Chapter Seventeen - Fear

John's POV

They walked through the tunnels in silence. John felt weaker on every step he took. As he kept on walking, he could hear whispering through his mind. The whispering grew louder as they get closer to the Wyrm. He kept on seeing images of the Many and the Wyrm. He shook his head, his vision clearing a bit.

He looked at Eilene who still looked spooked. He knew that she was not all right. He knew that she was scared ever since they got here. She was scared ever since she saw the Many and she still looked shaken. He couldn't understand why she always kept on acting, kept on lying when he just wanted to help her. He couldn't take it anymore, he's losing his patience.

"Okay that's it," John spoke up, "Eilene, what's wrong?"

Eilene seemed to be taken aback from the question, "W-What?"

Wait a minute. Eilene never stutters. She rarely stutters.

"You stuttered," John pointed out, "Eilene what's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong," Eilene mumbled.

"We all know that is not true," John said, "Ever since we got stuck in this cave, you've been jumpy. Ever since you saw the Many you've been shaken that you jump at every sound. I can see it, Eilene, I can see that you're scared."

"I'm not scared," she insisted.

"Eilene, i'm sick of being lied to," John exclaimed, "Can't you tell the truth for once? Why do you keep lying that you're all right when you're not? Why do you keep refusing our help when you need it? What are you so afraid of? Are you scared of the dark because you don-"

"I'm not scared of the dark, okay?" Eilene cut in, "I'm...I'm scared of the deep..."

Everyone looked at her, waiting for her to continue.

"I'm scared of the deep," she went on, "Because it's just so far away from what comforts me the most. The stars. Ever since I heard of the Wyrm from my father, I knew that I would be scared the second I see it. Knowing the Wyrm is underground, I've never been more scared."

John's hand clutched his arm, knowing that the small parasite was slowly making its way up till his forehead. And when it reaches his forehead, he becomes one of those creatures that Eilene fears the most.

Eilene sighed, "I guess I always lie because I didn't want anyone to worry. I didn't want to hurt anyone. But I see now that a lie hurts more than the truth."

"Hey, it's okay to be scared," John said, "Just promise me you won't lie anymore. Just tell the truth and only the truth."

"Yes dad," Eilene replied, partly joking, "Only the truth."

As they kept walking again, for once John had forgotten about the parasite, as if the parasite wasn't there.

Zoey's POV

Zoey groaned, her head aching so badly. She opened her eyes and spotted the others stirring as well. They had managed to stay on the canoe. She looked up to see the waterfall and gasped. The waterfall was very tall. Like very, very tall.

"Way to go for being careful, Jef," Zoey said, wincing.

"The important thing is that everyone's alive and we have the medal," Shen told them.

"Now let's get out of here," Jef added.

They finally reached the military camp and spotted General Tai waiting for them in the clearing.

"I'm glad you came back safely," General Tai said, "Now it's time to say your farewells for my soldiers are needed."

"Wait, before we go," Irene said, "Can we see that book where you read about Shai Lu Man?"

"Yes of course," Shen said, "Follow me. We have a spare copy just in case."

Riley and Irene followed Shen to get the book. Zoey walked over to Jef who had been looking closely at the medal.

"Feel any strange powers or something?" Zoey asked.

"Nope," Jef answered, "But there is this picture of stars."

Zoey looked at the medal as well and saw a couple of stars on it as well. As she squinted closer, she could see two small words on the medal. Before she could read, Irene and Riley came back with a book.

"You guys need to check this out," Irene said, opening a page.

They all gathered around her as Irene pointed to a page where there was a picture of stars. Zoey took the medal from Jef and placed it beside the picture, moving it until the picture in the book and the medal were aligned perfectly.

"That's a constellation," Shen whispered.

"What's the constellation called?" Riley asked.

"Ursa Major," Shen answered, "The Great Bear."

Zoey gasped. Is the constellation, Ursa Major, somehow related to Ursala the Great Bear and her talisman?

I love it when history gets all mysterious!
