Chapter 9: To the Mountains With the Kits

I stared. "What?" Are you kidding? I just got back! What about my kits?"

"Let me explain. I had this dream where I saw Firestar. He was on the cliff where Smokepaw died."

I inwardly shuddered. Smokepaw was a ShadowClan apprentice who had fallen from right where Firestar was standing in her dream.

"Anyways, he said, 'Leafpool, you and your sister must go with the right guides to the cats who started it.' And then, he being the good old father he is, said, literally, 'Hint hint, the mountains.' So I said, 'Dad, wait!' But no, he goes, follow your heart, Leafpool.' and then leaves. Seriously, what does that mean?'"

But I had a sneaking suspicion that I knew just what it meant.

Hollyleaf had told me that at the Moonstone. All she said was, "Follow your heart, Squirrrelstar." And then, bam! just like that I was supposed to know what it meant. But I didn't, and I wish I did. I sighed. "Fine. I'll go. But we're waiting a moon, and I'm bringing my kits with me."

"Fine, but if one or more joins StarClan, it's not my fault!" she hissed, and I could suddenly feel waves of anger coming from her. Wow. She must be really upset about this. "By then, my kits will be strong and healthy. And leaf-bare is moons away!"

Leafpool shrugged her shoulders in defeat. She murmured something that I didn't catch, and stalked off to the medicine den.

** Six moons later**

Leafpool's POV

Squirrelstar is so mouse-brained, thinking that her kits will survive. Theey'll make it three paw-steps out of camp! She's thinking of her, not them! I saw Cougarkit and Leopardkit. Leopardkit knows so much about medicine cats, yet she wants to be a warrior.

"I'll still help you with stuff," she had mewed. "I just really want to be a warrior." Rosekit was a different story. She was set on becoming the best medicine cat ThunderClan has seen, ever. I love her ignorance. She would have to be better than Spottedleaf, Yellowfang, myself (I think I'm awesome, okay?), and almost every other medicine cat in Clan history. Squirrelstar told the Clan that she and I and her kits (all except for Rosekit, she's "training" with Jayfeather) that we are going away. Brambleclaw is devastated. I assured him that with a medicine cat here, they are bound to be safe. I gave everyone coming traveling herbs, and we were about to set off when Brambleclaw called us back.

"Wait!" he yowled.

Squirrelstar's POV

"Wait!" he had screeched. "I would like you to make a ceremony. If one of them goes to join StarClan, I want them to be an apprentice when they go," he hissed miserably.

"Sparkkit, Shadowkit, Sunkit, and Rosekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you recieve your warrior name, you, Sparkkit, will be known as Sparkpaw. Your mentor will be Berrynose. I hope he will pass down all he knows to you." Berrynose looked like he would explode with pride. "Shadowkit, you will be known as Shadowpaw. Your mentor will be Birchfall. I hope he will pass down everything he knows to you." Birchfall gave his chest fur a few quick licks, then went to touch noses with his apprentice. "Sunkit, you will be called Sunpaw. Cloudtail will mentor you." The pure white tom looked up in surprise. "And last but not least, Rosekit. You are not coming with us but it wouldn't be fair for you to still be a kit while your littermates are apprentices! Rosekit, is it your wish to take on the burdens of being a medicine cat?" She nodded. "Rosekit, you will be named Rosepaw. Jayfeather will be your mentor." we then bid our good-byes and heard many "may StarClan light your path"s. And yes, this is correct grammar. Cuz they got the quote, and then you add an 's' at the end. :)

****A quarter moon later****

Sparkpaw POV:

As we trekked to the mountains, I was sure that I would join StarClan. My paws ached and I was sure that Squirrelstar was trying to kill us. We had passed these huge wierd things with circular claws and huge, hairy tails. Squirrelstar called them horses. She told us they are harmless, unless you are slow and they step on you. We saw eagles and hawks and bears, but no cats. If it weren't for Sunpaw and Shadowpaw, I think I would have died of boredom. During the long journey, I caught two mice, a shrew, three thrushes, and a snow hare. Sunpaw and Shadowpaw caught about the same amount as I did. I was almost willing to go find a hawk to entertain myself when I heard a faint mew. "Help! Someone, help!"

Jayfeather POV:

I suddenly heard a "Help!" from an unknown cat. Whoever they were, I wanted to help them. The group of ThunderClan cats followed my lead. I may not be able to see, but I can read minds very well. We soon "saw" the cat. It was a pretty white and tan she cat who looked like she hadn't been fed in days. She was stuck in a crack in a patch of ice...This reminded me of Half-Moon, who was my first love when I was a Tribe cat called Jay's Wing. She had gotten stuck in a crack in a rock...okay, think, Jayfeather, think! Ok then...Squirrelstar quietly padded up to the dying she-cat. "It'll be okay, we'll get you out of here," she mewed calmly. "Leafpool! Come get me some wet moss from the north side of that tree," she yowled. I knew there wouldn't be enough time. "Just get some mud! That's slippery!" A few heartbeats later, she returned with some mud and a few leaves. "Hurry!" The she-cat gasped. "I won't live much longer!"
