Stonekit raced through the trees, not daring to look back at the large amber eyes. His heart pounded in his chest as he ran. Please, StarClan, let Icekit and Lightkit get away. He wasn't sure if the stars would be able to hear his silent prayer. The sun didn't show through the trees as he ran. His legs aching with the cold, he wished he could rest, but he didn't dare stop.
Finally, panting, Stonekit came to a halt. He glanced around, hoping that no amber eyes would show in the gloom of the forest. It was darker in this section of the woods than the rest, with the trees less bunched together. Sniffing the air, Stonekit felt a wave of relief wash over him. He couldn't smell any dog scent. But the air also had a sappy scent. Stonekit wrinkled his nose as another scent washed over him. He struggled to figure out what it was. It smelled like cat scent, but stranger, and more... disgusting.
Strange, green, thin sticks were scattered on the bare earth like leaves. Glancing up, Stonekit realized that none of the trees were oaks or beeches. Instead, sticking out from the branches were the green sticks. Stonekit placed a paw cautiously over the end of a stick. It poked at his pad like a small thorn. Suddenly, Stonekit remembered something Sandstorm had told him about. There was a Clan in the forest that lived under the pines, which were strange trees with green, pointy sticks as leaves.
ShadowClan! I'm in ShadowClan territory! The realization struck Stonekit like a claw slashing at his face. They could be lurking anywhere, in this undergrowth. And what about his littermates? Did the dog catch them? Icekit said they were going to fight ShadowClan, at the border.
A plan formed in Stonekit's mind. He backed up, sniffing the air, until the pines thinned, and the scent changed to what Stonekit usually smelled in camp. Paw steps thrummed the earth, and Stonekit slid carefully into a bush.
He glanced around. Strange cats were parading out of the pines. Other, more recognizable, cats were coming out of ThunderClan territory. The two groups of cats paused, staring at each other for a moment. Stonekit strained to try to hear what the leaders were saying, but it was too quiet. The only thing he knew was that both groups were furious.
Then, as if on signal, the cats attacked.
