14: Without Conscience
"No...no...this can't be happening..." Kabos watched in a mixture of fear and shock as his master paced around the room, his left eye twitching periodicly, "This is impossible..."
He turned to Kabos, his eyes filling with rage.
"How did she break it?" he whispered venemously, "Did you do something to it? Did you tamper with it in any way? How. Did. She. Break. It."
Kabos shook his head quickly.
"I didn't do anything to it. When you gave it to me in the box, I didn't touch it afterwards. I swear."
The man growled quietly. "Then we must have underestimated the other one's power...majorly underestimated it. There's no way she should have been able to break that necklace. The number of enchantments I put on it is endless...no. She is far more powerful than I thought. But, no matter." he dusted his hands off on his jacket briskly, "We have no way of seeing the princess now. We need another plan. And this time, you're going to have to act."

"Help! Help!" Dawn screamed, over and over, her mind whirling and her hands numb.
Frantic knocking sounded at the door as someone tried to open it. Cursing herself, Dawn remembered that Adriana had put a charm on it.
But that had been at night. It was day now.
"Stand away from the door!" Dawn shouted, standing up shakily. She aimed her hands at the door and brought them down swiftly, watching gratefully as the door shattered and revealed Rissa behind it.
"What happened?!" the sorceress exclaimed as she rushed into the room, taking in the broken window, shattered mirrors, broken furniture, and, finally, Adriana's motionless body.
"It's a long story." Dawn whimpered. "But the fact of the matter is, I lost my temper and I don't know what I did to Adriana. I blasted something at her, it lifted her off the ground, and she fell motionless to the floor." Dawn did her best to control her emotions in front of her aunt, but a sob escaped her lips as she uttered the last words.
"Dawn, it's okay." Rissa promised, picking Adriana up in her arms as easily as if she were a rag doll, "She'll be fine. But after I take her to Jasmine, I want to discuss with you what exactly made you so angry at your sister that you felt the need to use your power against her." she rushed out of the room.
Dawn sat down on her bed and surveyed the remains of her bedroom, which had been one of the most beautiful rooms in the castle just hours ago. Now it was completely destroyed, shards of glass and jagged pieces of wood everywhere.
Dawn picked up the necklace off the floor from where Adriana had blasted it. There was still one piece of sapphire that could pass for a whole piece, with no sharp edges or jagged pieces cut out of it.
She placed the gem on the top of her dresser, one of the few pieces of furniture in the room that had escaped the fight unscathed. As Dawn looked at it and remembered who had given it to her, just a few hours before, she felt the anger bubble up inside of her again. But she tamed it, calmed herself back down.
Hurting Adriana had not been the right way to prove her sister wrong. Dawn still knew that Adriana had been jealous of her. She always had been. No one could deny that. She still agreed with everything she had said earlier to her sister in the depth of her rage, when her mouth had lost its filter and she had let everything come pouring out. It had felt good, really, to say those things to Ad. Lately she had been acting like she was the high-and-mighty princess who got to do whatever she wanted. Ha. That wasn't her territory. It was Dawn's.
And she couldn't have Adriana stealing that away from her.
Sure, she didn't really wish death upon her sister. Not even bodily injury. What she did wish was a bit of a reality check. Proof that Dawn was still the leading lady in this royal show.
Dawn stood up. When Adriana woke up, she would see that Dawn was still the perfect princess. After all, she was the one with a boyfriend.
It was amazing how quickly Dawn had forgotten that Adriana might not wake up.

"Jasmine? Jasmine!" Rissa called, rushing into the hospital wing of the castle. Jasmine was tending to some maid that had been outside too long and had a blistering sunburn, but Rissa figured that her ordeal was a little more important.
"Yes, ma'am?" Jasmine asked, looking up from her patient. When she saw Adriana's unconscience body, she dropped the bottle of liquid she was holding on the maid's back, generating a loud "Ouch!" from the girl. Muttering apologies, Jasmine rushed over to Rissa.
"What happened?" she cried, taking Adriana in her arms and laying her down on one of the cots.
"I'm not sure. I was walking down the hallway when I heard Dawn screaming for help. The two girls were in Dawn's bedroom, but when I tried the door it was locked. Dawn screamed for me to stand back and then blasted the door open. I walked into her bedroom, which was in complete disarray, wood and glass everywhere, and found Dawn leaning over Adriana's body. She said she had gotten angry with her, used her power to lift her up in the air, and then dropped her. She hasn't moved since."
"Good gosh." Jasmine replied, rushing around trying to find the right thing to treat Adriana with. "Anything else?"
"I'm about to go talk to Dawn to find out exactly what made her so angry with her sister. I'll let you know what I find. In the meantime, try to help the poor girl. Untrained powers aren't something to mess with." Rissa walked out of the room and down the hallway to find Dawn.
But when she got to her niece's room and stepped over the ruined door, Rissa found that Dawn was nowhere to be seen.
Of course she would disappear. Anything to avoid talking to me, Rissa thought angrily. Doesn't she realize that her sister could be on her deathbed?
***
I mean, I know Ad could be on her deathbed right now, but I have to check in with Kabos. Dawn thought to herself as she closed the castle doors behind her. The air was finally warm and the wind had stopped beating at the windows. Dawn ran down the front steps of the castle, through the gate, and off to Kabos's house.
Phillip answered the door.
"Hello, Dawn. Kabos is right in the kitchen, if you'd like to come inside."
"I would love to." Dawn replied, smiling sweetly. She stepped into the small home and found Kabos chopping vegetables at the counter.
"Hey!" Kabos said, his face breaking into a huge grin upon seeing Dawn, "To what do I owe this lovely surprise?" he frowned upon noticing her bare neck. "Did you not like the necklace? I swear, I thought you had said that you loved sapphires. I can get you a new one if you didn't like it---"
"No, no, no, it's not that." Dawn smiled pleasently, but it felt forced. "Is there a place we can talk? In private?" she felt awkward with Phillip eyeing them from the doorway.
"Oh, sure!" Kabos replied, putting down the knife and wiping his hands on a dishcloth, "We can head up to my room if you'd like." he led the way upstairs, Dawn following close behind. "How's Adriana holding up?"
Dawn stopped in her tracks.
"What?"
Kabos turned around to face her.
"I heard from someone that you two had a disagreement. Word travels fast around this part of the village." he laughed, but it sounded strained. Dawn nodded, still slightly suspicious.
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about." she said slowly. "Oh, is this your room?" she walked right into the small bedroom to their left, and Kabos followed her in, silently berating himself for almost causing his demise.

A/N: Just a filler chapter after all the action and drama in the last couple. I hope you've been enjoying, and I still can't begin to thank you guys for the comments and votes you've been giving to the story! I hit 1k reads!! I have the ending planned out and might have a sequel in mind...but that's quite a ways off. My first day of school is tomorrow so uploads might be more spaced out! Comment below the one thing you want to see in the story before it ends. (there's probably a good 10-15 chapters left, but just so I know what you guys are interested in seeing!)
Remember to vote and comment!
