Ch. 4: The Last Laugh
Europe. That's the country where this all goes down. I remember the brisk wind scraping against my skin. The dark gray skies that filled the air. And the snow. It really does it snow a hell of a lot there. How could I forget the place of my death?
Jason springs into the air and bashes his knee into a clown goon's jaw. He flips over another one and strikes the side of the next. Jason is beating his way up to his target.
"I can get him Batman! The Joker is mine!" Jason yells running after the psycho clown.
"Jason no! Wait for..." Before Batman can finish, a clown goon bashes him square in the face, knocking him out cold.
Hours earlier...
"Jason its time to suit up. I found the location of Ra's Al Ghul in a city in Europe. We need to cut him off before he completes his plan." Bruce says to Jason.
When those words touch Jason's ears a shiver goes down his spine. This is the day. This is my end. Suddenly the young boy's attitude then changes. No, this doesn't have to be where I end. I can change things. I will change things. I understand why Metron sent me here. This is the moment that changes everything. There's still hope.
"Alright Bruce, I'm coming" Jason replies. While putting on his Robin suit, in his mind he starts forming a plan. This time I'll be ready.
Present time...
Once Batman wakes from his rest, he is surrounded by Jokers clown goons. He is tied to a chair with his arms and legs restrained. He watched as two goons play around with the gadgets from his utility belt, which they took from his waist.
"Man how much stuff can he fit in this thing?" says one of the goons.
"Hey! Guys he's waking up!" says another one.
"You ain't going no where Bat Freak. The boss man says we have to watch yous."
"Yeah yeah! We were smart and took your little bat belt! And since you ain't got no powers, this'll be a piece of cake waiting for the boss!"
"I say we just kill him now and save everyone a favor. We'd become legends for the men who took down Batman!"
"Kill him, kill him, kill him!" roars the crowd of goons with identical clown masks. One big goon with toned muscles walks up to Batman and points a gun at his head.
"Say goodnight, jackass!" he shouts to the Caped Crusader. But before he could pull the trigger, Batman presses a button on his glove. The button triggers a command to the utility belt, that command being an EMP shock wave. Immediately the lights in the room shut down and darkness takes over the area.
"What the hell? Someone grab him!"
"I can't see! Where did he...oof."
"Agghhhh!"
"Shoot him! Shoot..."
"Joe? Bobby? Randal? Guys?" the last goon trembles at the suddenly quiet room. He looks around the shadowed room and takes a step back bumping into something. He slowly turns around and sees the Dark Knight.
"Ahhhh!" the goon's cowardly cry was silenced by Batman grabbing him and pinning him against the wall.
"Where is the Joker?!" he says in a deep raspy voice.
"He-he's in a w-warehouse..."
"What warehouse?!"
"Aw man... The Joker's gonna kill me!"
"Trust me, when I'm done with you, you're gonna wish you were dead."
...
Robin's eyes open slowly, as he comes to. Of course Jason saw this coming, him getting knocked out and strapped to a chair. But this is part Jason hated the most. He looks up and flinches, seeing the psychopath himself sitting right in front of him.
"Rise and shine, baby bird! That was a risky move back there, chasing me with out daddy batty. For your foolish bravery, you have the privilege with playing with my good friend..." The Joker pulls out his signature weapon of torture, "Crowbar! I'll let you two become acquainted." He finishes talking and raises the crowbar for a painful strike.
When Jason was Robin, he usually didn't like hold things in his utility belt. He was more of a hand to hand combat kind of guy. He thought the silly gadgets were a waste of time. But desperate times called for desperate measures, so before going out on the hunt after Joker, Jason stuffed his belt to the brim with all the gadgets he could find. Let's see if the Joker can handle a bit of state of the art technology thrown at him.
As soon as he woke up, Jason started using his first gadget, some acid spray he hid in his glove. The acid had been eating away the ropes through Joker's monologue and had softened them up enough for Jason to snap them off and punch Joker in the nose. While he's recovering from that unexpected punch, Robin sprays the ropes tying his legs and breaks them also. The Clown Prince of Crime is surprised by his escape but then laughs hysterically.
"You sneaky little booger! You're actually smarter than you look. I give you points for that! But boy, you still aren't no Bat..." Before he can finish, Robin takes a pellet out of his belt and throws it at the ground. It explodes and fills the air with smoke.
"Wow, I'm impressed! This might be an actual challenge." Joker says fumbling around in the blinding smoke. Jason didn't know what most of these gadgets did, but he would find out trying them out on the Joker. He throws pellet after pellet at Joker. Upon contact, one of them is an electro pellet which shocks the Joker, another turns out to be an exploding pellet that sets him on fire, the last one releases a sonic high pitched sound. Jason covers his ears hoping it's hurting the Joker more than him.
"Aagggghhh! Make... It... Stop!" the Joker whines in agony. While he's distracted, the boy wonder remembers one important factor: the bomb! He runs to the only exit door in the warehouse, where the bomb was near. Once he finds it Jason reaches into his belt and takes out yet another device. He hopes this is the disruptor Bruce uses to deactivate explosives. It could also be a grenade but Robin decided to trust his gut and takes a chance, placing the device on the bomb. The device starts sparking up, electricuting the bomb. The timer, which once had 5 mins, stops counting down. He deactivated the bomb! Jason chuckled at this victory but forgot about the diseased maniac behind him. The Joker swung at head making Jason fall to the ground. Jason felt a jolt of throbbing pain on his head and knew for sure it was bad. He feels cold stinging bash of the crowbar hit his body repeatedly. Jason weakly looks at the Joker whos smile is upside down. His clothes are scorched and his ears and nose are dripping with blood from the sonic pellet.
"Heh you really showed your true colors today kid. I mean, I'm the one who's supposed to have tricks up my sleeve! You even found the bomb I planted, you little detective. You've made Batman proud no doubt." He takes out a pistol from his pocket and points it at Jason. "But you've also been an obnoxious brat so I think I'll be doing ol Batsy a favor! Hahaha!"
Jason spits some blood and mumbles words at the clown. The Joker bends down to get closer to the boy. "What's that, I can't hear yooou?"
Jason grunts and says under his breath, "You talk too much." Before Joker can react, Jason presses one last gadget he had in his hand. He remembers this one. It's one of Batman's favorites. The device starts making some sonic sounds, more faint than before. The sound isn't for humans. Jason smiles as all the bats in the ceiling fly down and zip zag randomly through the room. More bats crash through the windows and swarm around the warehouse. In the confusion, Jason gets up, takes out a grappling gun and points it at Joker. He fires it at his shoulder, easily going through and pinning him too the wall. Grappling gun is still a gun. Jason the walks over to the clown and smirks.
"Who's laughing now?" he says looking Joker in the eye. For the first time, Jason sees pure anger in Joker's eyes.
"You were supposed to die!" he shouts.
"I've tried death. I'm not a fan." Robin says before knocking him out. Just then the door to the warehouse swings open, Batman running inside. Jason looks at him annoyed.
"You're late."
Batman looks wide eyed at Robin,"You took down the Joker?"
"I came prepared." he says pointing at his belt. "Theses toys really come in handy."
Bruce walks to Jason and puts his hand on his shoulder, "Well done Robin. But promise that you'll never run off like that again ok?"
"Sure Bruce." he says running to Batman, giving him a hug. "I promise."
From that moment, the future of Jason Todd was altered. The reality that once was set has been shifted, just by this event. Of course, Metron has been watching every second of Jason's decisions. He knows time is a delicate thing to manipulate; even the smallest change in the past can create unpredictable alternate futures. Yet Metron sits back in his Mobius chair and smiles, knowing that what he's done is for the better. What happens next is all up to Jason now.
