13. NEW ADDITION
Eva woke up to the sound of nurses speaking around her, a sharp sensation piercing her upper hand. Her heavy eyes fluttered her out of the deep sleep she was in. Her head felt as if it was about to fall off her shoulders, feeling extremely light headed.
"Oh good, you're awake." Nurse Grace spoke softly. She grabbed the clipboard resting at the foot of the stretcher, before writing down notes on it.
"W-Where am I?" Eva sat up, beginning to panic but keeping it suppressed. Her curious eyes wandered around to every inch of the room – never having seen something so clean and well decorated. "Why am I in the hospital?"
"It's not the hospital. It's the emergency ward of the asylum. You were found with a bleeding wrist and we had to get your health back to normal before you lost the baby."
Her eyes met Grace's, intently staring at her in confusion and disgust at what she just said.
"Baby?" Eva stammered, the panic of this entire situation just beginning to settle in. "What baby?"
"You're pregnant," Grace frowned, puzzled at her confusion. "You do know you were pregnant, right? Because the baby is 12 weeks. You're almost showing too." She gestured at her abdomen.
Eva stared at it in both shock and horror, not ready to accept the possibility of becoming a mother, especially in a place like Springwater. Of course, knowing about Ross' infertility, there could only be one possible father – Terrell.
"I don't want it." She blurted bluntly, nervously toying with her thumbs.
"Oh dear, we don't do abortions at a Christian institute – that's against the Bible."
Eva couldn't believe the words coming out of the Nurses mouth, her brows knitting beneath her thick bangs at the pure ignorance she was showing.
"I don't want the child. I'm not going to raise it...here."
"Well, we can have it birthed right here in our facility, but if you're insistent on donating it, we'd be giving it away to an adoption center nearby." Grace spoke, slightly hesitant at the idea. "I wouldn't suggest it though, a mother could develop all kinds of illnesses if her baby is taken away from her – with or without consent."
The idea of being separated from her child only bothered her more, knowing she wouldn't be able to properly care for it if Ross intended on extending her stay. She'd never have to worry about abortion, thus not having any possible tools to perform one.
"I'll keep it." Eva responded. "But I need specialized treatment before and after I give birth. I'm not staying in a regular bedroom, nor am I downing pills for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I want proper treatment so I can at least have a healthy child."
Nurse Grace nodded, making Eva lay down.
"I'll talk to Dr. McKee about it – I can assure you and your baby will be well cared for." She finished with a grin. "I need you here for another twenty four hours, and then we can have the specialized treatment consultation with you, Dr. McKee and Mr. Holloway."
Eva nodded absent-mindedly, only focused on getting rid of this baby before it would've been too late.
Once she watched the Nurse shut the curtains, she waited patiently for the footsteps to become almost silent, assuring the nurses absence. For her own safety – Eva waited almost half an hour before pulling out the IV needles, wrapping the band aid that was on her skin around the open end of the needle to avoid blood from squirting out.
She walked past the other curtain drawn stretchers, making her way into the 'Bath Therapy' room. This seemed like the only logical and easy way to get rid of the child growing inside of her – for once, being rare and thinking about the wellbeing of the child growing up in a place where its mother was stuck.
Eva stepped into the empty tub, plugging in the silicone bath plug. She turned on the hot faucet, feeling the water run. Her heart began to race at the thought of her skin possibly peeling off at the hot temperature making contact with her skin, but if this was the only way out for her growing child – then so be it.
The water began to get warmer by the second, making an impatient Eva stare up at the clock, hoping Nurse Grace wouldn't be back immediately. Her gaze became fixated on the time, wishing it would go faster. Suddenly, her attention diverted back to her skin which had been stung by the boiling temperature of the water, causing her to bite down on her hand in order to subdue her screams.
Her other hand held onto the edge of the tub, spreading her legs open as her abdomen was exposed. She quickly shut the faucet off, sighing at the feeling.
Eva's lower region started to sting more than any other part of her body, which caused her mouth to gape, but no noise came out, instead only sighing and shaky huffing at the excruciating pain the water brought her.
She could do nothing but shut her eyes, throwing her head back as the nape of her neck rested against the edge of the tub, continuing her cycle of sighing and huffing as a way of silently translating her pain.
