Stereotypes
Dan ran a hand down his face as Kevin brought the DVD closer.
"It looks like such a cool movie, all the people in it are like us!" He pointed at the box art and Dan huffed. He has seen his fair share of stereotypes within media through the years and some of his vampire friends were obsessed with following many of them. He didn't understand all the fuss about it.
"Sure, just gather all the lads together I guess." Kevin squealed in delight before racing out of the room.
---
Sitting down on the couches (and Dan in his fancy armrest that was forbidden for any of the other Lads to even touch seeing as it was hundreds of years old) was nice, everyone chatting as Kevin set the movie up.
"I'm excited to see what this movie is, it sounds interesting." Sean said with a smile. He looked over the box art again.
Kevin laughed. "I know you all will enjoy it, I just recently watched the trailer on Youtube. Apparently it came out years ago when all of us were living under rocks."
Soon, the movie started and the lights were dimmed.
Dan flipped through a book absent-mindedly, not fond of movies and the witchcraft behind them. He had seen lots in his lifetime but the television was one of the most unbelievable of them. They gave him headaches if he watched for too long.
Daithi laughed and pointed at the tv. "Hey, that guy is Daniel!" The vampire in the movie was protective over his daughter and their hotel, keeping a careful watch over it. "He's just as spiny as this bastard too!"
Dan snorted. He had to admit, it matched his personality quite well with tradition. His chest ached as he watched the daughter and father vampire duo act together. He hadn't had any other immortal monsters in his life directly. Most of the other vampires he knew were younger and not currently residing in Ireland. He would only see them once every ten years besides letter they would send. It had only changed when he met the lads.
The movie went on and introduced various creatures and monsters. The vampire welcomed them all into the hotel, even being friends with many of them.
"The human character is just as goofy as you!" Sean burst out laughing, mocking Kevin as he pouted.
"He's lovable and sweet, just like me."
"Don't forget chaotic," Dan rolled his eyes fondly.
"Just like the vampire would say!" Brian shouted, making all the others laugh in return. There were too many parallels within the film and their lives.
Except...
As the movie finished, Kevin was bickering with Daithi and Brian about how it ended, complaining or praising the storytelling within it. "A human in monster society is definitely dangerous." Brian warned, shaking his head.
Kevin's eyes widened. "Hey! I'm a human in monster society!"
"Barely," Daithi snorted.
Dan noticed that Sean was uncharacteristically quiet.
It was abnormal for the werewolf to ignore all the friendly banter within the group, especially if he was able to choose sides.
Dan got up from his chair, tapping his friend lightly on the shoulder. "Is everything alright?" He whispered, trying not to draw attention to them.
Sean looked up in surprise. He shook his head with a shaky smile. "Nah, just really need to go to the bathroom. I'll be back!" He left the room shortly after.
---
It had been a few hours since they had watched the movie and Dan hadn't seen Sean once within that time.
Curiously, he went to the werewolf's room.
Knocking, he got a quiet answer.
"Come in," his voice spoke up through the door. Dan pushed the door open and closed it behind him, walking over to the bed. Sean was laying face down on it.
"Is everything alright?" He asked again, concern bleeding into his voice.
Sean was quiet for a moment. "They got it all wrong."
"What?" Dan tilted his head in confusion. It was a cartoon meant for children, it wasn't a documentary or anything. Hotel Transylvania didn't exist in real life.
"They got werewolves all wrong."
Dan's eyes widened in understanding. That was what it was about.
"You've never seen pop culture media on werewolves before, have you?"
Sean shook his head, sniffling. "We didn't have electricity for so long that there was no choice to even look at it. Why do humans see us that way?" Dan hummed softly, running his hand across Sean's back. "They made all the werewolves hairy with hundreds of kids. That's not what we are. We are people too!"
Dan gave him a sad smile. "Well, can I tell you a secret?"
Sean sighed. "What?"
"It is best if humans don't understand us."
"What do you mean?" He looked up, tear stained cheeks glistening.
"That means we won't be caught as much. If they view us as these creatures that they depict in movies and books, they won't look for the real us. They can try but they won't ever find a werewolf like that."
Sean chuckled wetly. "I guess you're right." It was silent for a little bit, just Dan rubbing his friend's back as he calmed down. "Daniel, why are you fine with all the stereotypes with vampires?"
Dan laughed. "When you live as long as I do, you hear of everything. You start to stop caring what others think because its not true. If they don't see you for your real self, then they don't deserve to know you. Plus, some of them are downright hilarious. I don't know any vampire that would advertise chocolate cereal or sleep in a coffin."
Sean laughed harder at that. "I cannot imagine you wearing a stuffy cape or hanging off a ceiling."
Dan tilted his head. "But I can do that."
Sean looked up in surprise. "What?"
"Yeah, have I never shown you?" Dan asked, getting a shake of the head as an answer. Dan stepped away and jumped up. With expertise, he hung upside down on the ceiling.
"What the fuck?" Sean asked, sitting up quickly. "It just looks like you are standing on the ceiling!"
Dan laughed. "That's pretty much what it is. I can walk as well." He jumped and landed back on the floor, dusting himself off.
Sean's eyes were wide. "What else do the humans get right and wrong?"
Dan shrugged. "I guess the whole having to be invited in."
"But I literally let you come in."
Dan smiled, "Yeah but that is just because its rude to barge in. Trust me, I can barge in if I wanted to." The both laughed together.
They laid back on the bed together, staring at the ceiling in thought.
"Did all the stereotypes bother you at one point?"
Dan nodded his head with a serious look on his face. "Yeah, back when I was first turned. A lot of rumors of vampires spread around in warning. I remember thinking it was stupid before I first turned." Seans eyes widened. He had never heard Dan mention anything about his turning or back then. "Eventually it hurt when people started looking at me like a monster, claiming that someone like me would drain the blood from their sheep or cows. It hurt being exiled and labeled as a monster."
They were quiet once again. Sean turned over in the bed, a slight smile on his face. "Thanks for sharing with me."
Dan smiled back. "Any time."
