Shane and Abeke - Friend or Foe

Abeke had always like Shane ever since they first met. But when he betrayed her, her feelings for him disappeared but did it really disappear or is a part of it still hidden in there? Now as they're working together once more to save the world from the Wyrm, Shane tries to bring back what he and Abeke once had.

For those of you who hate Shane and Abeke being together well you don't have to read. This is a book where all ships happen. Takes place after the third book of The Fall of the Beast series, "The Return" so there might be some spoilers.

Abeke's POV

Abeke was out on the deck, leaning on the railings as she watched the whale pull the Redcloak ship. It was already night but she couldn't sleep properly. Her mind was still fixed on the battle and the scene replayed again and again. It was still fresh on her mind.

She could still see Zerif opening the small vial which contains the parasite and throwing it at her. She could still see Uraza jumping in front of her, getting hit by the parasite herself. She could still see how Uraza tried to shake the parasite off but failed and soon her eyes changed, she had grown still. It was still hard for her to believe that she had just lost her Spirit Animal, her best friend, Uraza.

She closed her eyes and tried again to reach for the bond they once had. The bond that wasn't there anymore. She wondered if she would ever be bonded to Uraza ever again. She heard footsteps approached.

She whirled around as she heard his voice, "Still awake?"

Abeke just glared at the masked person. Even though he had saved them many times before, she was still having a hard time trusting him. She had trusted him before only to be betrayed. To her surprise, he took off his mask, showing his crocodilian eyes.

Shane or King sighed, sounding like a sad sigh, "I'm not going to hurt you."

"And i'm not going to believe you," Abeke replied, curtly.

"I understand," Shane replied quietly, "Since I betrayed you and all."

"Ever since I met you, I trusted you," Abeke said, "You were my first true friend. I even stood up for you from the others making it harder for them to trust me. I actually thought you felt the same but I guess I was wrong. You don't know what friendship really is."

Shane sighed sadly and Abeke turned to walk back to her cabin. Then she felt a hand stop her.

"Let go," Abeke muttered.

"No," Shane said firmly, "Not until you listen to what I have to say."

"And what are you going to say?" Abeke snapped, "That you're sorry for betraying me? Well guess what, you're never going to be forgiven. You're lucky Uraza isn't here with me right now or I would've let her eat you up!"

Shane flinched but she kept going, "I wish I was never friends with you in the first place. I wish i've never even met you, you traitor and fake friend-"

"Okay I get it," Shane interrupted, "I deserve it but please just listen to me. Just listen to what I have to say."

Abeke glared at him before pulling her arm away from his grasp. She started walking back inside to her cabin.

"I had no choice okay?" Shane spoke but she kept walking, "My parents died and I was supposed to be the next king of Stetroil. My kingdom was suffering from bonding sickness. My sister was suffering from it and I couldn't just sit there and do nothing."

Abeke stopped but kept her back turned as he went on, "Zerif was there and offered me to drink the Bile which cures the bonding sickness. I... I had to do it for my kingdom. It wasn't Stetroil's fault that the Greencloaks never gave us the Nectar because of the first Devourer. My kingdom was suffering and all I wanted was to be a great king. A true king will do everything to keep his kingdom safe."

"Then why did you have to take over Erdas?" Abeke asked.

"I was only waging war on the Greencloaks because they didn't give us the Nectar and Stetroil had to suffer because of it," Shane replied, "Kovo and Gerathon tricked me into doing it just so they could take over Erdas."

Abeke narrowed his eyes at him, unsure if she should believe him.

"You don't know how much I regretted doing things that I knew was wrong," Shane went on, his voice full of sadness and regret, "I was horrified when they killed my sister. I regretted siding with Zerif, Kovo and Gerathon only to be betrayed in the end. I regretted many things that i've done and I failed to make Stetroil great. But what I regretted most was losing my only, true friend..."

Abeke looked down, unsure on what to say, what to feel.

"And i'm telling the truth this time," Shane went on, "I don't deserve to be forgiven but I promise that i'll do everything to help you. To make things right again."

When Abeke still didn't say anything, Shane sighed, "I understand if you still don't trust me but we're on the same side now. I just wanted to let you know."

He began walking back to his cabin, passing Abeke in the process.

"Wait," Abeke said, hesitantly stopping him by grabbing his arm.

Shane didn't say anything but looked at her.

"I...," she hesitated, "I believe you."

"You... What?" Shane asked, surprised.

"I said I believe you," Abeke repeated, "For now. We're on the same side now and I have to start trusting you if we're going to work together."

Shane's eyes filled with relief.

"Just don't make me regret it," Abeke muttered.

"You won't," Shane promised.

Abeke started walking back but then stopped. She hesitated before turning around and hugging Shane. Shane looked surprise but quickly hugged her back. Abeke herself was surprised she'd done it. Abeke pulled away and their eyes met.

"Er, well good night," Abeke said.

Shane gave her a small smile, "Good night."

Abeke felt herself smiling back before walking back down towards her cabin.

"Looks like you two were having fun," she jumped as she heard a voice.

She saw Rollan walking out the shadows, looking at her in amusement.

"Shut up, Rollan," Abeke muttered and Rollan chuckled.

Shane is definately one of my favorite characters in the series. I had to do a bit of research since I haven't read the Book of Shane. (I can't find the book okay?)
