15. SECOND ATTEMPT

It was 24th December, Christmas creeping up right around the corner. It was everyone's favorite holiday at Springwater, partially due to the fact that the patients were treated with kindness, and as actual human beings. They would all gather in the common room (no matter how insane) and begin putting up the decorations, only the ones with good behavior got to decorate the tree. Of course, keeping in line with the asylum's strict supervision guidelines, Ross would accompany the other staff.

However, the doctor was nowhere in attendance, due to being drowned in paper that day. Instead, Sally took his place, particularly keeping a close eye on Eva, as instructed by Ross.

Sally held onto the girl's arm, just an inch above her elbow. The two entered the common room, being greeted by the strong smell of cinnamon and freshly baked cookies, complimentarily delivered by the C.I.A.

Eva's eyes lit up at the sight of such color and festivity. Her heart surprisingly became full at the prospect of everyone helping in setting up the large room. However, the thought of being locked up in Springwater was more apparent on her face than her underlying happiness.

"Now, I need you to set up these cookies per plate. Everyone gets four, and only four. Understood?" She spoke to a distracted Eva, whose eyes were glued on Terrell hanging up the decorations on the tree. She snapped her fingers, getting the pregnant woman out of her trance.

"Yeah, I got it." Eva replied rather bitterly, nodding as she looked down at the cookies.

"I have better things to do than be your nanny, so I'm trusting you not to stab someone in the eye with these straws." Sally stated, rushing off to the opposite corner of the room, leaving Eva unsupervised.

She looked down at the cookies and the plates, never registering how many she was supposed to give per person. Did she say two, or four? Probably two, why would anyone need four cookies – that's way too many cookies. Eva thought to herself, beginning to place two cookies per paper plate.

However, while she was figuring out how many cookies needed to be assigned per person, her thoughts were distracted by her subconscious' need to see Terrell, who was now cheering along with the other patients at the finished tree. She couldn't help but look back at him, thinking about all the times they two had spent together before being ripped apart.

The atmosphere of the hall seemed distracted, too busy being happy. Eva noticed this, thinking it would be a good opportunity to get Terrell all by himself and convince him to attempt another escape. Fortunately for her, Terrell walked out, excusing himself from the group he was surrounded by. Eva followed after him, unbeknownst to the man.

Once she caught up with him, Eva tapped his shoulder, causing him to stop. He turned around, furrowing his brows at her. Although the good memories of spending all his time with her came flooding back to him in waves, he was more so drowning in the hatred he'd developed for Eva, after finally realizing she was the one who'd killed his little sister.

"What do you want?" His tone exuded bitterness, crossing his arms and backing away a little, fearful of what she was capable of.

She was going to say something, but saw his stunned reaction at her developed baby bump, not being able to take his chocolate brown eyes off of it.

"Whose is that?" The man inquired, looking up at her with hope that it wasn't his child.

"Yours."

Terrell's heart pumped the fear throughout his body, before dropping to the pits of his stomach where – with the bile – he felt as if it was going to shoot itself up and out of his throat.

"You're not planning on keeping it are you?"

Eva pursed her lips, slightly offended that he would ask her such a question. Of course she wasn't going to keep it, but the asylum left her no choice. She had to give birth to a child she carried for nine months and have it ripped away from her the minute it came out.

"Terrell, listen," She inched closer, hoping he would notice the desperate gaze in her eyes. "I know you don't want to see me, but we have to try again." The woman pleaded. "We don't have to spend our lives together we can go our separate ways once we reach shore"

"What about that?" His head gestured to her enlarged stomach.

"I promise I'll take care of it. You don't have to be involved in its life, but please, I'm not having Ross take it away from me as so-"

"Terrell?" A female voice echoed, sounding a little distressed.

She walked to where the two stood, causing them to turn their heads as she ushered herself forwards. Her fingers nervously twirled the ends of her box braids, looking at the unfamiliar pregnant lady in panic.

The man sighed, looking at his girlfriend – Celeste. He walks over to her, holding onto her free hand with reassurance. The girl leaned closer, resting her head onto his shoulder while her eyes were glued on the mystery girl with a bob.

This interaction was obvious to Eva, whom translated a blank facial expression, although her underlying jealousy was beginning to brew in her heart – bitter that she wasn't able to keep him as well as his new girlfriend was.

"W-Who is she?" Celeste inquired, hiding herself once she caught Eva's gaze burning into hers.

"She's just a friend..." Terrell spoke, looking back at Eva who waited impatiently for his response regarding his escape. He looked back at Celeste, slowly pulling her away from his embrace. "Babe, listen, we're leaving this place."

"What? How? You know how strict the security is? What if we get caught, or worse – killed. Our heads will be on sticks waiting to be ravaged by hungry wolves!"

"That won't happen, I'll make sure of it – I promise." Terrell spoke, holding onto her shoulders as he gazed into her eyes, speaking softly. "You trust me, right?"

She nodded her head, looking over at Eva once again.

"But I don't trust her." She stated, petrified.

"Join the club, we've got jackets." Eva called out, walking towards Celeste.

"Eva," Terrell sternly spoke, causing the woman to roll her eyes. He looked back at his girlfriend. "I trust her, so should you, OK? She won't hurt you. I promise."

Celeste nodded, gulping at the prospect of escaping. Nevertheless, she held his hand, walking along with him as Eva followed the two. They'd plan on taking a short cut to the garage, thinking it would be less risky. However, the short cut consisted of the dark fire escape tunnel – causing the three of them to rely on their instinct.

The tunnel consisted of many paths to other rooms in the asylum, which would be illuminated by the gas lights which sat ten inches away from one another. Although they wouldn't have any matches, the two women relied on Terrell to be the one who would guide them to the garage.

"I feel like I've been walking for hours, are we even going the right way?" Eva spoke, her voice laced with irritation. She didn't know what bothered her the most, the fact that the three of them were blindly following Terrell, or that Celeste insisted on holding Eva's hand throughout the journey.

"We're probably almost there, Eva." Terrell replied, stopping occasionally to let his instinct lead the way.

"How would you even know that? Look at this place, its pitch black! I doubt you can see anything." Eva rolled her eyes, feeling Celeste whimper at the two fighting.

"I can sense it, we're almost there." He nodded his head, holding onto Eva's hand as he dragged the two women down a straight path, finally stopping at a door.

Above it, the door was marked 'GARAGE' in the typical fire escape route sign. The three of them sighed in relief, finally being able to leave this place once and for all.

"OK, once we enter the garage – Celeste, you pull down the fire alarm, that way the other patients will be alerted to come to the boats."

This statement caused Eva to kiss her teeth, still not on board with helping everyone escape. She believed Terrell should have been thankful that Eva even allowed Celeste to leave with them, considering her to be extremely paranoid and a possible hazard to have on board.

Nevertheless, Terrell twisted the knob, entering the garage for the first time in eight months. The three of them followed behind in, only for Eva to gasp in shock.
