Chapter Five - Tracking it Down
Zoron's POV
"The talisman should be somewhere around here," Zoron muttered, following the compass.
They had entered the Evertree's huge roots and were trying to track down the talisman. The path became more complicated as more roots came into view. Hope even tripped a few times.
"Why did this compass have to be in somewhere so hard to get?" Meilin muttered.
"Nothing down here is ever easy," Takoda replied.
George and Haley were engaged in a conversation. They've grown much closer ever since they first met. Eilene had been much more silent, her face deep with concentration. Zoron wondered what she was thinking about.
"Where is this compass?" Zoron muttered in frustration.
"Zoron, stop," Hope immediately pulled him back by his arm.
Zoron looked down and saw a tiny, circular object that he didn't spot. He could've stepped on it if Hope hadn't stopped him just in time. He bent down and picked it up.
He examined it and realized that it was another compass, pointing another way. He looked at the compass they had now and it had changed direction, pointing the same way the other compass did. When he turned both compasses, their were drawings of stars that were in a certain position.
Meilin's POV
"It's another compass," Zoron was saying, "And there seemed to be some drawings of stars behind them."
Meilin glanced around and spotted something glint in a darker area of the roots. She glanced back at them and saw that they were too focused on the compass. She quietly slipped away and walked towards the shining thing.
"It's the constellation of Ursa Major," Eilene was explaining, "That means the Great Bear."
Meilin walked closer to the shining thing and it began to form into the shape of a circle.
"Didn't you say that when Ursala somehow died," Hope asked, "Stars formed into a constellation of a bear?"
Meilin saw that it was another circular object and she bent down to pick it up.
"Yes and they named that constellation, Ursa Major," Eilene answered.
Meilin examined it and realized it was a third compass. It seemed to be pointing to the same direction as the other compasses.
"So does that mean," George asked, "That the Great Bear, Ursala, became a constellation?"
On the other side, there were also drawings of stars. Probably Ursa Major.
"That might be a reason," Eilene replied, "but it doesn't really say in the book."
Meilin quickly rushed back to the others, almost tripping over a root.
"Guys, check out what I found," Meilin said and handed the compass to Eilene.
Her eyes widened in surprise, "Another compass?"
Irene's POV
They have finally reached Eura and were following a trail going to a city that Vhon didn't mention. Whenever they asked which city they were going to, he would simply reply, "You'll see."
Irene still hadn't trusted this guy. He somehow knew that Eilene was still alive and he knew many things that he wasn't telling them. Not only that, he was quite annoying, mostly to her. He'd always try to talk to her or keep bothering her. It took all her self-control not to punch him.
They walked on quietly. Ivan and Riley were in a conversation while Jef and Zoey were whispering then casting mischevious glances at Ivan and Riley. Shane was with the kids who summoned Great Beasts, talking to Abeke.
Irene looked ahead where Vhon was and he had led them out of the forest. In the middle of the clearing stood a huge, stone city. Irene gasped in realization.
"Welcome to the City of Gaundor," Vhon announced.
"Gaundor?" Irene exclaimed, then she narrowed her eyes at him, "You knew we've been here before. You knew why we've been here. That's why you didn't tell us. What else are you hiding?"
"All the answers will be revealed," Vhon replied, "Nothing bad will happen. If something bad does happen, I haven't planned it."
The Keepers exchanged reluctant looks as they followed Vhon into the city. This city held many bad memories. It was the city where John and George's father betrayed them to work for the Conquerors. The city where they had to give up the talismans in order to save Eilene. In the end, it was just another trick the Eilene had played on them. No wonder she recovered quickly. Now they're here to find the talisman because Eilene told them to.
As they entered the city, the guards tensed when they approached but when they saw Vhon with them, they relaxed and didn't stop them as they went in. Vhon kept on leading them until they stopped in front of a huge palace. Right on top of the stairs, leading to the door was the Lord of Gaundor. He was an older version of John and George. He looked at them with a hint of nervousness but he gave them a welcoming smile.
"Greetings Greencloaks-" the Lord of Gaundor was about to start when he notices something, "Where are my sons and the rest of the Keepers?"
"Why are you welcoming us all of a sudden when the last time we met, you said Greencloaks aren't welcomed here anymore?" Ivan questioned suspiciously, "Why are we even here?"
The Lord of Gaundor sighed, "Believe me, you don't know how much I regretted it, but it was for your own good. It was the only way to keep you safe."
Irene looked at him suspciously, not believing every word he just said.
"I promise," he went on, "All the answers will be revealed."
"Why are we here?" Riley asked this time.
He hesitated, then spoke, "Because I am a Dream Bringer."
