°chapter six
Me and Mike stand outside Jessica's office. No one was speaking and we didn't even look at each other.
I know I said that I was going to convince Jessica to get this case to be a pro-bono. I didn't exactly say it was going to be easy... Or that because of the fact that I was pregnant, my anxieties were making my morning sickness worse. Although at this point it's not even morning sickness, it's 'all-dang-day' sickness. Whilst I stood outside Jessica's office, all I could think about was my pregnancy and still on how the hell I was going to tell Harvey. No, wait... I've got to just get through to my doctor's appointment, and then I can tell him. I must hold onto that at least. But, for now, I have a mission. It's also going to be a distraction. Because, hell, I needed one right now.
"Uh, Amelia?" I snap out of my train of thought and turn my head to look at Mike.
"Sorry, I just... need a moment." I look back towards Jessica's office and Mike nods lightly.
"Sure." A few moments pass and I ran through every way this conversation could go. Then I feel Mike's breath, lightly tickle my ear. "Kinda wanted to get a head on this case today-" I exhale deeply and walk towards Jessica's office door, opening it. Mike words trail off and he follows me, entering after me. The door closes behind us both. I make my way towards Jessica, who was sat at her desk with a stack of papers and a pen in hand.
"Amelia..." Jessica rests the pen onto her desk. "What brings you-" She spots Mike as he stands beside me. "-both into my office? Did you and Mike have a look at the pile of cases I gave you? I assume you have an update."
"Jessica... In fact we did look at the files and Mike and I have chosen who we'd wish to continue wish. We-" I pause, knowing I didn't exactly want Mike to have this on his head to, considering my position in the firm. "I, have a little proposition for you." I see Jessica pause as leans back into her chair and folds her arms.
"Proceed."
"I've decided to make this case a pro-bono." Jessica takes a deep breathe, but I interrupt her. "I know what you're thinking." But Jessica butts in too.
"Do you? Amelia, how could you think we could take this case pro-bono? It's too big of a case. And I have to protect this firm, you now know that more than anything." Jessica says, her voice raised. Licking my lips, I answer her.
"I know you think that this can be bad for the firm or that I'm being reckless after everything I've been through. But, I promise I'm not and that it won't be." Jessica stands up and walks past us, sitting onto the sofa looking out into the corridor. Me and Mike are still standing but we still face Jessica.
"So... If you know those things, then why are you bringing this to me and challenging me to make this something I possibly cannot?" I pluck a folder from Mike and pass it to Jessica, sitting down.
"Because I know what it's like to have spoke but not been listened to." Jessica looks and me and opens the folder. I see her eyes skim through the pages. "This couple have been through the ringer, and I mean it. They tried to get through this, and have tried to be heard. And I feel like we can be the people to actually do something for them." As soon as I finish my sentence, I startle, only to hear a voice behind me that wasn't Mike's.
"Mike, Amy, Jessica." I look back with a smile as I knew who it was. It was Harvey. He smiles back at me lightly. "What's going on in here?" Harvey walks round and sits next to me, and I feel him right arm lightly touch my back. I began to feel warmth.
"Amelia wants to take a case pro-bono." Jessica hands him the folder. Me and Harvey both turn to look at each other. He frowns a little, but I look deeply into his eyes, wanting him to know that this was the right way to do this. Harvey's frown immediately disappears and he faces Jessica.
"I'm sure that Amy has thought this through. And I know Mike wouldn't back her up, unless he really had to." He looks over to Mike, who walks forward and speaks.
"Yeah. She's right. It's the right thing to do." We all look back at Jessica.
"I'll allow it... Only if you all sacrifice your paycheque to this case." The room falls quiet for a second. "Otherwise, I can't let this happen." I begin nodding, standing up.
"I'll do it. It's worth it." Harvey also stands up with me.
"I'll dedicate my money and my time on whatever they both need. In fact, I'll over see this Jessica, so you don't need to get involved. You've got Louis backing you too Jessica." He chuckles.
I place one hand behind me and Harvey, out of view, grabs my hand and gives it a light, reassuring squeeze. We all look at Mike, who is looking at the floor. Suddenly, I knew Mike felt the pressure of our stares and he looks up dazzled and scrambling his words.
"Oh.. I-I-I, I will give my time to this case... But I'm still an associate so maybe not my paycheque-" Harvey clears his throat loudly and on purpose and I turn away to stifle my laugh. I even catch Jessica playing with a smile on her lips. "Alright, I'll give some of paycheque. Sorry." We look back to Jessica as we wait for her to say something.
"Okay... I'll allow it." We all make headway to the door, Mike already outside. Harvey opens the door to allow me to step out first. "But, Amelia, Jessica." Pausing, we look back at her. "This is on you both. So don't let this firm down and don't let the Parkers down."
Acknowledging Jessica, both me and Harvey follow Mike outside and begin walking towards my office. Harvey stands between me and Mike.
"That was awesome!" Mike lifts his hands up for a high-five.
"Don't you know that we don't do this public?" Harvey remarks, holding onto my right hand with his left. Mike drops his hand beside himself.
"Oh come on Harvey, that was awesome. But... Mike... maybe next time don't try not to support the conversation. Because, although that was all awesome, you messed up." Harvey chuckles.
"Ha, Mike, you ready to go back into the little boys room?"
"Heeeey, that's not fair Harvey, seriously?"
"Oh, no, you had this coming Mike..." I turn into my office, Harvey and Mike following into it behind me. He scoffs and I glare at him for a moment, Mike going quiet again. "I need you to help me run this too Mike, so no more messing up... I need you to ask Rachel to help us too. Tell her that I'd greatly appreciate it, because I know she's the best paralegal here."
"On it." Mike walks away and Harvey closes the door, then places the case folder onto my desk.
"What are you doing?" I say with a smile, Harvey walking towards me and planting his hands around my waist.
"You know, what you did in there was kinda sexy." I wrap my around around his neck.
"Oh really?" He begins to pepper kisses to my neck and I bite my lip. "I should do things like that more often then..."
"You really..." He kisses my lips. "...should..." Harvey kisses me again, but like he means it, and I casually slip my tongue into his mouth. After he groans, Harvey speaks. "Amy... you really shouldn't do that."
"Why not?" I do it again, but slowly. Harvey puts his lips to my ear, his voice a whisper.
"Because I could do some bad things at this office that would get be arrested for public indecency..." We rest our foreheads onto each other.
"I'd like to see you try..." I pull away from him and his hands, not wanting to, leave my waist. I sit in front of my desk. "So... can you get Donna's help for this?" I grin widely and Harvey laughs. He opens his mouth to speak, but another voice speaks first.
"Of course I'm helping you!" Me and Harvey turn to look at my phone and notice the speakerphone is on.
"Donna? How-"
"-long have I been listening? Since Jessica's office." Harvey and I smile at each other.
I expected nothing less of Donna. "Well, if we're talking about Harvey, a while, but about this case... I mean since you all were with Jessica."
"Thank you Donna... seriously." I say.
"You're welcome! Oh, Harvey, I've got a client on the phone, and I'm trying to stall him but he really wants to talk to you." Harvey gets up, making his way to the right of me as I still sit.
"Be there in a second!"
"Okay! Bye guys!" Hearing a light click, the call ends and Harvey leans down slowly and torturously kissing me. I groan and with a whisper, moan his name into his mouth.
"Harvey..." We separate.
"See you later. I gotta go deal with this client." With a simper, he leaves my office, his scent slowly disappearing. In those moment, my worries disappeared. As they always do when I'm with Harvey.
Then, with a deep breathe, I got to work. I stayed in my office for most of the day, delegating and calling the right people. Mike and Rachel had their hands full on digging things about the warehouse. Donna was trying to figure out who the Parkers are and Harvey told me he's trying to finish off with some clients before meeting up with me at home. He popped in every now and then with a few little funny comments to keep my spirits up. It's another thing I love about him...
And after a long day at work and communicating with everyone, I finally had a chance to come home.
Home. It felt a little weird to have somewhere to call home and not be scared about the skeletons in my closet. Even though, my mother was essentially one of my skeletons and I really didn't have anything to say to her. Still. And yes, she left me some messages, which I didn't read.
As soon as I walked through the door to Harvey's... actually I guess it's our apartment now, since I've been with him for a little while - I place a box of files onto the floor next to the kitchen counter, where Harvey's stools are, my New York Pizza sitting on top. My bag goes next to the box and I drape my coat over it. I go to grab myself a wine glass, picking up a bourbon bottle and start to pour. I hear the liquid get close to the rim. But I stop suddenly.
"Shit." I remember that I can't. I can't make any mistake because I want to do everything by the book. And make sure I don't lose it again. I just can't...
Quickly, I twist the cap back on and open the fridge. I pluck out a carton of orange juice, already open, and pour it into my glass. I filled it right up. Extra vitamins right?
I then drink some and place the carton onto the counter, where I place my stack of files. Already, I felt sick, because I hadn't drunk quite as often and now I had to down it more.
And then, I begin looking. I decided to dig into the files from the warehouse too, but I wanted to look at particular dates of the warehouse. By dates, I mean ever since it was built. It was lucky that the warehouse let me access this stuff. Shame it was all in dang paper form.
A few slices of pizza and three glasses of juice later, I hear the door open and close. A smile played on my lips. I knew it was him.
"Well, hello." Harvey unbuttons his suit jacket, draping it on the single sofa's armrest.
"Hi..." I was so focussed, with a highlighter in one hand and a pen in the other. I read each sheet word for word. After a few moments, I feel Harvey's hands settle onto my waist and he kisses my cheek.
"How's it all going?" I finish reading the page in front of me and spin round to face him, wrapping my hands around his neck. His scent wafts over me. It was warm and comforting.
"Better... now that you're here." I smile at him and he leans towards me.
"You need a break?" He asks, his lips close to my ear. "Do you need..." His lips move down to my neck, teasing my skin. "...a break?" I groan.
I knew exactly what he meant.
I crash my lips onto his and I open my mouth, his tongue giving me a warm welcome. I moan, my hands snaking into his hair. I wrap my legs around his waist and his hoists me up onto him, carrying me into the bedroom. Gently, he lays my onto the bed as he towers over me. His lips move from my lips to my neck and keeps going lower. He quickly undresses and I also do the same, our clothes tossed to the floor. We were both bare in front of each other, only wearing our undergarments. He crawls back onto me, his mouth planting kisses onto my inner thighs, his fingers brush my underwear. My toes curl and I could feel myself about to give way.
Right now, I was horny as hell. Harvey was the only man I'd want to take me over the edge.
"Stop..." I say, Harvey looking up at me. "I... I need to feel you..." Out of breath, I whisper. Harvey sits on top of me and pulls the a folded blanket at the end of the bed, over us. He kisses me again and we break for a moment.
Before lowers his boxes, I speak again. "I... I love-"
"I love you too Amy..." He says, smiling. His fingers hooking his boxers.
But, my mind goes elsewhere as I worry about the tiny human inside of me.
"Wait!" I shout, Harvey frowning.
"Hey..." He says softly. "Do you want me to stop? It's okay..."
"I... I have to-" I pause for a moment, and my anxiety told me, I should just tell him.
"Yeah?" His hand moves to my face, caressing my cheek.
"I-" All of a sudden, a wave of sickness washes over me and I push Harvey to my side, quickly scrambling out of bed. I make a break for the bathroom, to the toilet. I retch, puking. I flush the toilet and wash my hands. Making my way back to the bed, I lie back down.
"You okay?" I sigh.
"Yeah..."
"You should really get your stomach checked." I turn to my side, facing away from Harvey, tears welling in my eyes.
"Yeah... I'm going soon." He hugs me from behind, planting a kiss onto my shoulder. "Don't worry..." I hold in my tears and close my eyes, regretting that I couldn't tell him. I couldn't stop thinking. My mind couldn't stop whirring.
I hope he carries on loving me, until I tell him after my appointment.
My eyes begin to close, and we both drift off to sleep.
