SEVENTEEN

The first flowers of the season had begun blooming around the grounds of Hogwarts. Peaceful calmness wavered through the almost empty common room as most students had used their break to sit outside and enjoy the warming weather.
The change in both temperature and scenery brought the realization of how near the end of sixth year was. The conversation from dinner seemed to seep back into her thoughts and brought worry of the future to come. She felt like each of her seconds was a grain of sand held in an hour glass and they were falling, falling, falling ever so quickly. Her eyes closed only for a moment to blink and it seemed as if thousands of those grains had fallen without her notice.
The sound of someone clearing their throat and the feeling of a hand tapping on her sock covered foot simultaneously snapped her out of these thoughts and back to the notecards held in her hands.
"You zoned out on me for a second," James laughed from across the couch where he too sat behind a large pile of books that were placed at random on his lap.
"Sorry," Freya shook her head, flipping through the pile of neatly written facts, "Just thinking."
He let out a series of fake coughs before muttering, "About Remus."
Little did he know that Freya had once again tuned the sounds around her out of her mind and instead was making a rather successful attempt to focus on the sentences that scrawled onto the parchment. Love potions, liquid luck, mandrake, different types of mushrooms — all things she would need to know for the test tomorrow in Potions.
However, she did hear James speak, she just did not pay particular interest to whatever it was that he was saying. So with the hopes of temporarily shutting him up for a few moments, she hummed and nodded her head slightly.
As her face was downcast, she missed the priceless reaction that spread across his features. James jumped quickly to his feet from the couch, glasses sliding slightly down his nose as he ran his fingers through his messy hair with excitement. "I knew it! I bloody well knew it!"
Her nose crinkled as she stared up in confusion at the outburst, "Well, I'm happy you knew that," she paused, looking at the notes he had been glancing at that now sat abandoned on the cushion, "Laverne de Montmorency invented the love potion but there's no need to yell —"
"No, I knew that there was something going on between you and Remus! I knew it! Wait till I tell Padfoot," James made a sudden dash towards the door, not expecting Freya's next desperate move. She slung herself onto his back, tackling him to the floor with a thump followed by a loud moan of discomfort.
"Oh stop being so pitiful, you get worse than that during Quidditch practice," Freya huffed, standing over him with her arms crossed. Her hair had fallen down in small blonde curls around her pale blue eyes, framing her face.
"Fine, fine," James jumped to his feet, dramatically examining his body for the slightest injury. He pushed his sleeve up his elbow, which sure enough, sported the tiniest of scrapes.
"Anyways, I fulfilled my part of the plan, I wonder how Padfoot is doing..."
She raised an eyebrow in suspicion, silently wondering if this was an attempt to anger her or if James and Sirius really had planned another ignorant trick.
"And what plan are you talking about?"
"Dunno," James spoke stubbornly, using his wand to heal the small cut. She clenched her firsts in frustration. "But I suppose if you really want to know, Sirius did say something about that bench you always sit on."
With a glare and a light punch on the shoulder for good measure, Freya exited the common room, hoping all the way that they hadn't strategically done anything irrational. She headed down the same flights of stairs as always, but slipped on the third to the last step and into the thankfully uncrowded corridor.
Perhaps this was karma for hurting, although she knew she truly hadn't, James. Her palms lay flat on the cold tile as she pushed herself up to her feet, rubbing the left side of her hip that had harshly made contact with the floor. It was at that moment that her eyes connected with the worn potions book that had caused her to fall.
Freya picked the book up with the mindset of finding a name inside to see who had been the cause of the fall, but she was surprised to find the small, and somewhat messy scrawl of words to say 'This Book Is The Property Of The Half-Blood Prince.'
She peered around the corner in hopes of seeing the true owner, but the only thing that met her gaze was the large window overlooking the castle grounds that reminded her of nothing than what James had said. Not wanting to carry the book around with her, Freya shoved it to the side of the staircase thoughtfully so no one else would trip over it. The only assumption she could come up with was that Peeves had nicked it from a student and placed it there in hopes of seeing someone fall.
Freya was pleasantly surprised at the weather and happy that she hadn't grabbed her jacket on the way out because there was no need for it. Curiosity filled her as she noticed Sirius was nowhere in sight, but Remus sat on the bench alone.
"Remus!" She called, walking closer towards him and smiling as he met her summon with a wave.
"Hi," he said as she walked closer, twirling a long piece of grass in between his fingers as if contemplating something.
"Hey yourself. Where's Sirius? James said something about —"
"Yeah, they had a stupid plan. Just wanted to know what was going on between us," he replied, scuffing his foot on the ground.
She nodded, "Should've seen that one coming."
He looked down at his shoes before clearing his throat and staring back at her. She studied him, noticing the slight pink his ears had begun to turn and the happy warmth that his brown eyes held. His hands begun to turn the random strand of grass quicker, proving to her that there was no doubt he was nervous.
"But about that, you see . . . uh," he coughed, rubbing the back of his neck as the right side of his mouth turned up into an awkward half-smile.
Freya refrained a snort, "Yes?"
"What is going on between us?" He blurted the question before his mouth swallowed in whole and forever.
Freya glanced at the blades of grass beneath her legs thoughtfully. She knew to be honest.
"I only worry for our friendship."
"That's valid," Remus replied. He had had the same fears too all those years of stopping himself from confessing his feelings. He had held the secrets of his feelings within, as if they were sins - unconfessed.
Silence passed between the two.
"I just . . . Freya, I don't know how to say this without sounding like one of those cliche muggle movies your parents force you to watch that you hate, but I'm completely enthralled by you," Remus paused, unable to form the words in his mind as Freya captivated them all. There was so much he wanted to say to her at the moment, so many words fell into his brain like the tide crashing over the sand on a beach, only to be swept away and replaced with a new wave that held even more words.
Shakespeare once said that the eyes are the window to the soul, and at that moment his words could not have been more true. Her blue eyes never left his coffee colored ones through his whole confession, or during his quiet inward debate after. Maybe this was why she somehow understood his silence. If the eyes truly were the window to the soul, Freya had once again peered into his beautiful one.
Suddenly her lips were on his, messily, sloppily, and perfectly. Neither had finished the thought, but they understood each other in a manner that could not be better. In the dark time that the Wizarding World would soon be captured in, they were each other's light. They had always been. From the time he could only dream of it and she was too blind to see, to now. Freya and Remus, Remus and Freya.
