Chapter Thirteen - Spies

If you haven't noticed, I change the cover by the way. And this time, I made it myself. (Yey, I can make my own covers now without having to tell it over the phone!)

"I only reveal my real name to those I trust. So, as a fact, I don't trust you."

-Meilin-

"Have you seen that wolf?" Shane was saying.

The group was currently staying inside the cave and were planning to move when it had grown dark. Conor, the boy that had saved them earlier, had left them to go back to his village so there wouldn't be much suspicion.

"Could it be Briggan?" Abeke asked him, "The Great Wolf?"

"It has to be," Tarik nodded, "Only Briggan was described to have cobalt-blue eyes."

"Then who's the summoner?" Lishay asked, "No one was around except for that young boy, Conor..."

Meilin stopped listening for her thoughts wondered back to the boy, Roll. Something flashed into his eyes when she asked why he joined the Conquerors. Something that caused him to get so angry and the reason surely wasn't because of power.

"...Yes, the source must be coming from from the town of Trunswick," Shane's voice broke into her thoughts, "Conor must've been heading for Trunswick as well. We must've been close."

"How are we supposed to find the source who knows about Briggan?" Abeke asked.

"I'm not sure," Shane admitted, "I'm not sure if we should even risk it. It is said that Rumfuss the Boar was there, summoned by Dawson Trunswick, Devin Trunswick's younger brot-"

"Then forget going there," Meilin snapped, "If he's Devin's brother then he and Rumfuss are probably with the Conquerors already. You said no one except for this one source knows of Briggan's whereabouts but what if this is just a bait to lure us into a trap?"

Tarik exchanged a glance with Lishay, "That may be possible..."

"Then that would be two Great Beasts and talismans in their side," Shane argued, "Plus Gerathon and the Jade Serpent, making that three."

"But we can't risk losing them as well," Tarik said, "The Conquerors have made their base there. The Earl of Trunswick has sided with them. If we were to be caught, then that will be five Great Beasts in the Conquerors side. We can't risk it."

"I agree," Lishay nodded with Abeke nodding reluctantly.

Meilin hesitated for the fire hadn't fully died down yet but she knew the more reasonable answer and nodded.

Shane sighed then reluctantly said, "Fine. We'll be heading north towards the Arctic for Suka's talisman."

-Conor-

Conor finally made it back to the town but as soon as he had stepped in, the town was filled with whispers and talks of rumors. Conor caught some words mid-speech.

"...The famous Amayan thief joined the Conqeurors..."

"...General Teng's daughter was here..."

"...Talk about a wolf saving their lives, psshhh..."

Conor flinched at the last part and quickened his pace. He kept on walking until he made it to the Earl's house before sneaking right in, pretending that he had always been there. He quickly made his way to his room and locked the door. His gaze went to where his bed was and his eyes widened as he saw a piece of paper, lying on his bed.

He looked around before picking up the paper before frowning.

Argh, curse me and my lack of reading.

But as he studied the hand-writing, he recognized at once on whose handwriting it was. There were only a few words on the paper and he needed to know what was written on it.

If the message came from him, it must be very urgent if he couldn't tell me himself, Conor thought grimly.

Knowing exactly who he could trust, he folded the paper into his pocket and sneaked out the house once more. He was informed that they were here in town and that if there was an emergency, he was to report to them.

As he started walking through the town once more, he had an uneasy feeling that he already knew what was on the paper. He finally reached the inn and slipped inside, looking around for that one figure. He finally spotted her and casually made his way before sitting down from across her.

She glanced up, surprise filling her eyes before it quickly disappeared, "Conor, right?"

Conor only nodded before handing her the piece of paper. She opened the paper but before she could read, Conor cleared his throat, blushing a bit, "Um, could you remind me again what it says on the paper?"

The girl glanced at him but didn't question as she leaned. Conor leaned in as well that their foreheads were almost touching. They needed to make sure that no one heard of their conversation.

"Zerif has control of the Jade Serpent," the girl read, quietly whispering, "I can't spy anymore. Remember the dream, you need Roll."

Conor stiffened at the mention of the thief. The memory of the dream came back into his mind once more. He remembered seeing a gyrfalcon with bright, amber eyes, a giant panda with wise, grey eyes, and a leopard with rare, violet eyes. He then saw him.

He saw his brother.

"Hey boy," the girl's voice broke into his thoughts, "Hey, are you okay?"

"F-Fine," Conor stammered, clearly not fine.

The girl only nodded in understanding, "Well, you know what this dream is and it's not my position to ask. Do you need help in breaking that thief out?"

It took him a moment to fully register the question, "W-What?"

"It says in the note," the girl repeated, "You need Roll. You need the Amayan thief."

"R-Right," he took a breath to stop his stuttering, "I'll be fine. He's a thief so i'm sure we'll be fine. I don't want to attract more attention with your team."

"Well then, good luck," the girl said, hearing an encouraging note, "Cause you're going to need it."

Conor nodded hastily before getting up. Once he walked out, he quickened his pace and made his way back to the Earl's house. The sun was already going down and he knew that he needed to do this quick.

-Rollan-

Rollan wasn't okay. Rollan was not okay. Rollan was far from being okay. There he was, laying on the bed of his room as that one specific scene replayed in his mind all over again. He shuddered, now starting to regret his decision for joining the Conquerors and find another way to free his mother. Well, it's too late now.

The room had already grown dark and he knew that it had turned night. But he couldn't care any more as he just stayed there, staring up into the ceiling. Nearby, Essix was crouched beside him on a different part of the bed, looking dull and lifeless.

Rollan looked at the bird with guilt and sadness as he whispered, "I'm sorry, Essix."

He softly and gently petted the bird's feathers and Essix seemed to have inched closer, probably seeking for comfort as well.

"There will be another slight change to your quest, Roll. You'll be switching sides."

That's all Zerif told him before he was sent straight for his room. A couple of minutes later, Devin had came and told him that he was to go and join the Greencloaks. Of course Rollan knew that joining the Greencloaks meant spying for the Conquerors. With a new part to the quest, Rollan was having a hard time on how to find the group and most importantly, how to convince them that he tried to escape to join their side.

As Rollan stared into the ceiling once more, there was a knock on the door but Rollan didn't even bother to stand up. The door was unlocked anyways so it soon opened, revealing Devin and the shepherd/servant Rollan met earlier.

"Zerif figured that after the...activity that had taken place, you wouldn't be thinking clearly," Devin spoke, "So he's giving you instructions on how to join the Greencloaks."

"And what is that?" Rollan asked flatly, who couldn't even care more.

"You'll be working with Conor," Devin answered which made Rollan finally looked up, "He'll be assisting you on this quest by pretending to break you out. He figured that the Greencloaks were waiting till its dark for them to move out their hiding spot and plus, he's a good tracker that knows these woods well."

Rollan glanced at the shepherd/servant  named Conor who only avoided his gaze.

"A servant? Breaking me out?" Rollan choked out, "And you think the Greencloaks are going to be fooled? I mean, no offense, Conor but why would they believe that a servant had broken me out when I, the most wanted thief of Amaya clearly told them that I had joined the Conquerors."

"Sorry, did I say break you out?" Devin said flatly, "I meant get you out by force."

"And how would he do that?" Rollan taunted, "I'm an experienced fighter who has escaped many robberies, considering i'm a thief."

Devin and Conor exchanged a glance and something flashed between them, "Believe me, you have much yet to learn."

- - -

"Hey, not too rough," Rollan snapped at Conor.

Conor glanced at him apologetically as he held out the wooden part of the axe he carried, using that part to push him. Rollan had his hands tied behind him in a rope. They were walking through the forest with Rollan not knowing where they were going. Essix flew from tree to tree, sometimes screeching at Conor in anger.

"Sorry," he apologized, "but we need to hurry."

Rollan muttered something under his breath but quickened his pace. Devin had warned them that there were Conquerors patrolling the woods who didn't know of Rollan's planned escape and Zerif didn't seem to be in he mood to warn them. So now, they both have to find the group as quickly as they can without the Conqueror patrols finding them.

"How are we supposed to even find them?" Rollan asked, not for the first time, "It's not like we're going to coincidentally bump into them."

The bushes rustled and both of them froze before Conor shoved Rollan harder. It was hard enough to send Rollan stumbling into the bushes. He felt another push and he was back on his feet as he ran. They kept on running and running. Conor suddenly pulled him to a sharp right as Rollan, once again, crashed into a more thicker bush.

He stumbled forward and as soon as he broke out the bush, he felt himself bump into something. That was until that something moved, making him scramble back. He was only met with a pair of equally startled, brown eyes which soon turned into anger.

Guys, I've been thinking, I've seen many Warrior fan groups/joint accounts and other fan fiction groups/joint accounts. But as far as I know, I haven't seen any Spirit Animal fan groups/joint accounts which is a bit sad...

Updated "Spirit Animals - One Shots" and changed all of my book covers just for the fun of it.
