Ch. 5: Letting Go of the Past

I did it. I actually did it. I changed the past, which I'm guessing changed the future. The gritty agonizing future that once awaited me is no more. Come to think of it, I'm not sure what will happen next anymore. It's all a mystery now. But that also means I have a chance to create the best possible future I can. I'm not Red Hood, or even Robin, I'm Jason Todd. And I'm gonna live my life how it was meant to be lived.

The ride back to the bat cave was quiet. But this was a different quiet than before. It was sort of a happy quiet. At least that's how Jason saw it. As the batmobile skidded into the cave, Robin quickly sprang out of his seat in joy. Everyone present in the room was startled by his unexpected outburst.

"Bruce do you know what this means? I can finally have the chance that was given to me, that you gave to me. No more suffering, no more hate, no more regret. I can live now!" Jason announces to Bruce shaking his arm in excitement. The boy's smile disintegrates seeing the motionless body of Bruce.

"Bruce? Bruce did you just hear what I said?" Jason says in a worried voice. "What's wrong with him Alfred?" Jason's eyes widen as he sees the elderly butler in the same frozen state.

Suddenly, a voice is heard out of the blue, "They can't hear you Jason Todd. Not while I have them paused in time"

Jason swings his body toward the familiar voice. "What the hell are you doing? I fixed my mistake. I changed the past."

"That you did. But now it is time for the memories of the previous future to be erased from your mind." Metron states.

"Erased? What...what are you talking about?"

"You leaped to an alternate timeline once you prevented your own death. You memories of the time after death and ahead while you were Red Hood are not required for this timeline. I have come to relieve them from you."

Jason eyes him uneasily, "So what you're saying is I won't remember all the pain I went through? It would be like it never happened."

"Because it hasn't happened, Jason Todd. Not in this timeline. Currently you are a boy who is in the care of Bruce Wayne. Not a man from the future in a boy's body. To ensure that the flow of the time space continuum is intact I must remove all memories of that alternate future timeline."

Jason sighs and shakes his head, "I'm gonna stop you right there. You had me at forgetting the pain. Do what you gotta do."

Metron raises his hand and extends it in Jason's direction. As if Metron's hand was a vacuum, the unneeded memories are sucked out of Jason's brain and into his palm. Metron closes his hand into a fist, crushing the memories and destroying them from existence. Jason shuts his eyes as his body becomes motionless like that of Bruce and Alfred. Metron's job done, he unpauses the time and leaves the timeline. Once everything is back to normality, Jason opens his eyes.

"Someone is unusually chipper. I take it the mission went well?" Alfred asks the dynamic duo.

"It was unexpected that the Joker showed up. Ra's Al Ghul must have hired him as a distraction. But we handled it." Bruce looked at his Robin. Jason double blinked and looked back at Bruce.

"You mean I handled it! I took down the Joker single handedly! You should have been there Alfred. I kicked a..."

Jason hesitated by Bruce's glare and corrected himself. "I kicked butt."

Bruce nods. "That's what I thought. Alright Jason it's past your bedtime. You know the drill"

"Aww come on old man! I beat down the clown price of crime! I think that calls for a celebration. Don't you think so Alfred?"

"I do believe the boy deserves a reward of some sorts. A celebration should suffice" Alfred smiles slightly and winks at Jason.

"That's two to one! What do ya say dad?" Jason begs giving him puppy dog eyes.

Bruce's neutral face forms into a smirk as he ruffles Jason's hair. "Alright Alfred take out the cake. Jason deserves it since he was the hero today."

"Yesss!" Jason hoots pumping his fist in the air.

Alfred nods and starts up the steps up to Wayne manor. Bruce and Jason follow.

"You know, I think you're too old for the puppy dog eyes. You're not cute anymore." Bruce chuckles.

Jason laughs and elbows Bruce in the side, "It worked didn't it?"

The echoes of their laughter can be heard from the bat cave as Jason and Bruce share the conversations a father and his son would have. The Robin has returned to his nest and his family, where he belongs.
