Chapter 3: Spirit's beginning
Spirit's POV
I am ashamed to have Midnight Heart see me cry. I like people to see me as tough but I guess Midnight Heart knows the truth. I slowly look up again Midnight Heart is looking at me with a hurt look on her face. "I'm sorry Spirit" She starts to apologize "I shouldn't have been so mad with you. I found out which book you burned and I don't need it. I want you to know that your the only pony I have ever cared about. I need your friendship. I have never wanted a friend but it turns out I never have someone who is a little like me." She stops looking at me uncertainly. "Oh Midnight heart I've wanted you as my friend ever since I met you. When you got mad at me I thought my hopes were doomed." I start to feel better. Maybe this will turn out good after all. Midnight heart looks at me and then her eyes widen as she notices my cutie mark. "When did you get your Cutie mark!" she exclaims "And what is it, a lantern?" she looks at me puzzled. I am nervous to tell her, what if she thinks it's gross and doesn't want to be my friend anymore. "W-well it's a lantern wi-with a soul inside. You see my moms soul visited me last night and I got it" I look to see her reaction "That totally rocks. You have the coolest cutie mark ever." "What does your cutie mark mean." I ask curiously. Her cutie mark is a heart broken in two and getting sewn back together. "My cutie mark allows me to make people love me and then they do what I want" She answers. what if that's what she is doing with me. She must have seen my expression because she said "Don't worry I am not doing that with you I actually like you. Together we could make a pretty good team." I look at her "Do you give me permission to live here. I really want to live in the woods." "Of course you can, why would I say no. Just build wherever you want." She looks around. "By the looks of it you were already starting to plan." There were a couple lanterns on one of the trees and the ground had scratches where I had started to plan my house. "Well I thought maybe you would let me live here so I started." I wanted to start as soon as possible and get the house done so I would have a roof over my head

Midnight's POV
I think I can build her a house with my magic I'll ask her. "Would you like me to help you with your house? I can help with my magic" "Of course Midnight Heart." "Oh please, call me Midnight that's what my friend calls me." We start to giggle and laugh "Now lets get this house built." I use my magic to pick up supplies. It starts to spin around and a yellow circle spins faster and faster before disappearing and standing there is a cute little house. There is a tree in the front yard which Spirit had already hung some lanterns on, I help her move in and get her some furniture before leaving to go home. That night as I snuggle down into my covers I realize that this is the first night I have gone to bed with a real friend. I woke up in the middle of the night after a peaceful rest. My heart is still fluttering at the thought of having a friend. I look out the window at the semicircle moon. I slowly walk out of my room and down the stairs. I am still tired and might end up going back up to bed. After I get to the kitchen I make myself a cup of coffee. As I drink my mind starts to clear from tiredness. After the mug is empty I walk back into the foyer and stop, Astonished. There hovering in the middle of the foyer is a blue orb. I recognize it as a soul, it looks just like the ones in Spirits lanterns. Spirit had been busy and she had quite a collection now. I look at the soul wondering if it is going to move but is just floats in the same position. I need to get to Spirit and fast so that she can take it away. I exit out the door and stare at the gloominess of the forest. As I walk I see a couple strange creatures hid under a bush. I use my magic to see where I am going. I start to gallop and dodge around trees and plow through bushes. I finally reach Spirit's house and tap on the door waiting for her to open the door.

Spirit's POV
"Aww." I wake up, was I just imagining it. No, there it was again someone was knocking on the door. I don't want to leave the warmness of my bed but the knocking starts to annoy me. I slowly get out of my bed and find the door. I open the door and there is Midnight she looks worried and tired. "Oh hi Midnight Aww." I yawn again. "Hi Spirit I need you to come to my castle and help me." She pauses catching her breathe. "There is a soul floating in my foyer and it isn't moving could you bring a lantern and take it." I Look at her in amazement. Why would a soul leave the shadows of a forest. They usually didn't move that much and couldn't be seen unless wanted to be but if you have the talent I have you can see them whenever you want. "I am coming just let me grab an empty lantern." I walk over to the closet and grasp the handle of one. "Follow me." Midnight says running out the door. I follow her trying to keep up with her. I can't run fast at night since I am am partly blind and might bump into something. We arrive at her castle breathless. She opens the door and I walk in. I trip on her step and fall on my face. The lantern falls and shatters. I stare in dismay now I have nothing to put the soul in. Midnight says "I can run back and get another one you just stay and talk to this soul." She run out leaving me with it. I look at it watching the blue swirls spin. "Spirit night." A voice calls out. I look up the soul is right in front of me. "Mother?" I look in surprise "Why have you returned?" "Spirit night you have done well with your talent and I am ready to be taken in a lantern." It starts to glow brighter and I realize that I have My markings casting strange shadows on the wall. "Are you sure? You could stay free I might not feel right taking my mothers freedom." I'm not sure I want her soul in a lantern. "Spirit I would not came to you if I was not sure. It is a souls destiny to be put in a lantern and I have been free for to lone." The soul drifts around my head "I would be pleased to be in my daughters possession." The door opens and in comes Midnight. "I have the lantern." The handle is in her mouth. She came and opened the little door and the soul moves into the lantern. I start to feel emotions rise up in me. A tear falls and Midnight looks at me queerly. "What is wrong Spirit?" She asks softly. "Oh nothing it's just that that's my moms soul and she came to ask me to let her be in one of my lanterns." I stop and pick up the lantern. I open the door and walk back out into the forest. Using the lantern to see I make my way beck to my house. I hang the lantern on a hook above my bed. "Thank you mom for letting me feel close to you." I sigh before going back to sleep. The lanterns stop glowing like they do every night so I can fall asleep.
