15: Future Fear

"So...what's going on?" Kabos asked carefully, guestering for Dawn to sit down on the bed next to him.

"Well, I had a fight with Ad. Only, it was like a huge, physical, powers-against-powers, sister-against-sister fight."

"Sounds intense." Kabos said, taking Dawn's hand in his. Dawn felt sparks of electricity shooting up her arm and had to remind herself to stay focused.

"Yeah, it was." she replied. "I kind of lost control and knocked her out. After, of course, she destroyed the necklace you gave me. That's why I'm not wearing it. I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry." Kabos soothed her, "I know how jealous siblings can sometimes get in the way of relationships. It's okay."

"Yeah...wait, how did you know she was jealous?"

Crap, I did it again. Kabos thought to himself. He quickly thought of another excuse.

"I just assumed. Why else would she fight with you and destroy a present from me?"

Dawn nodded, content with his answer. "I know. I was so angry after she blasted it, I lost control. So now, Ad's unconcious in the hospital wing. But she told me something about you before we started fighting."

        "Really? What was it?"

"She said that you were going to betray me when I needed you most. She said---"

"Oh my gosh...Dawn, listen to me." Kabos looked her right in the eye, and Dawn suddenly felt herself being whisked away to another world, one soley found in Kabos's eyes, in the beauty and comfort she found there. "I would never, ever, do anything to hurt you. I would never do anything to make you upset, to make you doubt me. I swear---"

"I know." Dawn whispered. "That's why we fought. Because I refused to believe her, I refused to let her drag me down. I trust you."

"Good." Kabos replied, smiling slightly. "Because I love you, Dawn. I...I love you."

Dawn felt her breath catch and her heart lept up to her throat. He had said it. He had said the words.

        I love you.

"I love you too." Dawn whispered, and leaned in to kiss him, unable to believe that Adriana could see anything bad in this boy.

***

It was dark outside. It was pitch black. She couldn't see anything. But she could hear...she could hear wind, and screams, and the sound of crying. It all sounded so awful, so pitiable.

        And then the fire started.

The flames leaped out at her, making her heart stand still and her legs freeze in terror. They were taller than a house, taller than the castle itself. They threatened to engulf her, threatened to burn her alive.

        The screams grew louder.

The wind howled in her ears as the flames grew closer, but her legs refused to move. She tried to use her powers, tried to get them to go away, but nothing worked. She was stuck, rooted in the ground, as the fire came closer, the screams grew louder, and her own death seemed nearer than ever.

        And then there was nothing.

She was falling, fast, falling down into a black hole, but she couldn't sense anything else. Only the sensation of falling faster than should have been humanly possible, falling for what felt like hours, until she landed on something soft and light, like a feathered pillow.

        But she still couldn't see.

The silence surrounding her was deafening, pushing at her from all sides and pounding against her eardrums. She couldn't figure out which she preferred, the silence or the screams.

"That is what is to come."

She spun around as a voice broke the silence, set her ears to rest. The voice belonged to the outline of a tall, slim woman who was walking towards her, her heels clicking against the floor and her eyes glowing red through the blackness.

Then the dark began to lift until it gave way to a dusk, where she could see the woman's features; her red eyes, her jet-black hair pulled tightly back into a bun, her long nose and thin lips set in a firm line. Her skin was pale as the moon and her face had a sallow, ghastly appearance.

        "Adriana."

Adriana was startled to hear her own name uttered, and realized that when the woman spoke, her lips didn't move.

"This is what is to come." the woman's voice echoed around her again. "This is what will happen if she is not stopped."

"Who?" Adriana found her voice, but it came out hoarse and scratchy, "If who is not stopped?"

        "Your sister."

"My sister isn't the dangerous one." Adriana defended Dawn automatically, "Kabos is."

        "Ah. Kabos. The swindler."

        "The what?"

The woman laughed, an awful, forced sound that echoed around the room while her face remained expressionless.

"The name Kabos is derived out of the Hebrew word for "swindler", or someone who is a fraud."

        "What's Hebrew?"

"Nevermind that. It's from long ago, so long ago that it's no wonder that the meaning has been forgotten." the woman took another step towards Adriana. "I am here to warn you. You saw the fire, heard the screams, the wind, the dark. That's what the world will become if Kabos is left to continue fooling Dawn. He has her under his spell, he has her under a spell that no one can hope of breaking. But you must. You must do the impossible, you must tear Dawn away from him. Or this? This is your future."

The woman turned and started to walk away, her heels clicking against the floor again.

"Wait!" Adriana called, her mind coursing with confusion, "What do I do?"

"That, my dear, is up to you."

Adriana couldn't think of any possible way to make Dawn leave Kabos.

"Wait!" she called again, "What if I need you again? Who are you?"

The woman turned around this time, and Adriana recognized a flash in the red eyes, the eyes that had used to be green.

        "Don't you see? I'm you."

***

Adriana awoke with a gasp in the hospital wing, her skin covered in a cold sweat and her hands shaking with fear.

Jasmine ran over to her, smiling broadly.

"You're alive! You're awake! Oh, I must  go tell Rissa!" she rushed away, only to be stopped at the door by Rissa herself entering the room.

"Hello, Adriana. I thought you would wake up." she sat down at Adriana's beside, her mouth curved in a thin and insincere smile. "What were---"

"Dawn." Adriana barked, her voice coming out louder than she had intended. "Where's Dawn?"

"I believe she went out to see her boyfriend, Kabos. Oh, that boy is quite a catch." Rissa smiled.

"No." Adriana said, standing up. "I have to get her."

"What?" Rissa looked bewildered. "Why? You must rest, you've been through quite a lot---"

"No." Adriana pushed away her hand, "I need to get Dawn."

        "But---"

"Listen." Adriana snapped, turning to face her aunt. "I need to find Dawn. I can't explain it right now, but she's in danger. This isn't some silly revenge matter, Rissa. This is a matter of life and death."
