of the missing boy and information on Mr Green that was very incriminating.
We arrested John Lock and brought him to the police station. Once he was in the interrogation we room we showed him all the evidence he didn't even try denying it.
"What happened?" I asked simply.
"14 years ago my sister Lidia's little boy Mark, was kidnapped. The police couldn't find anything. They searched for months until they presumed he was dead.
My sister killed herself 6 months later. I never gave up hope and then last year I got a promotion and moved into the neighbourhood. I met Weston when I moved in. He offered to help me. His eyes were so familiar. The day my nephew was taken Lidia and I went to the grocery store. I waited in the car with Mark and I saw that man eyeing Mark. I thought it was because it brought back memories of his own so and I watched him climb in a blue car.
That afternoon Mark was asleep in his chair and I helped my sister take the groceries in. When we got back the boy was gone and I saw the same blue car driving past. I knew it was that man, but I didn't get a good look at his face or his car and I failed my sister. She killed herself because she thought it was her fault he got taken, but it was mine. I had no proof and my memory was rusty. But when I saw that man the memories came back. I had an old friend who could use one of Mark's childhood photos to see what he would look like now, and he looked like Weston. I knew I found my proof. But it wasn't enough to convince the police.
I sent him notes but it didn't do anything. So I went to him that night to confront him. I took the key from Samuels office one day while I pretended to be in need of a lawyer. He never noticed. I went inside. No one was downstairs except Green, the TV was on and no one heard me come in. He was asleep and there was a gun on the coffee table. I just acted. I took a pillow put it infront of his head and shot him. The anger I felt for years just took over. And he was gone." He explained. He didn't look like he regretted anything.
John Lock was taken into custody and Tim and I went to Mrs Green and Weston to explain what happened.
Mrs Green was surprised to see us when she opened the door.
"Sorry to bother you, but we caught the man that murdered your husband," Tim told her.
"I thought Samuels murdered him?" She asked perplexed.
"It's a long story, mind if we come in and explain?" I asked. She invited us in and we took a seat in the lounge. We asked her if Weston could also be present before we told her the truth. When Weston arrived, Tim and I narrated the events that led to Mr Green's death. Telling everything John Lock told us.
"So Weston wasn't officially adopted?" Mrs Green said later when we all were gathered in their lounge.
"I was kidnapped?" Weston said with shock written over his features. His whole world was ripped from under his feet.
"You never knew about this Mrs Green?" I asked.
"No, we were supposed to get our adopted son that day. He drove 6 hours straight to go fetch him. And he came in with this boy and I thought he was the one we adopted. We've never met the boy, the one we were meant to adopt before, they were afraid of upsetting him. So I thought this was him. If I've known my husband stole another woman's child...I would have returned him...I didn't know," she started to sob and Weston wrapped his arms around her.
"Thank you for telling us," Weston answered and I knew that there was still a long way to go. I remember the photos I've seen with him and Mr Green. How your world would be shattered if you find out that the man you grew up looking up to was actually the one that stole you from your real family.
We left the two of them alone and headed to my car. At the police station I finished my report. We let Mr Samuels go and explained everything to him. Before he left he pulled me aside.
"I heard the other detective say that if it wasn't for your outstanding police work and poking and probing that I might not have been a free man, so thank you Detective Wills," he said as he hold out his hand for me to shake. I shook it.
"You're a fine, detective," he flashed me a smile.
"I was taught by the best," I said and Mr Samuels left. Maybe he and Alice will get together afterall.
While I was packing away my paperwork Tim poked me on the shoulder.
"I owe you an apology. You told me you didn't feel comfortable with putting Mr Samuels away as the murderer and I should've believed you," he said.
"Don't worry about it," I told him.
"Next time, I'll trust your gut," he said and I bid him goodnight.
When I walked outside I found Alec waiting for me. My heart dropped in disappointment because it wasn't Jay, but atleast my friend was here for me.
"Hey," he greeted.
"Hey."
"I know you and Jay used to have a case close celebration, but I thought maybe I could buy you a coffee. I can never replace Jaydan, but I will be here for you when you need me," he said earnestly.
"I don't think Jay can ever be replaced. But for now I'll take my best friend and a cup of coffee," I linked my arms through Alec's as we walked to a coffee shop down the street. Not the one Jay and I used to frequent because I wasn't ready to face that place yet.
I knew that it was going to take a long time before I will be ready to face anything that reminds me of Jaydan without crying. But I knew the only medicine for the pain I was experiencing was time.
Time heals all wounds.
I could only hope that time will help repair the big junk that was ripped from my being...
Hey guys!
So what did you think about the murder?
And Jaydan's death?
Don't worry this is not the last chapter, there is still two to go and an epilogue.
Please remember to vote and comment.
Happy reading
