8. OUCH
Eva paced around the courtyard, nervously biting on her lip while her mind wandered to the darkest reasons possible for Terrell's delayed arrival to their usual – and only – meeting spot. She thought that Ross had somehow figured out something was going on between the two, and had taken matters into his latex clad hands. Thinking about Terrell being hurt only caused her to panic even more, biting nervously on her lower lip to the point where she'd began peeling the fresh skin off.
Fortunately, the familiar walking pattern she'd memorized was beginning to sound audible from a distance, coming closer with each step. As soon as the man turned the corner, Eva jumped up, embracing him tightly.
"Oh God, I thought something happened to you." She shut her eyes in relief, sighing at his safe arrival.
Terrell gave out an airy chuckle, shaking his head at her silly, paranoid reaction. He placed a pair of gentle hands on her shoulder, pulling her away from him as he looked her in the eyes.
"Trust me – he won't ever find out, we're too clever for that fucker." He gave her a reassuring smile, hoping she'd understood, to which she nodded.
"OK, so what did you bring me here to talk about? You said it was important." Eva went over to the edge of the fountain's lower tier, sitting down as she took out a pack of cigarettes from her coat pocket, lighting it with a match as the stick rested between her lips.
"I think we should escape." Terrell bluntly, and confidently stated, wanting Eva to question how so he would explain the details he'd been scheming for the past week since they last saw each other in her bedroom.
She furrowed her brows, exhaling the smoke as she held the cigarette between her fingers.
"Escape?" She repeated. "And how exactly do you think we're going to escape?" Her tone sounded discouraging, though she too longed to get out of the level of purgatory she considered herself to be in as soon as she could – knowing nobody actually leaves Springwater.
"Right – so from my knowledge, the members of the Board of Directors and the CIA usually make trips to and from here – so there would obviously have to be...some kind of boat we could use to get out. The keys are probably in Ross' custody but we'll find a way around that."
The woman nodded at this information, making sure to direct her full attention towards his words, registering them in. She toyed with the ends of her short bob nervously while taking usual drags from her cigarette in the other.
"So, if we leave from here – it will take about..." He looked down, silently calculating the time between Springwater and the closest city from it. "Four days to reach Kahaluu."
"OK, so where do we go from there?" She inquired, her brows knitting beneath her bangs.
"There's this...guy I know on Ahaolelo road, he can help us. By the time we have our new identities then..."
"We go our own ways..." Eva mumbled, too invested in her thoughts of the two eventually parting ways, not realizing she'd spoken her thoughts out loud.
"Why?" He looked up at her, clearly seeing how scared she appeared at the idea. "Who says we have to leave one another? We can just live in Hawaii with our new identities." Terrell shrugged. "Not sure about the others, but-"
"Others?" She spoke, tilting her head in confusion.
"Yeah, we're saving the others as well, right?"
"Trust me when I say this – those 'others' aren't mentally fit to be out there in the world. I'm with you when it comes to Ross being a dick, but the rest of them should be thankful the crazies are locked up in here."
"Eva, we can't just leave them. I'm talking about people like you – people who don't even know why they're here in the first place. Plus, the other African Americans that are locked away waiting to be Ross' next Guinea pig. They surely don't belong here."
"Maybe they're here for a reason? Like, they did something bad and the prison system sent them over." Eva suggested.
Terrell was taken aback by her bold statement, assuming the other 'test subjects' had done something wrong to be put in here.
"Listen, I don't know what he's been shoving down your throat, but those patients, do not deserve to be here. Take it from me, when I walk into his office – he's got Nazi memorabilia plastered across his office walls. The difference is, I take note of that, meanwhile you're just there with your head down his pants."
"OK, just because I'm not always pulling out the race card doesn't mean I don't notice it. My fucking grandmother was a Holocaust survivor so don't come to me with your whole 'Eva, I'm too fucking weak from all the drugs he's been putting in me to fight this battle on my own.' bullshit!" She mimicked his voice, toning it down to sound like a little, helpless kid – something she believed he was.
His nostrils flared at the pathetic jab Eva took, biting in on his inner cheek to avoid saying anything further. It was clear that Terrell felt not only hurt by her toxic words, but offended that she was somehow manipulating the situation to fit the victim card to her liking.
"You know maybe if you had this much motivation when it came to your sister insisting on that sleepover – maybe things would be a whole lot different."
He stood there, frozen. Although the statement tore him up on the inside, he wasn't over Kitty's death, causing him to accept what she said as the truth. He'd woken up every day after the murders blaming himself for what had happened – and Eva was right, if he'd had the exact same attitude towards his little sister demanding the sleepover, she and her friends could have been saved.
The words rung in his head repeatedly like a torturous interrogation song – waiting for the prisoner to crack and confess, however this time, it didn't drive Terrell insane, he'd simply accepted his fault in her death.
"You're right." Was all he could utter in the moment, looking downwards towards the ground, a tear escaping his eye. Before Eva could take notice of his emotions, he'd wiped it away – looking at her with the most relaxed face he could. "My break's up – we could talk about this later."
"Sure." The woman smiled at him, finally diverting her attention away from the roses she'd been examining whilst Terrell wept. "I love you." She smiled.
"I love you way more." He stated, walking over to her to give a peck on her full lips.
"Babe," Eva held onto his bicep softly before he left. "Trust me, when we're out – we'll find whoever did it." She assured, hinting at his sisters killer, to which Terrell nodded, returning a half-hearted grin before leaving.
