Chapter Twenty Four - The Sake of Arax's Horns

"Hey, I need you here. We both need rescuing and this time, both of us are getting out of here."

-Rollan-

"So, I lived in a small village with my grandfather," Grif said as they sat in their prison cells, awaiting for their 'breakfast', "And I summoned Arax."

Rollan nodded at the animal sitting beside him, "The ram."

It had been Rollan's second day in jail, meaning he had one more day of peace left before he loses his head in front of Amaya. He hadn't told Grif anything about Arax being a Great Beast for he needed confirmation if his suspicions are correct.

"Before I summoned him, I had a major headache," Grif went on, "I mean, i've never felt anything like that and I never knew that it could hurt that much."

"A major headache?" Rollan repeated.

He remembered having a major headache when he was trying to steal the Nectar, moments before summoning Essix. The pain had increased as Essix appeared in a bright light.

"It started to hurt even more when Arax appeared," Grif said, echoing his thoughts, "It only disappeared once I touched Arax's horn. I asked some people who summoned Spirit Animals and no one had ever heard of having a huge headache."

"You must've not gotten a good sleep that night," Rollan said but his thoughts were still on his summoning.

Did that mean the others who summoned Great Beasts have also felt a major headache before they summoned them?

"Anyways, my grandpa died and I was forced to go to the orphanage," his tone was angry, "The people there were terrible, teasing me about my height!"

"What about your height?" Rollan asked.

"For the sake of Arax's horns, i'm 14!" Grif exclaimed, much to Rollan's surprise.

Rollan had summoned his Spirit Animal 3 years ago, making him 15 and supposedly, this kid, who he thought was like 9 or 10, was just a year younger than him! Well, he then thought Grif was 12 since he showed his Spirit Animal but 14?!

"Just as I have expected," Grif muttered angrily, "You're shocked."

"Yeah, i'm quite shocked at what you said there," Rollan replied, "Like seriously? 'For the sake of Arax's horns.' Never heard of that before."

"Admit it, you're shocked that i'm 14," Grif grumbled.

"I'm shocked that you didn't tell me," Rollan exclaimed in an exaggerated way, "You should've told me earlier so then I wouldn't have thought of you as some lucky 9 year old who summoned a ram, for the sake of Arax's horns!" He shot back Grif's words.

At this, a smile tugged at the edge of his mouth, much to Rollan's satisfaction, "Yeah, whatever. Though i'd appreciate it if you don't use this as an advantage to-"

"I'm many things," Rollan reassured him, "And that includes me as an ally and possibly a friend. You have my word, Mr. Burnam."

He grunted but Rollan noticed him visibly relax, "Yeah, okay then, Roll. But if you tease me about it, I will make sure you get a taste of what those Greencloaks could've done to you if they caught you."

"Oh, so you mean I get to taste the Nectar?" Rollan joked, "Sweet."

"I'm serious," Grif exclaimed.

"And i'm serious too," Rollan said, "The Nectar is sweet."

"So you've tasted the Nectar before?" Grif asked then shook his head, "Oh yeah, you're the thief who stole a few Nectar supplies. Did you summon a Spirit Animal?"

Rollan started to grow uneasy, not exactly wanting to share that information with him just yet. Luckily, he was saved by breakfast. Well, for now...

"Here's your breakfast," Shaun's voice announced as he and two other soldiers appeared. The cell opened and Shaun set down two bowls of what looked like soup, "Enjoy."

"Soup?" Rollan exclaimed, reaching for the bowl, Grif doing the same, "Never knew this prison could even cook soup."

Shaun smirked, "Yeah, well enjoy the rat stew I made you guys."

Grif immediately spat out the food while Rollan cringed, already having swallowed down what he thought was the 'chicken.'

Shaun chuckled as he walked out the cell and locked it, "Also, this'll be your last breakfast by the way. You're execution has been awaited for so long that they pushed it tomorrow."

So, Rollan takes back what he thought before. His breakfast didn't exactly save him with that foul rat in his stomach. Oh, and the fact that his planned execution is tomorrow.

"Oh Essix, hurry up," Rollan muttered, trying to close his eyes and see through her eyes like he usually did but he he could sense that she was far away from him.

What he did see was Meilin. Beasts, this is getting annoying.

-Rollan-

(A/N: I've decided to write in first person. This part was supposed to be the next chapter but meh)

The day of my supposed execution started off like this...

"Wake up!" I felt my breath knocked out of me as a boot kicked me hard.

I coughed then glanced up to see Shaun. No surprise there.

"Man, what's with you and the hard shoes?" I snapped, "It's not like someone's going to aim at your toes!"

"Of course not," Shaun said, "I just simply didn't want to touch a filthy being like you."

"Hate to break it to you but you technically are one as well," I immediately wished I hadn't said that as he kicked me harder this time.

Just when he seemed as if he was about to hit me again, someone else stopped him, "That's enough, Don."

I looked behind him to see...Shaun. Apparently, this guy was actually Don. Wait, did I mention that they were twins? Well, they are twins.

Don glared at me before muttering, "Get up unless you want to be kicked harder."

"That wouldn't matter anyways since i'm going to die," I mumbled but stood up anyways.

I saw another guard pull Grif up as well at the corner of my eyes, much to my confusion, "Where are you going?"

"To be picked up by his new master of course," the real Shaun said, "He wishes to watch the execution and I figured to have Mr. Burnam here watch you cause you're the only friend he's gonna get."

Perfect, I thought, Essix, you better show up soon.

But even if she did, what would she do? Poop on the guards? Break their eardrums? I could only hope that she brings some help. At that thought, I was suddenly reminded of Meilin...again. Brain, why?

Don then snapped some shackles on my hands, very roughly, the other soldier doing the same to Grif. With Don pushing from behind me and the other guard pushing Grif, we were soon out our cells and walking to my death.

"Look, Roll, you seem like a nice guy," Grif admitted, giving me what looked like a slightly sad look, "I'm quite bummed that the story of the infamous Amayan thief ends here."

"Who said that my story ends here?" I asked.

"I don't recall you being a magician," Grif replied, "but then again, you're full of surprises."

"Plus, who says I still can't be a thief in the Spirit Realm?" I added.

"Wait, you actually believe in that whole bunch of rubbish where people go when they die?" Grif said in disbelief.

"Wait, you actually believe that I actually believed in that whole bunch of rubbish where people go when they die?" I grinned, "I don't believe in the Spirit Realm, Grif."

"For the sake of Arax's horns, how do you stay calm when you're walking to your death?" he exclaimed but the corners of his mouth tugged upwards.

The truth, my heart is actually thudding really hard and fast that i'm surprised that no one could hear it. The only thing I could think of to reassure myself that I wasn't going to die was that Essix was bringing help. Plus, if Zerif's going to be there, there's no way he's going to just sit there when he needs me...

But before I could answer, Don suddenly shoved me really hard that I stumbled forward as Grif was pushed in a different direction.

Don chuckled darkly, "That's enough bonding now. Any last words to your last friend?"

I looked at Grif who was trying to break free from Shaun's grasp. I then tried to speak calmly, giving him a reassuring grin, "See you out there, Grif. You keep on fighting your new master for me, will you?"

He was silent for awhile before a look of respect creeped into his eyes, "You're brave, for a thief."

And that was the last i've seen from Grif Burnam as I went on walking to my death...alone.

BRUH! I'm sorry that it had been like a MONTH since I last updated. I was having a writer's block (which is funny since I already know the plot and ending and stuff, just not the details). This is probably going to turn into a two or three book series so yeah!

So again, SORRY! Kinda...yeah...okay bye!
