The Strange Pack

"So, what's your name?" I asked.

"I'll tell you if you tell me your name." he told me.

"Fair enough," I said. "I'm Stardancer."

Nightshade," he replied. "Er, that's my name."

"Gotcha," I said.

"NIGHTSHADE!!!" a black wolf with red eyes snarled. Nightshade flinched but smiled at him.

"Hello, Blackout," he said. "I ran into a guest, as you can tell. Don't worry, she's reckless, but harmless."

I shivered. Blackout reminded me so much of Shadewalker. However, Shadewalker was just smug and angry. Blackout was ginormous and vicious looking.

"Yeah, she looks puny," he said, shouldering me as he walked away.

Clearly we caused a commotion, because other Spirit Wolves began to walk out of their dens, giving each other shocked expressions.

A young elegant silver wolf, probably Shadewalker's age walked towards Nightshade.

"Nightshade," she said. "Please explain."

"Yes, Alpha," Nightshade said, ducking his head, respectfully.

Alpha? But she's young! But her eyes were full of wisdom.

"Stardancer here belongs to another pack," he said. "However she stumbled upon ours on a nightly adventure. Don't worry, it was an accident that she got here."

The Alpha of the strange pack looked thoughtful. "It's late...." she said. "So, we'll let you stay here for the night."

"Thank you, um..." I started, but trailed off. I didn't know what I should call her.

She seemed to realize what seemed to be up. "You can call me Daybreak," she said.

"Thank you, Daybreak," I said. Then, with a start, I realized that I could see her ribs.

I looked around, and realized that all the spirit wolves looked underfed.

Don't they hunt in the Enchanted Forest? I wondered. Of course they don't. It's not their territory. But they're so skinny that they must be underfed...

There was a pale blue wolf pup, about Ghost's age, whimpering with hunger. And I felt a pang of pity.

With a shiver, I began to pace around. I had no idea where to sleep.

A young sky blue spirit wolf, with white paws and a white tipped tail walked towards me.

"Hello," she said. "I'm Moonlark,"

"Hi, um, I really have idea where I should go." I said.

"You can sleep in my den if you'd like." she offered.

"Thank you!" I said, joyfully.

Moonlark was so sweet to do this for me. I wagged my tail a little.

She cocked her head at me, and I noticed that one of her ears was torn.

"What happened?" I asked her.

Moonlark looked surprised. "Oh, this?" she asked. "It was the consequence of a skirmish with a coyote." she answered.

"Does it hurt?" I asked.

"You're full of questions," Moonlark remarked then answered. "No, not anymore."

"Anyways, thanks for letting me sleep in your den," I said as I drifted off to sleep.
