Chapter One: Ordinary Life

In the heart of Texas, surrounded by dense forests and rolling hills, there was a small, rural town called Raven's Peak.

Raven's Peak has a rich history, dating back to the 1800s, with stories of Native American settlements and pioneer explorers. The town had a small-town charm, with a central square, a diner and a few shops along Main Street.

The surrounding forests are dense and mysterious, with rumors of strange creatures and unexplained occurrences.

Nestled on the outskirts of Raven's Peak was a cozy, rustic house, surrounded by tall trees and a sprawling backyard.

The house had a natural stone exterior, with a wraparound porch and a metal roof. The porch would creak when you would step on it and the wooden swing swayed gently in the breeze.

A thirty-eight year old woman was making pancakes, humming softly to the song that emanated from the radio that sat on the counter.

"Boys! Are you ready yet? You've got ten minutes!" She called out.

In the hallway, in one of the bedrooms, a sixteen year old boy was putting some books in his backpack. He was wearing a dark blue shirt, white jeans and golden Nikes. He zipped up his bag and yelled in surprise when a pair of arms wrapped around him and he laughed as he was picked up from behind.

"Fallon! Put me down!" He exclaimed, kicking his legs. Fallon grinned and he dropped his brother on the bed, "sorry, baby bro. Couldn't resist."

Phelan glared at him and he growled softly before he glomped his brother with a triumphant laugh. The two laughed as they sat down on the bed. Fallon ruffled his brother's hair, making him whine and he swatted at his hand.

Phelan smiled as Fallon snickered. "My little brother going to school," he chuckled, "and leaving me alone."

Phelan rolled his eyes, "this isn't my first day, dummy. And you work at McKinney's Garage." "True," Fallon drawled with an innocent smile before he got up and walked to the door, "but it would be nice to go to school again."

Phelan smiled and he shook his head before he picked up his backpack and he slung it over his shoulders as he followed Fallon out of his room. The two walked into the living room and their mom, Summer, smiled at them.

"There you two are," she chuckled as she gave them their lunches, "I'm going to be heading out grocery shopping soon. I'll drop you off at work, Fallon." "Okay, Ma," Fallon chuckled as they walked out of the house. Phelan closed his eyes with a smile and he looked at the bicycle that was parked up next to the car.

He turned and hugged his mom, "I'll see you after school."

She hugged him back with a smile. Fallon smiled as he walked over and hugged them. Summer smiled softly before she pulled away and walked to the car. Phelan got on his bike and he started pedaling. He waved at his mom and brother and he went to school.

Fallon smiled softly and he sighed. Summer chuckled as she started driving. Phelan pedaled over to the school. There were students all around, excitedly chatting. He ran over to a raven-haired girl, "hey, Tala!"

She looked at him and smiled, "hey, Phelan! Finally out of bed?" "For your information, I've been out of bed and getting myself ready!" He huffed, crossing his arms.

Tala chuckled softly and she shook her head, "riiiiight." Phelan swatted at her arm as the two walked inside.

There were so many students. Some were saying hi to Phelan. The boy smiled and waved at them. Tala chuckled, "quite the popular guy, aren't you?" "You know my brother used to go to school here when I was younger," Phelan replied with a smile.

"Yeah," Tala chuckled, "that's true but who am I to deny it?" Phelan rolled his eyes. He had almost grown used to following his brother's lead when he first enrolled into Raven Peak's High School, or RPHS for short. It was a cozy, close-knit school and Phelan was a junior and so was Tala.

Phelan looked around before he yelped as he bumped into someone. The boy looked at him, raising an eyebrow. He was 6'4, and he had light honey brown skin, coffee brown hair and gray hair and dark brown eyes

"S-sorry," Phelan stammered, looking up at him only to freeze when their eyes met. Tala looked at Phelan then the boy shrugged.

"You're good," he replied before he walked away. "Who was that?" Phelan asked, furrowing his eyebrows, earning a shocked look from his friend.

"You really don't know who that is?" She asked. "The whole 'where everyone knows everyone's names' schtick doesn't really hold as much as it should," Phelan chuckled, raising an eyebrow.

"That's Timber Fry," Tala huffed, "he's the captain of the football team. And to the teachers, he seems to have a decent bone in his body. But he's a jerk." "How exactly is he a jerk?" Phelan asked.

Tala shrugged, "that's what I hear the girls say. They've asked him out and every time, he's rejected them." "Maybe he doesn't have a type," Phelan shrugged. The bell rang and everyone started going to class.

Phelan walked into English History and took a seat by the window. Other students started filling in the room and once class started, Phelan found most of his attention being drawn to the window. He looked outside and his eyes widened when he saw a wolf staring at him.

Phelan stared back at it.

"Mister Best?"

He jumped and looked back at the teacher. She furrowed an eyebrow, "is everything alright?" "Y-yes... sorry," he replied quickly. He looked back at the window and fidgeted nervously.

"Right...," the teacher hummed, "we're going on a trip tomorrow and you'll all be doing an assignment for it."

"What's the assignment?" One student asked. "And where are we going?" Another questioned, tilting his head.

"Camping in the forest," the teacher replied, "you all will be studying flora and fauna."

Phelan smiled at that. Hopefully the trip would calm his anxious mind.
