Chapter One: The Project

"Students, we have an exciting opportunity for everyone! We've been given the opportunity to send all of you back in time to a place of your choosing! The details are still being worked out, but you will be there for a two week time period. We will tell you all more information once we know about it. Now. Please open your history books to page 160, and we will continue Monday's lesson on the Great War." Kenna's HIST 100 professor droned on. However, her words grabbed Kenna's attention. Looking down at her knee, which constantly gave her pain ever since she was in a car wreck with her brother, she knew she might have a way to find some way to make it better. Who could she go to though? Einstein? No, she didn't feel like he could give her what she needed. Hippocrates of Kos? Maybe... then it dawned on her. Most of her friends were Christian. They had talked her into going to church, where she had heard about this guy named Jesus. According to the Christians, He was a healer. He healed the sick and the lame. Thinking about meeting Him made her stomach drop a little bit in anticipation. Even if He couldn't heal her, what was the harm in meeting the guy? It couldn't be that bad, right?
"Kenna! Kenna!" Her friend poked her side, pulling her out of her daydream.
"What Maddie?!"
"Class is over! We can leave!"
"Oh."
Slowly standing, silently begging her joint to move, she held onto the back of her desk until she was sure her knee would hold her weight. Even four years later, and with three bouts of physical therapy after two surgeries, her knee hadn't gotten better. Chronic pain and stiffness left her mobility on that leg pretty limited. Taking her backpack from her friends hand, who had bent down to grab it for her since it would be quicker, she pulled it over her shoulders before clipping the straps in front. That way if she were to fall, she wouldn't have to try and get it back on her back. Slowly moving out of the classroom, she smiled to herself at the thought of someone who might be able to take the pain away. They made their way to the colleges cafeteria, where they met up with several other friends.
"Did you guys hear about the project?" Tabby, her friend asked.
"Yeah, how did you?"
"It's open to all students if they want to do it. It's supposed to help us understand humanity better apparently. Who are you guys gonna go see?"
"I'm gonna meet Churchill." Zach, one of the three boys said.
"I'm gonna meet Florence Nightingale." Savannah, a nursing major stated.
"I wanna meet Socrates." Tabby said, always the philosopher.
"I wanna meet Paul." Maddie stated.
"Paul?" Tabby looked confused.
"Yeah, like Paul as in Jesus's friend Paul." Maddie smiles.
Everyone around the table smiles.
"Yo, I didn't even think about that, I'm ditching meeting McArthur I wanna meet Moses!" Shawn, the second boy exclaimed.
Murmurs went around the table listing off random Bible stories, until most of them had changed their minds and were planning on going to meet the hero's they had learned about growing up.
"What about you, Kenna?" Maddie asked.
"I've lived with chronic pain for four years. The way I see it, I've got a shot at finding answers. I'm taking my shot, weather I believe it or not." Kenna said, kinda vaguely. "Worst case scenario they can't help me and I've met some really cool people."
"But who?" Sailor, the last boy spoke up.
"Jesus Christ from the Bible. My best option is to see if He can help me. I mean, if He can I would like to be able to use my leg again" she kinda rambled.
All the others at the table that day looked at each other with wide eyes. They were all Christians, and they all knew Kenna was on the fence.
"Kenna, I'll come with you." Sailor quietly spoke.
"Why?" She asked, genuinely wondering, as he hadn't mentioned a person either.
"Because I got diagnosed with cancer last night. If anyone can fix it, He can."
Everyone froze, not expecting that news.
This might turn out to be a very interesting project after all.
