Blood Brothers{An SPN One Shot}

This one shot was written for @cwSupernatural aka macandreads SPN one shot purgatory contest. Sorry they wouldn't let me tag your SPN account for some reason.

Dirt flies as a dent is made into the earth. Thick, dark globs rise from the dust and Leviathans are formed. The hunter, vampire, and angel are surrounded.

"Son of a..." Dean grunts as one wraps their arms around him. He struggles against the creature, getting one arm loose and elbowing it in the stomach. It lets go and he turns to kill it. He hesitates for a split second when seeing that it is a woman before chopping her head off.

The small battle doesn't last long and the three soon triumph as they look at their dead predators.

Benny breathes in the fresh air, well as clean of air as he can get in this place between heaven and hell. Wiping the black ooze off his blade, he looks to Dean. "Let's get out of here before they come back to life. Damn freaks."

Dean twirls his blade and wipes sweat from his brow, he gestures for Benny to lead the way. "It'd be nice if we could find a water source." Dean follows the vampire he, for some freakish reason, has almost come to trust. If only his dad could see him now. I bet he's rolling in his grave. His eyes ever aware, Dean scans the woods as they walk. He looks behind at their third, lagging companion. "Cass! Come on! We ain't got all day!"

The angel looks around. "Don't you miss color? Or hearing the simple flutter of a butterfly's wings? Or the smell of fresh spring flowers?"

Dean rolls his eyes, but Benny nods his head the teeniest bit. "I do actually." He chuckles, "it's been a few years since I've enjoyed the simple pleasures of life."

Dean snickers, "yeah, I'd like to get out of this crap-hole and enjoy the simple pleasures too, if you know what I mean." His lips curve to one side in a suggestive grin. Benny shakes his head, but doesn't disagree with him.

Cas looks at him, head tilted. "No, I'm afraid I don't. Please explain."

Dean smacks his friend on the shoulder. "The pizza man, Cas. The pizza man."

"Oh yes. I..." He furrows his eyebrows. "I remember that. Unfortunately."

Dean chuckles, "you'll never live that one down buddy. Meg has her claws in you now."

As they near the river, growling is heard in the distance. The rustling of leaves to the east turns the hunter's head and a werewolf sprints towards them. The monster knocks Cass down, his back hitting the solid earth and making leaves fly around him. A loud howl erupts from her before she goes for the angel's throat. Before she even has a chance to sink a tooth in, Dean shoves her off Cass, making her roll in the dirt. She jumps up, claws extended and leaps at the hunter, who grabs her by the throat and tosses her up against a tree. Her back hits the bark causing her jacket to tear. Dean walks up to her, wrapping his fingers around her neck and lifting her off the ground. The knife from his hand makes a deep plunge into her stomach and he lets her go as she slides down the trunk. She is not dead of course. Not yet. She's only injured badly. Only silver can kill a werewolf. Taking the blade that he always carried on him from his inside jacket pocket, Dean slices her throat and blood spurts out, a few drops landing on him. He didn't care, it mixed in with the dried mud, grime, and blood that he was already covered in. One thing he did miss about life on earth was long, hot showers.

Cass stood up, brushing himself off. "You didn't have to kill her you know."

"Technically she's already dead, can't really kill anything twice."

"Yeah, you can. Now she never has a chance to return to the other side." Benny speaks up as he runs a hand down his five day shadow.

"We're in purgatory. How the hell would she get out? The magic school bus?"

"Same way you're going to get me out. You extract her soul."

Dean shakes his head, "nah uh, only souls I'm leavin' outta here with is my own and yours. Ain't nobody else hitchin' a ride."

Benny holds his hands up. "I'm not saying anyone else should. I wouldn't ask you to do that, Dean. I'm just sayin' that was a possibility."

Dean sighs, "yeah I know, Benny. I know. Come on, let's get some water."

They walk down to the stream and Dean begins taking his boots off. His pants come off next. Then his jacket and shirt. He sets his shoes by the trunk of a tree before hanging his jeans and other items on a limb above him.

"Hey, there isn't any strippin' in purgatory boss." Benny smirks.

"Whatever. Just close your eyes. I can't stand another day of," he gestures to his appearance, "this." He finishes stripping down to bare skin before walking into the water.

Benny rolls his eyes and sits on a nearby log. Reaching into the inner pocket of his coat he brings out a piece of wood and begins to whittle away at it.

"What are you making?" Cass asks as he sits on the log beside the vampire, perhaps a little too close because Benny scoots down a bit.

"I'm not sure yet, been working on it for a few days." He examines it. It started out as a decent sized piece of wood, but is now turning into a work of art. "I guess I'll see when I get there."

Cass watches him for a while before getting up to walk around. What is taking Dean so long, he wonders to himself as he walks to the bank.

The hunter is redressing himself when Cass quietly walks up. "You look like you feel much better." Cass says, close behind him.

Dean jumps as he is pulling his pants up, making him stumble and fall to the ground. "Dammit, Cass!! What have I told you about personal space?" He stands back up, facing the angel and dusting his the back of his boxers off. He finishes pulling his pants up and buttons them before tugging his shirt over his head. Cass is there to hand him his jacket and Dean snatches it from his hand.

Benny chuckles when he walks up. "Trouble in paradise?"

"Shut it and let's go." Dean gathers the rest of his things and pushes past the angel and vampire. "How far to the portal?"

Benny strides in beside him, keeping his pace. "Not far from here. We should be there by this evening."

As dusk settles in on the three, they make their way through brush and weeds, holding branches back for each other, so the companion behind doesn't get whacked in the face.

            "We're gettin' close," Benny says.

"Really? Cause I don't see crap. What the hell is this escape hatch supposed to look like?" Dean asks, his tone filled with unbelief in the vampire's words.

"He doesn't know." Cass only deepens his friend's doubts.

"Hey, you just drug me through the fire. Please tell me you know." Dean looks at Benny.

            "It's here. They promised."

"Oh they? Well, that's comforting." Dean looks around him.

"Well, even if it does exist..." Cass glances at the trees above.

"Broken record, Cass." Benny sighs, his tone tired.

The angel turns to his friend, "Dean, it's a human portal. There's still no proof that an angel can pass."

"Stow it, Cass. You're comin' that's final." Dean's tone is matter of fact. Ain't no way in hell I'm leaving you behind, he thinks to himself.

"I'm just saying." He claps a hand on Dean's shoulder, making him stop. "If it doesn't work, thank you." Cass's eyes hold infinite gratitude. "For everything."

Dean looks away, rolling his eyes. "Save the Hallmark. Okay? It's gonna work." His tone suggests that he is trying to convince himself as much as he's trying to convince the angel. "Nobody gets left behind." He walks on ahead to catch up with Benny and Cass soon follows behind.

"Maybe you were lied to. Maybe there is no seam." Cass walks behind Benny.

"I lie. I don't get lied to." Benny argues. "Aren't you guys all about faith?"

"Not particularly." The fallen angel states.

The three look around when a sudden, non-existent wind picks up a leaf and carries it into the air. They look up and see the tiniest wisp of blue. It glows and dances within itself.

"O ye three of little faith." Benny looks at the wisp.

"What the hell?" Dean's brows furrow as his eyes follow the leaf and take in the glowing blue.

"There it is. It's reacting to you." The angel looks at his human companion.

Dean and Benny look at each other and nod their heads. It's time.

"Alright, you ready?" Dean reaches for the knife in his jacket pocket. "Just like we talked about." Running the blade across the skin of his left forearm, blood streams out as he looks up at Benny.

"You put a lot of trust in me, brother." Benny looks at the man whom he now calls a friend and true family. The man who is going to save his life.

"You earned it." Dean says before cutting Benny's wrist.

They grip each other's forearms, their blood blending into one. Dean begins to cast the spell to extract Benny's soul as the human's blood begins to warm on the vampire's skin and vice versa.

Benny turns his face to the sky and his hand begins to glow in Dean's. The hunter's face twists in concern before the vampire's whole body seems to glow bright as his soul is absorbed by Dean. Benny transforms into red, then tinges of black before his being is locked into Dean's own skin. Like flames disappearing into the night sky. The cut shines before closing back up. Dean grunts a little before stowing his knife away.

He looks at Cass, "let's go."

The angel looks at him in disbelief, but follows his lead along the rocky edge. They reach the seam, but Cass stops them.

            "Dean, wait!"

Once again the black globs that have constantly been hunting them land in the earth and Leviathans once again show their faces. Now that the human is closer the portal opens wider, the seam dances now with the colors of black, blue, and an almost blinding white light.

Dean goes after the first Leviathan he lays eyes on. The "man" goes after the human, punching him in the face, causing Dean to stumble and roll down the rocky hill.

He now turns to Cass, who tries to kill the "man" using his angel powers. The "woman" kicks him behind the knees, knocking him to the ground. The two scum take turns using Cass as their own personal kickboxing bag. The angel regains a bit of footing and punches the woman, throwing her to the ground. The male opens his jaws, revealing his sharp teeth and true form as a long, slithering tongue makes its way out of its round head and mouth. Before the creature has a chance to eat the angel, Dean cuts its head off. The female charges them once again, but Cass punches her in the stomach and Dean finishes the job.

Cass, who is on his knees trying to catch his breath, is grabbed by the collar of his trench coat and picked up by Dean.

"We gotta move!! The portal's closing." Dean pulls him along until they reach the small outcroppings they'll have to climb to reach their freedom. While Dean walks up the rocks, the angel crawls.

            "Cass, dammit!! Come on!!"

Dean steps into the light, one foot at a time and reaches back for the angel's hand. "Come on!!!"

            Cass grabs Dean's arm.

            "I got you! Hold on!!"

            "Dean!"

"Hold on!!" He can feel his friend losing his grasp.

Suddenly the angel lets go. "Dean. Go!" His mind is set. He won't leave.

Dean looks at him in disbelief before the seam swallows him whole. His friend is gone. Maybe never to return.
