Charles Lee wrote to his friend, Thomas Jefferson. He explained his situation, not saying who it was he liked. It was the classic "person I can't have" cliché. Jefferson wrote back that, that situation was such a cliché, and that he could just tell the person he liked that he liked them. Charles wrote back that it wasn't that easy. The letters were as is
Dearest Thomas Jefferson,
As you may know I have gained such a liking for someone I cannot obtain their feeling. You wrote to me that I should just tell them, but in my case it would be considered bad, and wouldn't ever work out. I am sorry to be such a put down, as you would word it, but truly, I shall never be able to be with them. Forever, Charles Lee.
Dear Charles Lee,
I have no words on this matter then. Do what you think is best, just don't kill yourself over this matter. It would not help at all, for I understand only slightly what you are going through with this liking you gained. I am sorry for not being able to help a friend of mine. I wish you best of luck with your situation. Sincerely, Thomas Jefferson.
