7. IN DEPTH
"It's nothing," He looked away from the girl, hesitant to talk about the situation. "Let's just forget it." Terrell stated, getting up out of bed. "Turn this monitor on." He gestured to his ankle, not looking Eva in the eye.
Eva squinted, eyeing his back and how tense it became when he attempted to shift the topic. It wouldn't take a genius to figure out that Terrell had been hiding something, and her tattoo was a trigger to his secret.
"I think we should talk about it." Eva got up, putting on her coat as it began to become a little chilly. She walked over to where he was and sat down next to him, looking at him with a concerned look on her face.
"It's just...reminding me about my sister." Terrell started, still not wanting to make eye contact with her as he felt ashamed of being vulnerable in front of someone he'd only known for 4 weeks.
The incident regarding Terrell's little sister – Kitty – could easily trigger him, something Ross made sure to use when it came to experimentation techniques back in the lab. Anything as small as blood from a paper cut could flood his mind with the lifelike flashbacks of stumbling upon his sister and her best friend's gruesome demise.
It all took place in December, although there wasn't any snow – the air was cold enough for the residents of Sleepy Hill, the town in which Terrell and his family resided in. The house consisted of his mother – Patricia, a 911 operator, father – Boyce, a mechanic and his younger sister – Kitty.
The two siblings had gotten into an argument about inviting over Kitty's friend for a sleepover, an event Terrell would not allow. Their parents had left out of town for a weekend trip to visit an old friend.
Against her older brother's wishes of course, Kitty invited her two friends over, planning to be asleep by the time Terrell got back. Unfortunately, by the time her brother would get back – Kitty and her two friends would've been put to sleep permanently by a cannibal who'd not only murder the three girls in cold blood, but also had eaten parts of their bodies.
The family was just as disheartened when the killer's face was hid behind a burlap sack in court. The only distinct feature they'd be able to identify their little girls murderer was a distinguishable, silhouette tattoo of a flying Raven.
"Did she have the same tattoo?" Eva inquired.
"No, but her killer did." Terrell sighed, rubbing his face. "Look, I just think we should leave i-"
Eva placed her hand on his, halting him from leaving their unfinished conversation. She looked at him with concern in her eyes, yet her mind clearly wanted to know more, to see how it would come as an advantage for her.
"No, I think you should let it out. Ross always says letting out your emotions and feelings is a good thing, even if he is a little insane – he's not wrong." A small grin appeared on the woman's face, tilting her head to the side. "Trust me, I do want to know what happened to her. Maybe we can escape this hell hole together and hunt the person down."
Eva sounded like she was joking when she mentioned escaping the institute, but it had been a longing dream of hers to just walk out of the asylum and never turn back. She missed the 'real world' and she felt empty at all the opportunities she was missing. In fact, she was thankful she'd found someone as determined as Terrell, thinking she would be able to pair up with and plan their grand escape, though the idea would have to be well fleshed out.
Similarly, Terrell chuckled at the idea, fantasizing about hunting down the person who'd killed his sister and her friends in such a brutal manner – a thought which encouraged him to escape.
"Alright." He began, sighing as his gaze wandered around on the girl's carpet, for a second, taking into account how much more aesthetically pleasing her room was as opposed to his. She's even got a night stand, for fuck's sake. Terrell thought to himself.
"I'm all ears," She smiled, leaning against her arm.
"Well, I told Kitty – that's her name by the way – that she couldn't have her friends over for a sleepover. Our parents were out of town on a weekend trip to see a close friend of theirs." The man chuckled lightly at the memory, specifically at his irrational reasoning for not wanting his sister to have a sleep over.
Eva couldn't muster up any emotion before hearing him speak, it was almost as if the thought of seeing Terrell hurt or upset didn't seem to faze her in the slightest, but nevertheless she mustered up a half-hearted smile, hoping it would show she had some emotion while listening to the story.
"I left after six, my friends and I wanted to watch a movie. But it turned into a night of drinking. I never really drink, but when I do – it's just...hard to stop. Like, it'll start with one shot and the next thing you know, I'm hovered over some stranger's bathroom throwing up almost all my body weight." Terrell chuckled, adding a little bit of humor to help him stay calm throughout the story telling.
Eva gave out an airy chuckle, imaging him in the situation he'd described.
"Well, let's never go out drinking together." She joked. "Continue."
He nodded, gulping as his smile faded, realizing the point of the story was coming closer than he'd anticipated.
"I had a friend drop me home, I wasn't too drunk, but I'm still not taking the risk of driving home tipsy. So I get home, and I see two extra pair of shoes outside the back door which was in the garage – definitely not my sisters. So you could imagine how mad I was to begin with. But when I walked in, I saw blood. Almost everywhere. It felt like, I walked into that elevator scene from 'The Shining'. There were footprints, handprints – I thought it was just a stupid prank at first, but...I finally got upstairs and...it wasn't."
Eva looked down, biting on her lower lip, not knowing how to react.
"I-I'm so sorry," She looked up at him, her brows wrinkled as she took pity on him. "How does my tattoo tie into it? If you don't mind me asking."
"They found who did it – but since they were below the age of twenty one, and that stupid Act of Anonymity bill passed, we didn't know who she was. In court, she had this potato sack on her head, and her hands were tied behind her. She had that tattoo."
Eva nodded, looking away from his gaze as she pretended to wander for something to say in her mind.
"But ever since that day, I vowed to cut that tattoo off of her wrist."
"Well, I think I would know if I did something like that – probably just another person." She shrugged, getting up and taking out a bobby pin from her coat pocket. "Get dressed, I need to turn on the monitor before he wakes up."
