Chapter One - Keepers Everywhere

A retelling of The Ten Keepers: Book One's Prologue and Chapters 1-4

The Prologue

Olvan's POV

It was a typical day at Greenhaven, (location: Erdas, fanfiction: Spirit Animals). Everything was... alright, if we were to put this mildly. Except the Four Fallen were suddenly summoned as Spirit Animals a few weeks ago and were currently trying to find Arax the Ram but other than that-

-everything was honestly fine! I mean, it could be much worse-

An ominous set of knocks interrupted Olvan's train of thought as Lenori walks in, a serious look on her face.

"Olvan."

"Lenori...?" The leader of the Greencloaks slowly replied, his eyebrow raised.

There was a dramatic pause. And then-

"I had a dream."

"That's... nice," he responded hesitantly. "Was it a nice dream?"

"Well, actually," Lenori tries again, "It's a... it's another prophetic dream-"

A pause.

"For the love of Tellun-"

Keepers in Amaya

Zoron's POV

The clues for the prophetic dream starts off in Amaya, specifically to a set of siblings preparing for their Nectar Ceremony.

And you must be wondering: but author, unless they're twins, how can the older sibling have their ceremony without the risk of getting bonding sickness?

And here I finally address such loopholes officially: Just roll with it. We need wholesome sibling vibes.

Zoron was fixing his hair as he finally prepared himself for his own Nectar Ceremony, and for plot purposes, he waited an entire year- risking Bonding Sickness -just so he could share it with his younger sister... because that's totally what siblings do.

Zoey suddenly barged into his room, loudly yelling, "HOW MUCH LONGER ARE YOU GONNA FIX YOUR HAIR?"

"Holy Haliwir, sis," Zoron hissed, almost having a heart attack, "I'm done! I'm done!"

"Finally!" Zoey cheered, dragging him out of his room and into the clearing where everyone else was gathered for the Nectar Ceremony, "Let's get this ceremony over with so I can finally summon my Spirit Animal who I can be best friends with for life and death!"

"Sounds about right," Zoron muttered, looking around nervously as the Nectar Ceremony finally begins.

"We are gathered together on this very sunny day," Daysun said, the Greencloak emceeing the Nectar Ceremony. "And today, we're gonna witness some hearts bond and hearts break so let's get this started folks!"

And indeed hearts did break as two random children, who joined them for the ceremony, sipped their nectars and didn't get a Spirit Animal. Now it was Zoey's turn, and like the wholesome older sibling he is, Zoron began strongly manifesting for her to get a Spirit Animal.

"Zoey," Daysun said, for the umpteenth time, "Get yo Nectar of Ninani, gurl <3."

The siblings exchange an odd glance. Then Zoey takes a chug outta that ne- I mean, she only took a sip. She didn't chug. She sipped.

Then out from a blinding flash of light, a white rabbit came hopping out of nowhere and towards Zoey, who automatically kneeled down to pet it. Everyone watched in awe, including Zoron, until Zoey squeals-

"I'm ABSOLUTELY gonna name you Chloe!"

Zoron pats Zoey's shoulder supportingly, "That's great, lil sis."

"Don't you think it's a great name?"

"It's a great name, sis."

"Zoron, your turn," Daysun said, handing him the nectar, "No pressure or anything but I sorta got an appointment right after this so if you could..."

"oH! Oh, of course," Zoron says before sipping the Nectar.

A pang of nostalgia hits him like a wave as he gets a taste of his favorite dish, holding the same taste specifically cooked by his own mother. No one ever really got close to the formula his mother used, and it's been so long since he's had it. He swallowed down the nectar along with a wave of grief, cherishing the taste for as long as he could.

Oh right, and then a gyrfalcon flew out of nowhere and landed on Zoron's shoulder.

Zoey whooped, punching his shoulder, "Cool bird, bro!"

"That's a gyrfalcon," Daysun pointed out, his expression deadpan.

"But... I mean, that's not supposed to be possible?" Zoron squeaked, only to wince in pain as the gyrfalcon pecked him.

"Oh but it is." A new voice enters the fray, and it's none other than Olvan because duty calls whenever Lenori gets prophetic dreams. "Olvan, Commander of the Greencloaks. You kids just fulfilled a prophecy so... I'm gonna take you away to Greenhaven."

"You're taking away my kids?!" Their father screeched, coming out of nowhere like a Spirit Animal.

"They fulfilled a prophecy," Olvan repeated, like that explained everything.

"And?!"

"And it's a very important prophecy. One that involves the fate of Erdas as a whole," Olvan elaborates, adapting a reassuring tone, "Rest assured, your children will be safe and sound and will ABSOLUTELY come back to you, completely alive and breathing, after the end of all of this!"

"...and?"

"...and you will be compensated very well."

"I completely understand now, I trust you'll take care of my kids," their father said before disappearing from the entirety of this trilogy.

"Cool," Olvan turns to Zoron and Zoey, "Shall we go?"

Zoron and Zoey exchange a look before shrugging. Zoron snorted, "Like we have a choice."

"A fair point."

Hope's POV

Meanwhile, Hope was having her Nectar Ceremony with her best friend, Kate, because she didn't have siblings she needed to wait a year for. And some vital background information for potential characterization, Hope's parents died from a sickness so her grandfather was taking care of her.

Cara, the Greencloak of their village, was chatting it up with a tall, buff man with a beard.

"Sorry for the delay, everyone," Carla finally said, "Let's get started! Kate, receive the nectar!"

Kate received the nectar. She didn't receive a Spirit Animal. Get rekt.

Cara, looking at Hope curiously, gave her the nectar, "Receive the nectar, um... Kate?"

"Hope."

"Hope! Sorry. Sorry."

Hope received the nectar. She tasted her favorite drink which waaaaaaaas something sweet. One blinding flash later and a horse gallops out of nowhere and towards Hope.

"Oh my Tellun, gurl!" Kate exclaimed before hugging Hope, "Congrats bestie!"

Hope laughed, "Thanks!"

They're interrupted by the tall buff Greencloak with the beard, a solemn look on his face as he goes to face Hope.

"Greetings Kate. My name is Olvan, leader of the Greencloaks," the man said. "You have just fulfilled a prophecy and I believe Erdas needs you."

A pause.

Kate coughed, "Her name's, um, actually Hope, sir- I'm Kate..."

Olvan blinks at Kate, then back at Hope. "Oh... Oh! Well, um, this is awkward."

"It's okay-"

"Well I deeply apologize, Hope-"

"No really sir-"

"-after saying all that, I feel awkward repeating it-"

"I completely understand-"

"Let's," Olvan finally said, "Let's just pretend that didn't happen."

"Can do, sir."

Keepers in Nilo

Ivan's POV

"Dude."

"Dude."

"Duuuude."

"Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude."

"DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!" Jef yelled.

Ivan sucks in a deep breath before- "DUUUUUUUU-"

"QUIT YOUR YAMMERING BEFORE I BRING OUT MY SLIPPERS!" Jef's mother yelled from the room beside theirs. "For Cabaro's sake, get going to your Nectar Ceremony!"

Ivan and Jef snickered as they finally entered the clearing where everyone else would have the ceremony. Some important background information: they're both cousins born around the same time, and their fathers died exactly at the same time during a hunting accident. Now they're having their Nectar Ceremony, at the same time.

Because wholesome familial bonds.

Nuka, the village Greencloak- who absolutely does not have a brother named Kovo or a sister named Vitani or a mother named Zira... or maybe he did, we'll never know -boredly stood around, waiting to start the ceremony. There was another foreign Greencloak there, she was a woman, you'll find out.

"Jef, receive the Nectar of Ninani," Nuka said flatly.

Jef sipped that nectar and a cheetah came bounding out of nowhere and everyone was so shocked because holy Cabaro people could actually summon Spirit Animals?!

"Duuuuuuude," Jef whispered, grinning at Ivan."

"POG," Ivan whispered back and they exchange a fist bump.

"Ivan," Nuka interrupted, "[copy-paste]."

Ivan cocked his head, "What?"

"[ctrl-c]. [ctrl-v]."

Ivan warily took the nectar from him and took a sip. And there he tasted the very same meat his father died to hunt for. It was a very memorable dinner because of the circumstances and damn that's focking morbid so I'll just stop there-

Then a leopard pops out of nowhere and everyone goes into shook.

"My name is Ella," the foreign woman Greencloak said, also coming out of nowhere. "And both of you just fulfilled a prophecy. So... Erdas needs you."

Silence.

"Dudeeeee," the cousins whispered, looking at each other with wide eyes before simultaneous yelling:

"POG!"

Keepers in Zhong

Riley's POV

Riley, also known as Not-Meilin, currently sat in front of a fancy looking mirror inside a fancy looking room because her father was a very highly-decorated Zhongese warrior. Her father is NOT a general (I think, maybe that changes later on in the story we'll see). I don't know why I made so many single parents but I did, so Riley's mother ALSO died.

Anyway, a servant comes knocking at her door, "Madame, mistress, lady, Riley. It is time for your Nectar Ceremony."

"Thank you... servant 356," Riley replied, albeit awkwardly.

The servant escorts her out of her fancy looking home and into the streets until she reached the place where they'll hold the Nectar Ceremony. You know the drill: crowds were gathered, and Gordon was the emceeing Greencloak. He was chatting it up with a female Greencloak, which is super important to take note of.

"It is high time that we start this ceremony," Gordon announced once Riley was there 'cause she was clearly super important. Then he approached Riley, "Not-Meilin, receive the Nectar of Ninani."

Riley received her Nectar of Ninani, tasted some really yummy rice balls, which might seem weird when you're drinking liquid only to taste rice balls, but that's what the Nectar of Ninani actually does. Blinding flash of light and out comes a cool-looking fox and everyone claps for Not-Meilin 'cause damn she's so fancy.

Then some random Zhongese soldier ruins the mood, "Jano Rion and every other focking city in this country has fallen we're all gonna die!"

"Someone shut that man up!" General Tai barked out, the sort of de facto general for that city. "All Zhongese soldiers will stay in this city until every single one of our citizens have evacuated."

"Riley," she looked up to find her father rushing towards her. "It's gonna be okay. I'll see you later, alright?"

"If I may interrupt this apparently angsty moment," the foreign Greencloak woman cuts in, "I'm Lenori and your daughter just fulfilled a prophecy so-"

"You'll be taking her away?" Her father cuts in. "Well, she'll be safer in Greenhaven, I suppose."

"But this is my home, I must defend it," Riley argued.

"You'll be saving the whole of Erdas if you join us," Lenori said.

Her father shrugged, "She's kinda got a point. Defender of Erdas screams more bragging rights than Defender of Zhong. Trust me, your mother would be proud of you from the grave."

Riley considered this before nodding, "Very well then, father. I'll make you so proud, you'd be bragging about your daughter, Defender of Erdas."

"That's the spirit!"

Irene's POV

Meanwhile, Irene and her Greencloak father, Sam, were currently jogging through the bamboo forest. Behind them, Conqueror soldiers were chasing them but they knew these forests more than the enemy, so it barely differed from their morning jogs. And like all the other Ten Keepers, her mother also died.

"This is a good spot to rest," Sam commented as they stop at a spot.

Conqueror soldiers quite literally ran past them, without ever seeing the father-daughter duo.

"Amateurs," Sam scoffed before taking out his supply of nectar and giving it to Irene, "Wanna do your Nectar Ceremony while we're at it?"

Irene shrugged, "Sure, dad."

"I'm sorry you couldn't have a proper ceremony."

"Nah, are you kidding? This is the best one yet!" Irene exclaimed, grinning at him. "Honestly, these Nectar Ceremonies were starting to get repetitive."

"That's exactly what I was thinking!" Sam said before mockingly-ceremoniously offering her the nectar, "My daughter, receive the Nectar of Ninani."

Irene took a sip and tasted some very yummy, fried fish balls. Then a giant panda came out of nowhere.

Irene grinned, "Oh, neat! I got a panda."

A pause.

Irene's eyes widened, "I got a panda?!"

"Holy Dinesh," Sam whispered, exchanging a look with his daughter, "We need to get you to Greenhaven, ASAP."

They began jogging to Greenhaven, completely passing by the group of Conquerors who were still chasing an invisible prey.

Keepers in Eura

John's POV

John couldn't believe it, he couldn't stay calm because-

"Finally," John monologues, "I've waited for this moment... my legendary comeback... my-"

"Our Nectar Ceremony," George butts in. "That you literally waited a year for, I get it. You don't need to keep reminding me."

"I was gonna say 'my point of view', George, let me have my moment!" John scolded.

George only snorted in amusement but let's his older brother have his fun. Their mom died- surprise, surprise! -and their father was the Duke of Gaundor, so their ceremony was kind of a big deal, not to brag.

"Boys," their father called, "Are you ready?"

"I was-"

"I was born ready!" George interrupted, cheekily grinning at him.

John sighed in exasperation before pulling his little brother's neck and messing up his hair, "I can't believe I waited a year to share THIS day with my annoying. Little. Brother!"

When they left the house and entered the crowded clearing, George's hair was a mess of blonde hair. John would've snickered if it weren't for the fact that George was glaring daggers at him. Dila, Gaundor's main Greencloak, was talking to a male Greencloak we've never seen before and will know in a couple of moments.

Probably some Greencloak recruiter, John thought very haughtily, because who wouldn't watch us get our spirit animals?

Dila approached them, "Today, we celebrate the Nectar Ceremony of the sons of Gaundor!"

"Sons of lord Gaundor!"

"Dibs on the older one."

"They're so hot!"

"Quit it, Teressa!"

Dila hands the nectar to George, "George, son of lord Gaundor, receive the Nectar of Ninani."

John watched as George took a sip and from out of nowhere, a lynx came to him. Everyone cried in awe and amazement because it's the polite thing to do when someone of high-status gets a spirit animal. Now everyone's eyes turned to John, who bathed in the attention because he's only been waiting for this moment for a year!

"John, son of lord Gaundor, received the Nectar of Ninani."

The first thing John tastes is... um, some yummy Euran dish that he really liked. Real good stuff. Then a wolf came out of nowhere and jumped over to him and everyone gasped in shock because that's the typical thing to do when someone summons a spirit animal they weren't supposed to summon.

Beside him, George swears, "Holy m-"

"Language," John interrupts.

"-ulop. Holy Mulop, oh Great Octopus have mercy on my foul mouth."

The foreign Greencloak recruiter walks up to them, "Hey, I'm Eric. You two have just fulfilled a prophecy and Erdas needs you."

The brother exchange a look before John said, "Damn, quite the slogan you got there."

"This isn't an advertising campaign," Eric elaborated. "You actually did just fulfill a prophecy..."

John paused. "Oh."

"Cool!" George grinned, "Best day ever!"

Eilene POV

Finally, we reach the end of this chapter. Eilene's sort of an orphan who lived with an aunt who didn't like her. Mother died, father abandoned her, pretty sad childhood vibes. So, unlike the other characters, she was sad about her day because her life was sad so she wasn't expecting it to get better from sipping nectar.

Eh, she may as well try it out anyway.

"I hope you get a spirit animal," her aunt sneered at her, "So you can finally get out of this house."

Eilene paused at that. Then she walked out the house, now determined to get a spirit animal just so she could get out of that house. Thanks, auntie!

Travis, their village Greencloak, was chatting it up with a foreign Greencloak.

"Okay let's start... Uh you, receive your nectar," Travis said, starting with the first kid down the right.

No animal came as each kid took their turn until it came to Eilene. Travis was seen taking another cup of nectar for her and she took a sip from it. It tasted [insert something sus] then took a step back. Out came a grizzly bear, bumbling its way over to her and Eilene was sort of in awe because she can actually finally leave this place!

"Eilene, was it?" The foreign Greencloak said, "I'm Eric and-"

"I accept or whatever. Let's do this," Eilene interrupted, eager to get out.

"Well, that was easy," Eric mumbled before nodding to her. As he led them out the town, he said, "Oh by the way, you fulfilled a prophecy."

A pause.

"...what?!"
