Rollan and Meilin - I'll Take Care Of You

Things get heated up between Rollan and Meilin. So as punishment, they get to spend the night-shift together and the clouds bring an unexpected storm.

Finally! A Reilin one-shot! By the way, I was having trouble writing the other Reilin one-shot that I was supposed to publish before the Conor and Tasha one so I thought of another one. I'll try to continue the other Reilin one-shot though.

This one-shot was inspired by other one-shots I've read.

"Meilin! Behind you!" Meilin spun around at the sound of Rollan's voice, just in time to see a man about to swing his axe at her.

With her back near a wall and her staff out of reach, she didn't have enough room to dodge this attack. She braced herself to try and grab the axe with her own hands but judging by the man's stance, she could tell he was very experienced. As soon as the axe was about to make contact, someone had tackled the man from behind and reached for the axe.

Rollan.

"I...got this...under...control," Rollan managed to heave out the words as both of them wrestled for the axe.

With quick thinking, Meilin snatched her staff then hit the man right where she knew he wouldn't be waking up for a while.

"Retreat!" The leader of the bandits shout out and soon enough, others have ran away, some carrying the bodies of their former teammates.

"That's the last of them," Abeke spoke as her and Conor walked to join them.

Meilin remembered something then she turned to Rollan with a cold gaze, "I could've fought him on my own, you know."

Rollan scoffed, "We both know that you would've needed a miracle to block that attack."

"And what? You couldn't have trusted me to have done that?" Meilin snapped.

They were both getting clearly annoyed and frustrated with each other.

"Of course I trusted you," Rollan exclaimed, "Heck you're one of the most strongest warriors, even for a young age but you're not immortal."

"I know what I am and what i'm not," Meilin muttered coldly, "I can take care of myself. So next time, leave me alone."

"I can't do that," Rollan told her firmly.

"And why not?" She snapped, glaring at him.

He hesitated but before he could speak, Conor interrupted them in an annoyed tone, "Since you two are clearly having a disagreement, you can continue this during night duty. And both of you are going to work this out at night for i'm not going to listen to anymore of this nonsense."

"But-" Rollan stopped as he saw the look on Conor's face. Even Meilin seemed to think better than to disagree with Conor at the moment.

Rollan sighed as they both sat in silence in front of the campfire. Conor and Abeke were already sleeping inside their tents as Rollan and Meilin had night duty. He glanced at Meilin who had a stony face, focused on the fire.

Rollan was about to speak but had been cut off when a thunder sounded. Soon enough, rain started to pour in, faster and stronger. It had just came out of nowhere and here they were, getting drenched in the rain. Meilin muttered something under her breath as the fire was quickly extinguished.

"Well, this is great," Rollan muttered sarcastically, "At least we get to cool down from that fight earlier."

"Which fight? The one with the bandits or the one with us?" Meilin asked curtly.

"You know what I mean," Rollan mumbled, not exactly caring if his clothes were drenched right now.

Meilin had already wrapped her body with her long green cloak but her head was still exposed to the rain. Even with the cloak, he noticed the slight shivers. He then had an idea and started to remove his cloak.

"What are you doing?" She asked, confused.

Rollan then placed the cloak over her head. Even he knew that you could get down on a cold if you're head wasn't at least covered.

"To answer your question, i'm taking care of you," he replied and tried to suppress the shivering.

"And who'll take care of you?" Meilin asked again.

He only shrugged, "No one ever took care of me. If you haven't remembered, I was born as a street orphan. I took care of myself."

There was silence until Meilin sighed, "Come closer."

He gave her a look, "What?"

"Just come closer before I change my mind," Meilin muttered.

Rollan hesitated before slowly scooting closer towards her that their shoulders were almost touching. She rolled her eyes before making them touch then placed his green cloak so that it was over both of them, sheltering most of the rain from them.

"From now on, that's not going to happen," Meilin murmured quietly.

He only let out a small smile.

"Really, i'll be okay in a-" Rollan coughed before rasping, "Couple of days."

Despite having some shelter from the rain, Rollan went down on a cold, though it wasn't very serious.

"Yeah, keep telling yourself that," Meilin told him sarcastically as she held a warm bowl of soup in her hands.

"I don't want to get you sick," Rollan mumbled as he coughed once more.

"Well, someone's got to take care of you," Meilin said as she gently held out a spoonful of soup to his mouth.

Rollan took a sip before saying, "I can take care of myself."

"I know you can, Rollan," Meilin murmured as she looked at him, "You probably know how to do that with your experience. But sometimes, it's best to let someone else take care of you instead."

"Says the girl who told me to leave her alone," he joked weakly before letting out another cough.

She rolled her eyes, "From now on, i'll be taking care of you, whether your like it or not."

Rollan grinned before replying, "Then it's only fair if I do the same as well."
